Gill net fishery off Veraval during 1982-1990

    Get PDF
The fishery resources off Veraval are exploited intensively mainly by two gears, viz., trawl and gill nets. The gill net fishery has undergone changes by way of introduction of many out-board motorised canoes. Two types of crafts, wooden and FRP dugout canoes (with out-board engine) and plankbuilt boats are used for gill net fishing. Effort has remained almost constant during the 9 years. Fishes belonging to 10 groups formed about 98% of the gill net fishery

    The Indian mackerel

    Get PDF
The Indian mackerel forms the major pelagic resources along the Indian coast Its trend of production fiuctuates in space and time. Several scientists have conducted considerable research works on its biology, fishery and population structure from various parts of its distributional range at different periods of time. Its fishing pattern witnessed large changes in response to mechanisation, motorisation, innovative gear and synthetic nets, together with extension of fishing to deeper grounds. The paper reviews the status of mackerel fisheries research that were carried out in CMFRI since 1950 through regular monitoring programme for its sustainable harves

    Seagrass Meadows and Conservation

    Get PDF
Seagrasses are submerged monocotyleodnous flowering plants adapted to complete their life cycle below the sea surface. They harbour rich diversity of marine flora and fauna of commercial imprtance; and help prevent beach erosioan and siltation. Seagrass meadows are facing numerous challenges and threats in the present context and need urgent conservation strategies for increasing fish wealth and sea health

Stray occurrences of Bombay duck from the Malabar Coast of Kerala

The Bombay duck, Harpadon nehereus (Hamilton, 1822) form a major single species fishery along the Northwest coast from Ratnagiri in Maharashtra to the Gulf of Kutch in Saurashtra coast. They also form a seasonal fishery along Northeast coast (West Bengal & Odisha) and the northern part of Andhra Pradesh. The fishery is usually concentrated in a comparatively narrow depth zone up to 70 m and are mainly exploited by stationary bag net known as 'Dol' which are operated entirely by tidal forc

During a routine visit to Puthiappa fish landing center on 13-8-2010 while observing the trawl landings a few brightly colored rare fish specimens were also observed along with the landings of threadfin breams and lizard fishes. The rare specimens were later identified as 1. Pseudanthias sp., 2. Chelidoperca investigatoris (Alcock, 1895) 3. Roa jayakari (Norman, 1939

Revival of SST induced bleached anthozoan; Zoanthus sociatus in the intertidal zone of Thikkodi, Calicut was investigated for a period of 67 days from May to July 2010. Regaining of chlorophyll pigments of symbiotic zooxanthellae in the bleached Zoanthus colonies was correlated with reduction in SST indicating a temperature linked bleachin
