    Suggesting A Guideline To Information And Communication Technolgoy Service Development In Accordance With User Value Driven Perspective

    Information and Communication Technology (ICT) service industry, especially the mobile service market, has been one of the core growth engines for Korean economy during the last decades. However, ICT service market is currently experiencing severe stagnation mainly due to the saturation in customer expenditure. Until recently, a technology intensive approach has been playing a critical role in terms of ICT service development in Korea. However, limitations in this technology based method have been exposed with respect to locating and addressing dynamic and in-depth user needs and demands. Various ICT services have been introduced into the market in accordance with the technology intensive approach; however, there is only the mere presence of success in fulfilling user satisfaction. Thus, nowadays, a user value-driven approach is widely gaining attention as a substitute or/and complement to conventional methods. In fact, user value-driven approach is not a brand new idea; it has been broadly practiced in many none-ICT relevant fields, however, as for ICT industry, user-driven approach is still in early stage of the adoption. Therefore, the major research question of this study is to explore user’s hidden needs and demands and consider appropriate methods to apply them into ICT service developments

    There are many countries which suffer from high increase rate of old people population over the world. The steep increase in elderly has caused many changes and challenges, and one of the most serious and biggest challenges is caring issues. It became hard for the aged care receivers to receive caring from human caregivers, and also difficult for caregivers to take care of the aged well due to many reasons. Thus, it is time to find alternatives which can support or help caregivers‟ caring activities. The research focuses on exploring caregivers‟ intention which want to use ICT as supporter or helper of their caring. Moreover, it reveals more specific needs under different circumstances, and common values which caregivers want to receive from ICT caring services. The findings shows there are enough needs for ICT as helper or supporter for caring in the market and exploration of more specific needs and common values provides useful guideline for the ICT service providers

    Fabrication of pyramidal probes with various periodic patterns and a single nanopore

    The nanometer-scale patterned pyramidal probe with an electron beam-induced nanopore on the pyramid apex is an excellent candidate for an optical biosensor. The nanoapertures surrounded with various periodic groove patterns on the pyramid sides were fabricated using a focused ion beam technique, where the optical characteristics of the fabricated apertures with rectangular, circular, and elliptical groove patterns were investigated. The elliptical groove patterns on the pyramid were designed to maintain an identical distance between the grooves and the apex for the surface waves and, among the three patterns, the authors observed the highest optical transmission from the elliptically patterned pyramidal probe. A 103-fold increase of the transmitted optical intensity was observed after patterning with elliptical grooves, even without an aperture on the pyramid apex.     AKAP12 regulates human blood-retinal barrier formation by downregulation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha

    Many diseases of the eye such as retinoblastoma, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity are associated with blood-retinal barrier (BRB) dysfunction. Identifying the factors that contribute to BRB formation during human eye development and maintenance could provide insights into such diseases. Here we show that A-kinase anchor protein 12 (AKAP12) induces BRB formation by increasing angiopoietin-1 and decreasing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in astrocytes. We reveal that AKAP12 downregulates the level of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) protein by enhancing the interaction of HIF-1alpha with pVHL (von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor protein) and PHD2 (prolyl hydroxylase 2). Conditioned media from AKAP12-overexpressing astrocytes induced barriergenesis by upregulating the expression of tight junction proteins in human retina microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs). Compared with the retina during BRB maturation, AKAP12 expression in retinoblastoma patient tissue was markedly reduced whereas that of VEGF was increased. These findings suggest that AKAP12 may induce BRB formation through antiangiogenesis and barriergenesis in the developing human eye and that defects in this mechanism can lead to a loss of tight junction proteins and contribute to the development of retinal pathologies such as retinoblastoma

    Factors associated with neurodevelopment in preterm infants with systematic inflammation

