The Spanish American Homeland: Four Centuries in New Mexico\u27s Rio Arriba by Alvar W. Carlson (review)

    Get PDF
This comprehensive examination of Spanish, Mexican, and United States land tenure systems in New Mexico\u27s Rio Arriba is based on the discipline of geography Alvar Carlson undertakes his journey into land grant history in order to ex- amine cultural and environmental changes visible in the region after some 400 years of history. He finds that land grant history is certainly in need of revision as he focuses upon the incorporation of subsistence agriculture and land use pat- terns in Rio Arriba

Chicano Education in the Era of Segregation by Gilbert G. Gonzalez (review)

This study is a Marxist critique of public education in the the era of de jure segregation. The major focus is on educational adapted to the special needs of a linguistically and culturally community--policy that resulted in intelligence testing, tracking, differentiation, vocational education, and segregated schools. political economy, the public school processed the Mexican student of quality control. Gilbert Gonzales focuses on the theoretical methods of this control and holds it up for rigid analysis

Memorias: A West Texas Life by Salvador Guerrero and Arnoldo de León (review)

Arnoldo de Leon, a Tejano historian, has added to the historiography of Chicano history in Texas through the publication of The Tejano Community, 1836-1900 (University of New Mexico Press, 1982) and They Called Them Greasers (University of Texas Press, 1983). While de Leon feels that this autobiography helps document the voice of the so-called Mexican American Generation, it is merely the lightly edited memories of Salvador Guerrero, World War II veteran, civil servant, and West Texas community activist. De Leon, however, finds this slim volume an indispensable contribution makes it clear that his editorial services were primarily style, not substance

Optimal mini-batch and step sizes for SAGA

Recently it has been shown that the step sizes of a family of variance reduced gradient methods called the JacSketch methods depend on the expected smoothness constant. In particular, if this expected smoothness constant could be calculated a priori, then one could safely set much larger step sizes which would result in a much faster convergence rate. We fill in this gap, and provide simple closed form expressions for the expected smoothness constant and careful numerical experiments verifying these bounds. Using these bounds, and since the SAGA algorithm is part of this JacSketch family, we suggest a new standard practice for setting the step sizes and mini-batch size for SAGA that are competitive with a numerical grid search. Furthermore, we can now show that the total complexity of the SAGA algorithm decreases linearly in the mini-batch size up to a pre-defined value: the optimal mini-batch size. This is a rare result in the stochastic variance reduced literature, only previously shown for the Katyusha algorithm. Finally we conjecture that this is the case for many other stochastic variance reduced methods and that our bounds and analysis of the expected smoothness constant is key to extending these results.Comment: 34 pages, 27 figure
