Interplay of Chemical Bonding and Magnetism in Fe_4N, Fe_3N, Fe_2N
Using spin density functional theory we have carried out a comparative study
of chemical bonding and magnetism in Fe_4N, Fe_3N and Fe_2N. All of these
compounds form close packed Fe lattices, while N occupies octahedral
interstitial positions. High spin fcc Fe and hypothetical FeN with rock salt
structure have been included in our study as reference systems. We find strong,
covalent Fe-N bonds as a result of a substantial \sigma-type p-d hybridisation,
with some charge transfer to N. Those Fe d orbitals which contribute to the p-d
bonds, do no longer participate in the exchange splitting of the Fe d bands.
Because of the large exchange fields, the majority spin d bands are always
fully occupied, while the minority spin d bands are close to half-filling, thus
optimizing the Fe d-d covalent bonding. As a consequence, in good approximation
the individual Fe moments decrease in steps of 0.5 \mu_B from fcc iron (2.7
\mu_B) via Fe_4N (2.7 and 1.97 mu_B}), \chem{Fe_3N} (1.99 \mu_B) to \zeta -
Fe_2N (1.43 \mu_B).Comment: 16 pages, 15 figure
Whole body counter surveys of Miharu-town school children for four consecutive years after the Fukushima NPP accident
Comprehensive whole-body counter surveys of Miharu town school children have
been conducted for four consecutive years, in 2011-2014. This represents the
only long-term sampling-bias-free study of its type conducted after the
Fukushima Dai-ichi accident. For the first time in 2014, a new device called
the Babyscan, which has a low Cs MDA of Bq/body, was used to
screen the children shorter than 130 cm. No child in this group was found to
have detectable level of radiocesium. Using the MDAs, upper limits of daily
intake of radiocesium were estimated for each child. For those screened with
the Babyscan, the upper intake limits were found to be <1 Bq/day for
Cs. Analysis of a questionnaire filled out by the children's parents
regarding their food and water consumption shows that the majority of Miharu
children regularly consume local and/or home-grown rice and vegetables. This
however does not increase the body burden.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
Size dependent line broadening in the emission spectra of single GaAs quantum dots: Impact of surface charges on spectral diffusion
Making use of droplet epitaxy, we systematically controlled the height of
self-assembled GaAs quantum dots by more than one order of magnitude. The
photoluminescence spectra of single quantum dots revealed the strong dependence
of the spectral linewidth on the dot height. Tall dots with a height of ~30 nm
showed broad spectral peaks with an average width as large as ~5 meV, but
shallow dots with a height of ~2 nm showed resolution-limited spectral lines
(<120 micro eV). The measured height dependence of the linewidths is in good
agreement with Stark coefficients calculated for the experimental shape
variation. We attribute the microscopic source of fluctuating electric fields
to the random motion of surface charges at the vacuum-semiconductor interface.
Our results offer guidelines for creating frequency-locked photon sources,
which will serve as key devices for long-distance quantum key distribution.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures; updated figs and their description