    Background Several studies have suggested that adverse neurodevelopment could be induced by systemic inflammation in preterm infants. We aimed to investigate whether preterm infants with systemic inflammation would have impaired neurodevelopment and which biomarkers and neurophysiologic studies during inflammation are associated with poor neurodevelopment. Methods This prospective cohort study enrolled infants born before 30 weeks of gestation or with birth weight < 1250 g. Infants were grouped according to the presence of systemic inflammation: Control (no inflammation, n = 49), I (systemic inflammation, n = 45). Blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples for markers of brain injury and inflammation were collected and amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) was performed within 4 h of septic workup. We evaluated aEEG at 35 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA), head circumference at 36 weeks PMA, and brain MRI at discharge. The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development III (Bayley-III) was performed at a corrected age (CA) of 18 months. Results The I group had more white matter injuries (2 vs. 26.7%, Control vs. I, respectively) at the time of discharge, lower brain functional maturation (9.5 vs. 8), and smaller head size (z-score − 1.45 vs. -2.12) at near-term age and poorer neurodevelopment at a CA of 18 months than the control (p < 0.05). Among the I group, the proportion of immature neutrophils (I/T ratios) and IL-1 beta levels in the CSF were associated with aEEG measures at the day of symptom onset (D0). Seizure spike on aEEG at D0 was significantly correlated with motor and social-emotional domains of Bayley-III (p < 0.05). The I/T ratio and CRP and TNF-α levels of blood at D0, white matter injury on MRI at discharge, head circumference and seizure spikes on aEEG at near-term age were associated with Bayley-III scores at a CA of 18 months. Conclusions Systemic inflammation induced by clinical infection and NEC are associated with neurodevelopmental impairment in preterm infants.     Guidelines for Tailored Chemical Functionalization of Graphene

    Graphene oxide (GO) has been synthesized by the Hummers method with modification of experimental condition by different research groups, but there is no guideline to prepare tailored GO for targeted applications. In this research, we suggest a guideline for tailor-fittable functionalization of graphene on the basis of the scope of our previous report on the two-step oxidation of GO. We describe a detailed procedure for synthesis of GO, effects of degree of step I oxidation on characteristics of GO and comparing them with effects of degree of step II oxidation. Characteristic changes of GO occurring during step I oxidation and those occurring during step II oxidation are different in species of oxygen functional groups, interlayer spacing, thermal stability, size distribution, and yield of GO. On the basis of the results, three types of tailor-fitted GO for a fiber, transparent conducting film, and hydrogen storage material are synthesized by controlling the degree of step I and step II oxidation. Compared to the reference GO synthesized by conventional modified Hummers method, the tailor-fitted GO showed 33.5%, 117%, and 104% enhanced performance in strength of the fiber, figure of merits of transparent conducting film, and hydrogen storage, respectively. Our results show that the performance of GO based application is significantly influenced by the synthesis condition of GO, and optimized performance of the applications can be obtained by the tailor-fitted functionalization of GO. We anticipate that this study would be helpful for a variety of researches, both synthesis and application of GO

    Clinical and pathological significance of ROS1 expression in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

We investigated the clinical and pathological significance of ROS1 expression in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Methods: One hundred ninety-four patients with curatively resected intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma were included in this study. Tumor tissue specimens were collected and analyzed for ROS1 gene rearrangement using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and ROS1 protein expression using immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: ROS1 immunohistochemistry was positive (moderate or strong staining) in 72 tumors (37.1 %). ROS1 protein expression was significantly correlated with well differentiated tumors, papillary or mucinous histology, oncocytic/hepatoid or intestinal type tumors, and periductal infiltrating or intraductal growing tumors (vs. mass-forming cholangiocarcinoma). ROS-expressing tumors were associated with better disease-free survival (30.1 months for ROS1 expression (+) tumors vs. 9.0 months for ROS1 (-) tumors, p = 0.006). Moreover, ROS1 expression was an independent predictor of better disease-free survival in a multivariate analysis (HR 0.607, 95 % CI 0.377-0.976; p = 0.039). Although break-apart FISH was successfully performed in 102 samples, a split pattern indicative of ROS1 gene rearrangement was not found in the examined samples. Conclusion: ROS1 protein expression was associated with well-differentiated histology and better survival in our patients with resected intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.     Prognostic impact of AJCC response criteria for neoadjuvant chemotherapy in stage II/III breast cancer patients: breast cancer subtype analyses

