    Conscious Consumers: Understanding the Roles and Impacts Patrons Can Have to Make Ethically Minded Purchases That Affect Society

    This thesis will examine the issue that patrons of large corporations are often unaware of how their patronage funds divisive corporate philanthropy resulting in an ethical dilemma for the patron. To better understand this issue, research was conducted through a series of research questions. After completing this research, a literature review was conducted in addition to case studies and visual analyses. Based upon the research, a visual solution was created to serve as a resource and tool to educate consumers about the philanthropic efforts of large corporations as it relates to their values and missions. The thesis visual deliverables include an interactive prototype, logo for the app, full branding guide, various consumer and marketplace-based icons, as well as posters to be used within the community to raise awareness and advertise for the final app solution. Through these outlets, consumers will have a greater understanding of how their patronage pays support to economic, social, and political issues

    The effect of print speed and material aging on the mechanical properties of a self-healing nanocomposite hydrogel

    A UV-curable nanoclay-zwitterionic hydrogel is synthesised and evaluated though rheological and mechanical testing. The result shows that aging time of the pre-gel have a big impact on storage and loss of modulus which both increases with increasing aging time, particularly in the first 48 h. The pre-gel is successfully printed and is shown to be able to support itself making it possible to fully print structures before curing. Compression and tensile samples are printed and compared to cast samples. The pre-gel aging time showed that an increased time resulted in a lower strain at failure for both casted and extruded samples. However, when printing with a speed of 10 mm/s with UV-curing during printing, a significant increase in strain at failure is achieved. Furthermore, the compressed samples display self-healing abilities at room temperature and almost completely returns to its original state before compression occurred

    Analysis of Subjective Qualitative Judgement of Passenger Vehicle High Speed Drivability due to Aerodynamics

    The flow created by the shape of a vehicle and by environmental conditions, such as cross-winds, will influence the dynamics of a vehicle. The objective of this paper is to correlate the driver\u27s subjective judgement of drivability with quantities which are measurable during a vehicle test. For this purpose, a sedan vehicle, fitted with different aerodynamic external devices that create disturbances in the flow field, were assessed on a test track. These configurations intend to result in substandard straight line drivability. The aerodynamic devices investigated are an inverted wing, an inverted wing with an asymmetric flat plate and an asymmetric air curtain attached under the bumper. The devices generate more lift and asymmetric forces resulting in increased vehicle sensitivity to external disturbances. Pairs of configurations with and without bumper side-kicks are also tested. The side-kicks create a defined flow separation which helps to stabilize the flow and increase drivability. Plots of mean and standard deviation and ride diagram of lateral acceleration, yaw velocity, steering angle and steering torque are used to understand vehicle behaviour for the different configurations. Ride diagrams are used to visualize vehicle excitations with transient events separated from the stationary signal. The range of the measured quantities for understanding the drivability is not predicted in advance and it turns out that the error margins of the measurements are smaller than the measurement uncertainty of the Inertia Measurement Unit. Although the outcome lacks the ability to objectively quantify subjective judgements, it provides a useful qualitative assessment of the problem as the trends agree well with the subjective judgement of the driver

    Case report and summary of literature: giant perineal keloids treated with post-excisional radiotherapy

    BACKGROUND: Keloids are common benign tumors of the dermis, typically arising after insult to the skin. While typically only impinging on cosmesis, large or recurrent keloids may require therapeutic intervention. While no single standardized treatment course has been established, several series report excellent outcomes for keloids with post-surgery radiation therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a patient with a history of recurrent keloids arising in the absence of an ascribed trauma and a maternal familial history of keloid formation, whose physical examination several large perineal keloids of 6-20 cm in the largest dimension. The patient was treated with surgical extirpation and adjuvant radiation therapy. Radiotherapy was delivered to the scar bed to a total dose of 22 Gy over 11 daily fractions. Acute radiotherapy toxicity necessitated a treatment break due to RTOG Grade III acute toxicity (moderate ulceration and skin breakdown) which resolved rapidly during a 3-day treatment break. The patient demonstrated local control and has remained free of local recurrence for more than 2 years. CONCLUSION: Radiotherapy for keloids represents a safe and effective option for post-surgical keloid therapy, especially for patients with bulky or recurrent disease

    The Early Stage of Bacterial Genome-Reductive Evolution in the Host

    The equine-associated obligate pathogen Burkholderia mallei was developed by reductive evolution involving a substantial portion of the genome from Burkholderia pseudomallei, a free-living opportunistic pathogen. With its short history of divergence (∼3.5 myr), B. mallei provides an excellent resource to study the early steps in bacterial genome reductive evolution in the host. By examining 20 genomes of B. mallei and B. pseudomallei, we found that stepwise massive expansion of IS (insertion sequence) elements ISBma1, ISBma2, and IS407A occurred during the evolution of B. mallei. Each element proliferated through the sites where its target selection preference was met. Then, ISBma1 and ISBma2 contributed to the further spread of IS407A by providing secondary insertion sites. This spread increased genomic deletions and rearrangements, which were predominantly mediated by IS407A. There were also nucleotide-level disruptions in a large number of genes. However, no significant signs of erosion were yet noted in these genes. Intriguingly, all these genomic modifications did not seriously alter the gene expression patterns inherited from B. pseudomallei. This efficient and elaborate genomic transition was enabled largely through the formation of the highly flexible IS-blended genome and the guidance by selective forces in the host. The detailed IS intervention, unveiled for the first time in this study, may represent the key component of a general mechanism for early bacterial evolution in the host

    Comparison of the ‘Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus’ Genome Adapted for an Intracellular Lifestyle with Other Members of the Rhizobiales

    An intracellular plant pathogen ‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus,’ a member of the Rhizobiales, is related to Sinorhizobium meliloti, Bradyrhizobium japonicum, nitrogen fixing endosymbionts, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a plant pathogen, and Bartonella henselae, an intracellular mammalian pathogen. Whole chromosome comparisons identified at least 50 clusters of conserved orthologous genes found on the chromosomes of all five metabolically diverse species. The intracellular pathogens ‘Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus’ and Bartonella henselae have genomes drastically reduced in gene content and size as well as a relatively low content of guanine and cytosine. Codon and amino acid preferences that emphasize low guanosine and cytosine usage are globally employed in these genomes, including within regions of microsynteny and within signature sequences of orthologous proteins. The length of orthologous proteins is generally conserved, but not their isoelectric points, consistent with extensive amino acid substitutions to accommodate selection for low GC content. The ‘Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus’ genome apparently has all of the genes required for DNA replication present in Sinorhizobium meliloti except it has only two, rather than three RNaseH genes. The gene set required for DNA repair has only one rather than ten DNA ligases found in Sinorhizobium meliloti, and the DNA PolI of ‘Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus’ lacks domains needed for excision repair. Thus the ability of ‘Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus’ to repair mutations in its genome may be impaired. Both ‘Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus and Bartonella henselae lack enzymes needed for the metabolism of purines and pyrimidines, which must therefore be obtained from the host. The ‘Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus’ genome also has a greatly reduced set of sigma factors used to control transcription, and lacks sigma factors 24, 28 and 38. The ‘Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus’ genome has all of the hallmarks of a reduced genome of a pathogen adapted to an intracellular lifestyle
