Alterations in T1 of normal and reperfused infarcted myocardium after Gd-BOPTA versus GD-DTPA on inversion recovery EPI.
This study tested whether Gd-BOPTA/Dimeg or Gd-DTPA exerts greater relaxation enhancement for blood and reperfused infarcted myocardium. Relaxivity of Gd-BOPTA is increased by weak binding to serum albumin. Thirty-six rats were subjected to reperfused infarction before contrast (doses = 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 mmol/kg). delta R1 was repeatedly measured over 30 min. Gd-BOPTA caused greater delta R1 for blood and myocardium than did Gd-DTPA; clearance of both agents from normal- and infarcted myocardium was similar to blood clearance; plots of delta R1 myocardium/delta R1 blood showed equilibrium phase contrast distribution. Fractional contrast agent distribution volumes were approximately 0.24 for both agents in normal myocardium, 0.98 and 1.6 for Gd-DTPA and Gd-BOPTA, respectively, in reperfused infarction. The high value for Gd-BOPTPA was ascribed to greater relaxivity in infarction versus blood. It was concluded that Gd-BOPTA/Dimeg causes a greater delta R1 than Gd-DTPA in regions which contain serum albumin
Coherent Topological Charge Structure in Models and QCD
In an effort to clarify the significance of the recent observation of
long-range topological charge coherence in QCD gauge configurations, we study
the local topological charge distributions in two-dimensional sigma
models, using the overlap Dirac operator to construct the lattice topological
charge. We find long-range sign coherence of topological charge along extended
one-dimensional structures in two-dimensional spacetime. We discuss the
connection between the long range topological structure found in and
the observed sign coherence along three-dimensional sheets in four-dimensional
QCD gauge configurations. In both cases, coherent regions of topological charge
form along membrane-like surfaces of codimension one. We show that the Monte
Carlo results, for both two-dimensional and four-dimensional gauge theory,
support a view of topological charge fluctuations suggested by Luscher and
Witten. In this framework, the observed membranes are associated with
boundaries between ``k-vacua,'' characterized by an effective local value of
which jumps by across the boundary.Comment: 26 page
Primary radiotherapy in progressive optic nerve sheath meningiomas: a long-term follow-up study
Background/aims: To report the outcome of primary radiotherapy in patients with progressive optic nerve sheath meningioma (ONSM). Methods: The clinical records of all patients were reviewed in a retrospective, observational, multicentre study. Results: Thirty-four consecutive patients were included. Twenty-six women and eight men received conventional or stereotactic fractionated radiotherapy, and were followed for a median 58 (range 51–156) months. Fourteen eyes (41%) showed improved visual acuity of at least two lines on the Snellen chart. In 17 (50%) eyes, the vision stabilised, while deterioration was noted in three eyes (9%). The visual outcome was not associated with age at the time of radiotherapy (p=0.83), sex (p=0.43), visual acuity at the time of presentation (p=0.22) or type of radiotherapy (p=0.35). Optic disc swelling was associated with improved visual acuity (p<0.01) and 4/11 patients with optic atrophy also showed improvement. Long-term complications were dry eyes in five patients, cataracts in three, and mild radiation retinopathy in four. Conclusion: Primary radiotherapy for patients with ONSM is associated with long-term improvement of visual acuity and few adverse effects.Peerooz Saeed, Leo Blank, Dinesh Selva, John G. Symmetric Operation of the Resonant Exchange Qubit
We operate a resonant exchange qubit in a highly symmetric triple-dot
configuration using IQ-modulated RF pulses. At the resulting three-dimensional
sweet spot the qubit splitting is an order of magnitude less sensitive to all
relevant control voltages, compared to the conventional operating point, but we
observe no significant improvement in the quality of Rabi oscillations. For
weak driving this is consistent with Overhauser field fluctuations modulating
the qubit splitting. For strong driving we infer that effective voltage noise
modulates the coupling strength between RF drive and the qubit, thereby
quickening Rabi decay. Application of CPMG dynamical decoupling sequences
consisting of up to n = 32 {\pi} pulses significantly prolongs qubit coherence,
leading to marginally longer dephasing times in the symmetric configuration.
This is consistent with dynamical decoupling from low frequency noise, but
quantitatively cannot be explained by effective gate voltage noise and
Overhauser field fluctuations alone. Our results inform recent strategies for
the utilization of partial sweet spots in the operation and long-distance
coupling of triple-dot qubits.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Negative spin exchange in a multielectron quantum dot
By operating a one-electron quantum dot (fabricated between a multielectron
dot and a one-electron reference dot) as a spectroscopic probe, we study the
spin properties of a gate-controlled multielectron GaAs quantum dot at the
transition between odd and even occupation number. We observe that the
multielectron groundstate transitions from spin-1/2-like to singlet-like to
triplet-like as we increase the detuning towards the next higher charge state.
The sign reversal in the inferred exchange energy persists at zero magnetic
field, and the exchange strength is tunable by gate voltages and in-plane
magnetic fields. Complementing spin leakage spectroscopy data, the inspection
of coherent multielectron spin exchange oscillations provides further evidence
for the sign reversal and, inferentially, for the importance of non-trivial
