    Ambipolar Heating of Magnetars

    Magnetars, neutron stars thought to be with ultra-strong magnetic fields of 10141510^{14 - 15} G, are observed to be much hotter than ordinary pulsars with 1012\sim 10^{12} G, and additional heating sources are required. One possibility is heating by the ambipolar diffusion in the stellar core. This scenario is examined by calculating the models using the relativistic thermal evolutionary code without making the isothermal approximation. The results show that this scenario can be consistent with most of the observed magnetar temperature data.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table.     Hepatitis E virus in Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) captured around pig farm

    BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) transmitted via the oral route through the consumption of contaminated water or uncooked or undercooked contaminated meat has been implicated in major outbreaks. Rats may play a critical role in HEV outbreaks, considering their negative effects on environmental hygiene and food sanitation. Although the serological evidence of HEV infection in wild rodents has been reported worldwide, the infectivity and propagation of HEV in wild rats remain unknown. To investigate if rats are a possible carrier of HEV, we studied wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) that were caught near a pig farm, where HEV was prevalent among the pigs. METHODS: We examined 56 Norway rats for HEV. RNA from internal organs was examined for RT-PCR and positive samples were sequenced. Positive tissue samples were incubated with A549 cell line to isolate HEV. Anti-HEV antibodies were detected by ELISA. RESULTS: Sixteen rats were seropositive, and the HEV RNA was detected in 10 of the 56 rats. Sequencing of the partial ORF1 gene from 7 samples resulted in partially sequenced HEV, belonging to genotype 3, which was genetically identical to the HEV prevalent in the swine from the source farm. The infectious HEVs were isolated from the Norway rats by using the human A549 cell line. CONCLUSIONS: There was a relatively high prevalence (17.9%) of the HEV genome in wild Norway rats. The virus was mainly detected in the liver and spleen. The results indicate that these animals might be possible carrier of swine HEV in endemic regions. The HEV contamination risk due to rats needs to be examined in human habitats

    Efficacy of erlotinib and imatinib in a patient with a rectal gastrointestinal stromal tumor and synchronous pulmonary adenocarcinoma : A case report

    The synchronous existence of lung cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) is considered to be extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about the treatment of lung cancer and GIST with two kinds of molecular targeting drugs. An 83-year-old woman with a rectal GIST, which carried a c-kit mutation, and pulmonary adenocarcinoma, which exhibited an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation, was treated alternately with imatinib and erlotinib. Good control over both diseases was achieved for two years. The present case is not only of interest due to the rare co-occurrence of GIST and lung cancer, but also because it involved two tumors carrying different gene mutations, and both tumors were brought under control using different molecular targeting drugs

    Problems in three Japanese drug users with Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection

    Numbers of individuals infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are increasing in Japan. The majority of them are Men who have sex with men and a part of them take drugs as ‘Sex drug’ at their sexual intercourse. Especially, Amyl nitrite, Methamphetamine, 5-methoxy-N, N-diisopropyltryptamine (5-MeO-DIPT Foxy), and 3, 4- methylenedioxy- methamphetamine (MDMA Ecstasy) are used, and they sometimes cause the physical and mental disorders. However, the actual drug inducing troubles among Japanese HIV-infected drug users had not yet been discussed enough. In this report, we describe three cases with HIV infection a case developed severe neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) after taking 5-MeO-DIPT, a case with persistent convulsion due to multiple drug intake and a case with rhabdomyolysis due to the nonsubjective methamphetamine intake. Through these cases, we raise and discuss several underlying problems associated with drug use among HIV-infected individuals
