    A monolithic collapse origin for the thin/thick disc structure of ESO 243-49

    ESO 243-49 is a high-mass (circular velocity vc≈200 km s−1v_{\rm c}\approx200\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}) edge-on S0 galaxy in the Abell 2877 cluster at a distance of ∼95 Mpc\sim95\,{\rm Mpc}. To elucidate the origin of its thick disc, we use MUSE science verification data to study its kinematics and stellar populations. The thick disc emits ∼80%\sim80\% of the light at heights in excess of 3.5′′3.5^{\prime\prime} (1.6 kpc1.6\,{\rm kpc}). The rotation velocities of its stars lag by 30−40 km s−130-40\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}} compared to those in the thin disc, which is compatible with the asymmetric drift. The thick disc is found to be more metal-poor than the thin disc, but both discs have old ages. We suggest an internal origin for the thick disc stars in high-mass galaxies. We propose that the thick disc formed either a){\rm a)} first in a turbulent phase with a high star formation rate and that a thin disc formed shortly afterwards, or b){\rm b)} because of the dynamical heating of a thin pre-existing component. Either way, the star formation in ESO 243-49 was quenched just a few Gyrs after the galaxy was born and the formation of a thin and a thick disc must have occurred before the galaxy stopped forming stars. The formation of the discs was so fast that it could be described as a monolithic collapse where several generations of stars formed in a rapid succession.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A.     Catalogue of the morphological features in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4^4G)

    A catalogue of the morphological features for the complete Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4^4G), including 2352 nearby galaxies, is presented. The measurements are made using 3.6 μ\mum images, largely tracing the old stellar population; at this wavelength the effects of dust are also minimal. The measured features are the sizes, ellipticities, and orientations of bars, rings, ringlenses, and lenses. Measured in a similar manner are also barlenses (lens-like structures embedded in the bars), which are not lenses in the usual sense, being rather the more face-on counterparts of the boxy/peanut structures in the edge-on view. In addition, pitch angles of spiral arm segments are measured for those galaxies where they can be reliably traced. More than one pitch angle may appear for a single galaxy. All measurements are made in a human-supervised manner so that attention is paid to each galaxy. We used isophotal analysis, unsharp masking, and fitting ellipses to measured structures. We find that the sizes of the inner rings and lenses normalized to barlength correlate with the galaxy mass: the normalized sizes increase toward the less massive galaxies; it has been suggested that this is related to the larger dark matter content in the bar region in these systems. Bars in the low mass galaxies are also less concentrated, likely to be connected to the mass cut-off in the appearance of the nuclear rings and lenses. We also show observational evidence that barlenses indeed form part of the bar, and that a large fraction of the inner lenses in the non-barred galaxies could be former barlenses in which the thin outer bar component has dissolved.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    A Regularized Jacobi Method for Large-Scale Linear Programming

    A parallel algorithm based on Jacobi iterations is proposed to minimize the augmented Lagrangian functions of the multiplier method for large-scale linear programming. Sparsity is efficiently exploited for determining stepsizes (column-wise) for the Jacobi iterations. Linear convergence is shown with convergence ratio depending on sparsity but not on the penalty parameter and on problem size. Employing simulation of parallel computations, an experimental code is tested extensively on 68 Netlib problems. Results are compared with the simplex method, an interior point algorithm and a Gauss-Seidel approach. We observe that speedup against the simplex method generally increases with the problem size, while the parallel solution times increase slowly, if at all. Our preliminary results compared with the other two methods are highly encouraging as well

    Depressive symptoms are associated with analgesic use in people with Alzheimer's disease: Kuopio ALSOVA study.

