Mangrove ecosystem of Red Sea coast (Saudi Arabia)
The present paper reviews critically the existing information on mangrove ecosystem of Saudi Arabian Red Sea coast and identifies problems and shortcomings that should be removed or remedied. Mangrove structure and composition seems to have been substantially studied along with salient environmental features, and these are thoroughly summarized herewith. However, the functional aspects, especially energy flow through the ecosystem, remain totally neglected. Both the flora and fauna indicate severe environmental conditions, such as very low nutrient levels, very high salinity values and hard bottom, which are unique to the area. Mangrove growth and diversity is very poor, although conditions in the southern part are relatively favourable. The extreme poverty of the ecosystem is supported by exports of organic matter from adjacent seaweed and seagrass ecosystems and also Sabakhas. Preponderance of epiphytic and benthic algae within the mangrove ecosystem is another source of nutrient replenishment in the otherwise oligotrophic habitat of Red Sea. Finally, a hypothetical model of energy flow in the ecosystem is proposed
A new species and a new variety of Amphisolenia Stein from the north Arabian Sea bordering Pakistan
A new species Amphisolenia nizamuddinii Mansoor and Saifullah sp. nov. and a new variety Amphisolenia schroederi var. pakistanensis Mansoor and Saifullah var. nov. are hereby described from Pakistan's shelf and deep sea vicinity during the transition period between the northeast and southwest monsoon seasons
Occurrence of Phaeocystis in mangrove creeks near Karachi
Phaeocystis is a prymnesiophycean flagellate which occurs preferably in cooler regions of the world and there are many accounts of its occurrence, life history, culture and seasonal abundance. On the other hand, information from warmer regions is extremely scarce. The present paper is a first report of its occurrence from the warmer area of northeast Arabian Sea
Two most abundant species of Ulva and Enteromorpha from coast of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
The present paper reports mass occurrence of two algal species Ulva grandis Saifullah and Nizamuddin and Enteromorpha intestinalis (Linnaeus) Link in a protected coastal area in Jeddah, heavily polluted with domestic sewage. They seem to prefer low salinity eutrophic waters for their maximum growth
First recorded bloom of Navicula Bory in a mangrove habitat of Karachi
Discolouration of sands and other marine substrata caused by benthic diatoms have been reported by Aleem (1950) Eaton and Moss (1975), Sullivan (1980), Maple (1983), Navarro (1983) and Wah and Wee (1988). However, this is for the first time such a phenomenon is being reported from a mangrove habitat of Karachi. It was caused by a pennate diatom Navicula cancellata Donkin
Women access to justice : mediation for domestic violence cases in Indonesia and Australia
Services for the victims of domestic violence have been provided by the Indonesian and Australian governments. The services include medical assistance, psychological counselling, financial assistance, and legal services. The Legal service for the victims of domestic violence is intended to restore the rights of the victims. However, the legal service often ignores the interests and needs of the victims by criminalizing the perpetrators through the criminal justice system or retributive justice system. This often makes victims disappointed, as not all victims of domestic violence want their cases to be resolved in the criminal court because it would give burdens for the victims such as financial and psychological burden. Therefore, some victims wanted their cases to be resolved without involving the litigation system, but through mediation. This research explores mediation conducted by the service institutions for the victims of domestic violence in Indonesia and Australia. The data collected through interviews with judges, police, social workers in the women crisis centers, and public or religious figures from social organizations. This research found that mediation for the victims of domestic violence has been carried out by the services institutions for the victims of domestic violence both in Indonesia and Australia. However, not all mediations conducted properly as some mediators both in-court and non- court have not been trained on mediation. In addition, the opinion that domestic violence should proceed through the criminal court, not mediation, is still strong among social workers at the women's crisis centers. This research enriches the literature on the services for the victims of domestic violence and provides some insights for alternative resolution for domestic violence cases
Quantum corrections to the entropy of charged rotating black holes
Hawking radiation from a black hole can be viewed as quantum tunneling of
particles through the event horizon. Using this approach we provide a general
framework for studying corrections to the entropy of black holes beyond
semiclassical approximations. Applying the properties of exact differentials
for three variables to the first law thermodynamics, we study charged rotating
black holes and explicitly work out the corrections to entropy and horizon area
for the Kerr-Newman and charged rotating BTZ black holes. It is shown that the
results for other geometries like the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m and
anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetimes follow easily
