This paper aims to identify the current practices of customer satisfaction survey (CSS) among Malaysian libraries. A self-developed questionnaire was used to gauge the respondents’ opinions on the implementation of CSS in their library. The questionnaire was distributed to 150 Malaysian libraries comprising samples of academic, public and special libraries. Descriptive and crosstabs statistics were used in the data analysis. The results of the study revealed that most libraries 1) start to implement CSS from year 2000 to 2010; 2) have applied CSS as a part of ISO requirement; 3) generally CSS is managed by Customer Services Division, 4) use Self Develop Instruments and study will be done on a yearly basis. The results also revealed that there are apparent lacks of CSS training and results distribution among the library staff. There are few suggestions on improving CSS such as forming focus group discussion, online survey, involve more respondents and create CSS standard among Malaysian library

The aim of this review paper is to explore the library performance indicator in the academic library. In the year of 2011, Malaysian Academic Library had decided to use British Standard International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 11620: 2008, Library performance indicators as a standard to measure library performance. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) is defined as simple and effective measurement system that helps organization to explain and manage the service progress for customer, aligned with the vision and mission of the organization. A review of research articles will examine the theoretical framework, types of measures and performance indicators, studied by several authors. The indicators will be categorized into five areas of measurement, based on the British Standard categories. The categories are resources, access, infrastructure, use, efficiency, and lastly potentials and development. The findings of this study will become as an added value for the librarians to know what are the indicators and areas of measurement that are mostly used to measure the library effectiveness and how it can help to develop KPIs to be more practical, appropriate, informative and with valid measures

The rapid proliferation of information in the present era has important implications for the education and library usage of health professionals including medical students. The purpose of this study is to investigate the usage of library resources among first and third year medical students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) from July 2009 until April 2010. Adopting a survey research methodology involving 205 students, the findings suggest that the three mostly used library resources are the Internet, newspaper and library websites while the three mostly used facilities are computer, reading area and discussion room. In addition, it is also found that there is no significant difference between male and female in most of the resources usage. In contrast, significant difference could be observed between Year1 and Year 3 in most of the resources usage. The significance of the study could be assessed from both theoretical and practical perspective

Deep learning algorithms for personalized services and enhanced user experience in libraries

The integration of deep learning (DL) algorithms in library settings engenders a multitude of challenges and complexities, encompassing unintended ramifications, ethical quandaries, a dearth of specialized literature elucidating DL in library contexts, the intricacies of dataset selection and human intervention, and the inherent limitations when juxtaposed with the remarkable cognitive capabilities of the human brain. To surmount these hurdles and attain a profound comprehension of DL in library settings, a rigorous and comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) becomes imperative. This study investigates the application of DL algorithms in examining user-seeking behaviour to provide personalized services and enhance user experience in libraries. Through a comprehensive literature review, the study aims to uncover the benefits, challenges, and implications of integrating DL algorithms for user behaviour analysis and personalized services in library environments. The investigation encompasses a systematic literature review, employing a meticulous search and screening process utilizing the Scopus database. DL algorithms enable tailored recommendations, resource suggestions, and personalized search outcomes, improving information retrieval and user-centric services. Ethical considerations and ongoing research are emphasized to address challenges and maximize the potential of DL algorithms in libraries. The integration of DL algorithms in libraries yields substantial benefits, including improved information retrieval capabilities, augmented resource recommendation systems, and the delivery of user-centric services. The paper offers valuable insights to researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders operating within this field

Decoding digital competencies: a bibliometric analysis of academic librarianship

As the digital revolution permeates academic librarianship, the salience of digital competencies has burgeoned. This bibliometric study embarks on an in-depth exploration of the sphere of digital competencies in academic librarianship from 2010 to 2023, with the purpose of understanding its evolutionary trajectory, unearthing emerging research pathways, and anticipating the progression of the field. Using a strict bibliometric analysis of 144 scholarly articles written during this time, the study gives a full picture of how pedagogical and digital skills work together to shape the future of this important field. It underscores the integral interrelationship amongst bibliometrics, scientometrics, and informetrics—tools that, despite their significance, receive scant acknowledgement in the realm of digital competencies for academic librarianship. This comprehensive analysis highlights the universal importance of digital competencies, underscoring significant contributions from both developed and developing nations while signaling the imperative for enhanced digital competencies, particularly in less developed regions. The study presents an array of digital competency themes, emphasizing the need for regular upskilling opportunities to keep pace with the dynamic nature of digital technologies, while underscoring the challenges posed by the ceaseless evolution of technology. It concludes with a call to action for the academic librarianship community to navigate this evolving paradigm with nuanced understanding, critical insight, and unwavering dedication, committing to continuous growth and innovation to secure their irreplaceable role in the digital age. Serving as a pioneering contribution, this study presents a wide-ranging analysis of the current trajectories and advancements in digital competencies for academic librarianship, delineating the pathway for subsequent academic investigations in this critical area of inquiry

Can academic librarians as data scientists revolutionise user-centric e-learning?

This investigation illuminates the vital contributions of academic librarians (ALs) functioning as data scientists (DSs) within the e-learning landscapes of Malaysian public universities. Derived from comprehensive interviews with ten experience ALs, this study distinguishes three key areas of contribution towards user-centric and effective e-learning: bolstering user experience and usability; endorsing continuous improvement and professional development; and stimulating interdepartmental collaboration and innovation. Despite the significant progress made by ALs, the study acknowledges the formidable challenges faced by these professionals in their capacity as DSs, specifically in areas of professional growth and evaluation. The paper presents strategic recommendations to overcome these obstacles, such as amplifying ALs' data science competencies, advocating for ongoing professional development, and endorsing the validation of their expertise through accreditation. By highlighting the essential role and proactive contributions of ALs as DSs, this study offers valuable insights and guidelines towards cultivating a robust and influential e-learning environment. Concluding with suggestions for future research, this study aims to propel the progression of academic librarianship and the enhancement of e-learning outcomes

This paper discusses the discovey of the right Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in Malaysian libraries. As one of the measurement performance methodologies, KPIs are used to improved the overall organizational management and by applying the KPIs, it is considered an effort to transform libraries management towards excellence. The KPIs can be the key to organizations' success and for libraries to achieve their vision, mission, business strategy, objectives and targets. KPI Model was discussed by a few researchers in this paper to identify the right KPIs for libraries. The discussioncovers the library performance indicator standards by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The performance indicators described in this International Standard can be used effectively in the evaluation of libraries such as resources, access, infrastructure, use, efficiency and potentials and development. This paper also describes the flow of how to develop KPIs as proposed by Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit, Prime Minister's Department Libraries need to identify their core business, core process and service before they identify the KPIs. The measures or indicators must be accepted, understood and owned across the organization in order to ensure that the performance measurement becomes effective. The discussion in this paper will help libraries understand and identify the right KPIs for libraries