Since its introduction, 6–8 cycles of NAC has become the standard regimen to improve the outcome of these patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prognostic impact of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) response criteria and this tools usefulness in four different breast cancer subtypes. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of clinical stage II/III breast cancer patients who received NAC of more than 6 cycles. Response after NAC and the clinicopathological factors were reviewed. AJCC response criteria for NAC were adopted from the AJCC Manual, 7th edition: complete response (CR), partial response (PR), and no response (NR). Results A total of 183 patients were enrolled; 22 (12.0 %), 123 (67.2 %), and 38 (20.8 %) patients showed CR, PR, and NR, respectively. The AJCC response was significantly associated with relapse-free survival (RFS) (P < 0.001), whereas pathologic CR (pCR), the current gold standard for response evaluation for NAC, was not (P = 0.140). AJCC response was a significant prognostic factor for RFS in all four breast cancer subtypes, namely luminal A (P = 0.006), luminal B (P = 0.001), HER-2 enriched (P = 0.039), and triple-negative breast cancer (P = 0.035). Conclusions The AJCC response criteria represent a simple and easily reproducible tool for response evaluation of NAC patients and a useful clinical prognostic marker for RFS. These criteria also have a prognostic impact in all four breast cancer subtypes, including luminal A in which pCR has a limited role

    Prognostic influence of body mass index and body weight gain during adjuvant FOLFOX chemotherapy in Korean colorectal cancer patients

However, the effect of obesity and body weight gain in Asian colorectal cancer patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy has not been studied thus far. Methods: We have analyzed the association between disease-free survival (DFS) and obesity/body weight change during treatment in Korean stage III or high-risk stage II colorectal cancer patients treated with adjuvant 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin/oxaliplatin. BMI was classified according to WHO Asia-Pacific classification. Weight change was calculated by comparing body weights measured at the last chemotherapy cycle and before surgery. Results: Among a total of 522 patients, 35.7 % of patients were obese (BMI >= 25 kg/m(2)) and 29.1 % were overweight (BMI, 23-24.9 kg/m(2)) before surgery. 18.0 % of patients gained = 5 kg and 26.1 % gained 2-4.9 kg during the adjuvant chemotherapy period. Baseline BMI or body weight change was not associated with DFS in the overall study population. However, body weight gain (>= 5 kg) was associated with inferior DFS (adjusted hazard ratio 2.04, 95 % confidence interval 1.02-4.08, p = 0.043) in overweight and obese patients (BMI >= 23.0 kg/m(2)). Conclusion: In Korean colorectal cancer patients treated with adjuvant FOLFOX chemotherapy, body weight gain during the treatment period has a negative prognostic influence in overweight and obese patients

    Characteristics of Non-typhoidal Salmonella Isolates from Human and Broiler-chickens in Southwestern Seoul, Korea

    Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is an important commensal microorganism. The purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiological relation between NTS isolates from livestock and NTS isolates from human by analyzing antimicrobial susceptibilities and performing molecular typing. We determined the serotypes of 36 human clinical isolates and 64 livestock isolates, performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing against 8 antibiotics, and determined the molecular types of isolated NTS spp. by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). In human isolates, S. enteritidis was the most common serotype (17 isolates; 47.2%) and S. typhimurium the second most (8 isolates; 22.2%). In livestock isolates, S. typhimurium was the most common serotype (15 isolates; 23.44%), and S. enteritidis was the second most (14 isolates; 21.88%). Ampicillin and tetracycline resistance were 50% (32/64 isolates) each among broiler-chicken NTS isolates. No human or livestock NTS isolates showed resistance to ciprofloxacin, TMP-SMX, or ceftriaxone. However, 19.4% (7/36) and 46.8% (30/64) of the human and livestock NTS isolates were resistant to nalidixic acid (MIC ≥16 mg/mL), respectively. The presence of the three identical PFGE molecular types from human and broiler-chicken NTS isolates suggests the possibility of transmission from livestock to humans
