    B_c meson production in \gamma\gamma collisions and charm content of the photon

    Based on photon structure function formalism we have calculated Bc(Bc∗)B_c(B_c^{*}) meson production cross section in γγ\gamma\gamma collisions via partonic subprocess cγ→Bc(Bc∗)bc\gamma\to B_c(B_c^{*}) b. It was shown that this approach gives the same results for Bc∗(Bc)B_c^*(B_c) meson cross sections as the direct leading order QCD calculation of the subprocess γγ→Bc(Bc∗)bcˉ\gamma\gamma\to B_c(B_c^{*})b\bar c at small energy. Howere, opposite to the direct QCD calculation we have obtained the increase of the Bc(Bc∗)B_c(B_c^{*}) meson cross section at large energies. We have found also additional contribution to the BcB_c meson production via the nonperturbative fluctuations γ↔J/ψ\gamma\leftrightarrow J/\psi.Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages and 6 figures available upon reques

    Feasibility of a Small, Rapid Optical-to-IR Response, Next Generation Gamma Ray Burst Mission

    We present motivations for and study feasibility of a small, rapid optical to IR response gamma ray burst (GRB) space observatory. By analyzing existing GRB data, we give realistic detection rates for X-ray and optical/IR instruments of modest size under actual flight conditions. Given new capabilities of fast optical/IR response (about 1 s to target) and simultaneous multi-band imaging, such an observatory can have a reasonable event rate, likely leading to new science. Requiring a Swift-like orbit, duty cycle, and observing constraints, a Swift-BAT scaled down to 190 square cm of detector area would still detect and locate about 27 GRB per yr. for a trigger threshold of 6.5 sigma. About 23 percent of X-ray located GRB would be detected optically for a 10 cm diameter instrument (about 6 per yr. for the 6.5 sigma X-ray trigger).Comment: Elaborated text version of a poster presented at 2012 Malaga/Marbella symposiu

    Associated Production of Bottomonia and Higgs Bosons at Hadron Colliders

    We study the associated production of bottomonia and Higgs bosons at hadron colliders within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics providing all contributing partonic cross sections in analytic form. While such processes tend to be suppressed in the standard model, they may have interesting cross sections in its minimal supersymmetric extension, especially at large values of tan(beta), where the bottom Yukawa couplings are enhanced. We present numerical results for the processes involving the lighter CP-even h^0 boson and the CP-odd A^0 boson appropriate for the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN LHC.Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, Latex, to appear in Phys.     Color-Octet Contributions to J/ψJ/\psi Photoproduction

    We have calculated the leading color-octet contributions to the production of J/ψJ/\psi particles in photon-proton collisions. Using the values for the color-octet matrix elements extracted from fits to prompt J/ψJ/\psi data at the Tevatron, we demonstrate that distinctive color-octet signatures should be visible in J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction. However, these predictions appear at variance with recent experimental data obtained at HERA, indicating that the phenomenological importance of the color-octet contributions is smaller than expected from theoretical considerations and suggested by the Tevatron fits.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, epsfig, 4 figure

    We review the present level of knowledge of the hadronic structure of the photon, as revealed in interactions involving quarks and gluons ``in" the photon. The concept of photon structure functions is introduced in the description of deep--inelastic eÎłe \gamma scattering, and existing parametrizations of the parton densities in the photon are reviewed. We then turn to hard \gamp\ and \gaga\ collisions, where we treat the production of jets, heavy quarks, hard (direct) photons, \jpsi\ mesons, and lepton pairs. We also comment on issues that go beyond perturbation theory, including recent attempts at a comprehensive description of both hard and soft \gamp\ and \gaga\ interactions.     Charmonium Production via Fragmentation at DESY HERA

    The cross section for the photoproduction of large-p_T J/psi mesons at HERA is calculated at next-to-leading order, adopting a perturbative approach to describe the fragmentation of charm quarks and gluons into J/psi mesons. We treat the charm quark according to the massless factorization scheme, where it is assumed to be one of the active flavours inside the proton and the resolved photon. We present inclusive distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity, including the contributions due to direct and resolved photons. The importance of the colour-octet components of the J/psi wave function, which contribute to the fragmentation process, is emphasized.     We consider a general scheme for calculating the leptonic constant of heavy quarkonium QQ-bar in the framework of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, NRQCD, operating as the effective theory of nonrelativistic heavy quarks. We explore the approach of static potential in QCD, which takes into account both the evolution of effective charge in the three-loop approximation and the linearly raising potential term, which provides the quark confinement.     On the mechanisms of heavy-quarkonium hadroproduction