    Neuropsychiatric symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) such as depression may be associated with pain, which according to the literature may be inadequately recognized and managed in this population. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with analgesic use in persons with AD; in particular, how AD severity, functional status, neuropsychiatric symptoms of AD, co-morbidities and somatic symptoms are associated with analgesic use. 236 community-dwelling persons with very mild or mild AD at baseline, and their caregivers, were interviewed over five years as part of the prospective ALSOVA study. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEEs) were used to estimate unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for the factors associated with analgesic use over a five year follow-up. The proportion of persons with AD using any analgesic was low (13.6%) at baseline and remained relatively constant during the follow-up (15.3% at Year 5). Over time, the most prevalent analgesic changed from non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (8.1% of persons with AD at Year 1) to acetaminophen (11.1% at Year 5). Depressive symptoms (measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, BDI) were independently associated with analgesic use, after effects of age, gender, education, AD severity, comorbidities and somatic symptoms were taken into account. For every one unit increase in BDI, the odds of analgesic use increased by 4% (OR = 1.04, 95% confidence interval CI = 1.02-1.07). Caregiver depressive symptoms were not statistically significantly associated with analgesic use of the person with AD. Depressive symptoms were significantly associated with analgesic use during the five year follow-up period. Possible explanations warranting investigation are that persons with AD may express depressive symptoms as painful somatic complaints, or untreated pain may cause depressive symptoms. Greater awareness of the association between depressive symptoms and analgesic use may lead to safer and more effective prescribing for these conditions

    We predict that an ultra-cold Bose gas in an optical lattice can give rise to a new form of condensation, namely matter X waves. These are non-spreading 3D wave-packets which reflect the symmetry of the Laplacian with a negative effective mass along the lattice direction, and are allowed to exist in the absence of any trapping potential even in the limit of non-interacting atoms.     Energetics and many-particle mechanisms of two-dimensional cluster diffusion on Cu(100) surfaces

    We study the energetics and stability of small Cu clusters on Cu(100) surfaces using molecular statics combined with systematic saddle-point search methods. We find several previously overlooked concerted many-particle processes that play an important role in cluster energetics. In particular, for smaller clusters there is an internal atom row shear mechanism that in some cases determines the rate-limiting step for center-of-mass motion. Our results suggest specific reaction paths for experimentally observed cluster diffusion events.Peer reviewe

    Spatial Structure and Coherent Motion in Dense Planetary Rings Induced by Self-Gravitational Instability

    We investigate the formation of spatial structure in dense, self-gravitating particle systems such as Saturn's B-ring through local NN-body simulations to clarify the intrinsic physics based on individual particle motion. In such a system, Salo (1995) showed that the formation of spatial structure such as wake-like structure and particle grouping (clump) arises spontaneously due to gravitational instability and the radial velocity dispersion increases as the formation of the wake structure. However, intrinsic physics of the phenomena has not been clarified. We performed local NN-body simulations including mutual gravitational forces between ring particles as well as direct (inelastic) collisions with identical (up to N∼40000N\sim40000) particles. In the wake structure particles no longer move randomly but coherently. We found that particle motion was similar to Keplerian motion even in the wake structure and that the coherent motion was produced since the particles in a clump had similar eccentricity and longitude of perihelion. This coherent motion causes the increase and oscillation in the radial velocity dispersion. The mean velocity dispersion is rather larger in a more dissipative case with a smaller restitution coefficient and/or a larger surface density since the coherence is stronger in the more dissipative case. Our simulations showed that the wavelength of the wake structure was approximately given by the longest wavelength \hs{\lambda}{cr} = 4\pi^2 G\Sigma/\kappa^2 in the linear theory of axisymmetric gravitational instability in a thin disk, where GG, Σ\Sigma, and κ\kappa are the gravitational constant, surface density, and a epicyclic frequency.Comment: Accepted by Earth, Planets, and Space. 39 pages, 20 figures. The aim of this paper is to describe the current status of the formulation of the global trade model to be employed for trade analysis. The data definition and availability have been discussed to a considerable extent as well. The work draws heavily on several earlier papers of the project as well as on comments by a number of collaborators on these papers

    Chains of Viscoelastic Spheres

    Given a chain of viscoelastic spheres with fixed masses of the first and last particles. We raise the question: How to chose the masses of the other particles of the chain to assure maximal energy transfer? The results are compared with a chain of particles for which a constant coefficient of restitution is assumed. Our simple example shows that the assumption of viscoelastic particle properties has not only important consequences for very large systems (see [1]) but leads also to qualitative changes in small systems as compared with particles interacting via a constant restitution coefficient.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
