When tanß meets all the mixing angles

Models with two-Higgs-doublets and natural flavour conservation contain tan⁡β=v2/v1\tan \beta = v_2 / v_1 as a physical parameter. We offer here a generalization of a recently proposed idea where only the Cabibbo angle, θc≃0.22\theta_\text{c} \simeq 0.22, was related to tan⁡β\tan \beta by virtue of the D4\mathbb{D}_{4} dihedral symmetry group. The original proposal consisted of a massless first generation of quarks and no mixing with the third generation. In our case, through the addition of a third Higgs doublet with a small vacuum-expectation-value but very large masses, thus later decoupling, all quarks become massive and quark mixing is fully reproduced. In fact, all quark mixing angles are expressed in terms of tan⁡β\tan \beta and one recovers trivial mixing in the limit β→0\beta \rightarrow 0. We also explore the consequences in lepton mixing by adopting a type I seesaw mechanism with three heavy right-handed neutrinos

Ultra-ductile and low friction epoxy matrix composites

We present the results of an effective reinforcement of epoxy resin matrix with fullerene carbon soot. The optimal carbon soot addition of 1 wt. % results in a toughness improvement of almost 20 times. The optimized soot-epoxy composites also show an increase in tensile elongation of more than 13 %, thus indicating a change of the failure mechanism in tension from brittle to ductile. Additionally, the coefficient of friction is reduced from its 0.91 value in plain epoxy resin to 0.15 in the optimized composite. In the optimized composite, the lateral forces during nanoscratching decrease as much as 80 % with enhancement of the elastic modulus and hardness by 43 % and 94%, respectively. The optimized epoxy resin fullerene soot composite can be a strong candidate for coating applications where toughness, low friction, ductility and light weight are important.Comment: 24 pages, 7 Figures, 1 Table in Polymer Testing (2015

On the entropy of a stealth vector-tensor black hole

We apply Wald's formalism to a Lagrangian within generalised Proca gravity that admits a Schwarzschild black hole with a non-trivial vector field. The resulting entropy differs from that of the same black hole in General Relativity by a logarithmic correction modulated by the only independent charge of the vector field. We find conditions on this charge to guarantee that the entropy is a non-decreasing function of the black hole area, as is the case in GR. If this requirement is extended to black hole mergers, we find that for Planck scale black holes, a non-decreasing entropy is possible only if the area of the final black hole is several times larger than the initial total area of the merger. Finally, we discuss some implications of the vector Galileon entropy from the point of view of entropic gravity
