General values and work values of social work students in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
This paper reports research that examines general values and work values held by university students studying social work in Hong Kong. Comparison is also made with values held by similar students studying in different majors. Results indicated that social work students rated general values such as benevolence, self-direction, universalism and tradition higher than their non-social work counterparts. They also rated work values such as altruism, creativity, supervisory relations, independence and intellectual stimulation more highly. However, the social work students held lower values associated with economic returns, thus supporting a view that students with an inclination towards social work tend to espouse self-transcendence and intrinsic work values, and are less influenced by material rewards. Among the social work respondents, gender differences were found in both general and work values. Differences were also noted between the groups with different modes of study. Implications for social work education and future research are discussed.postprin

Super's Work Values Inventory: Issues of Subtest Internal Consistency Using a Sample of Chinese University Students in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
The authors discuss observed weaknesses in internal consistency (Cronbach's alphas below .60) within five subtests of the Work Values Inventory when translated into Chinese and used with a sample of 211 university students in Hong Kong. Possible reasons for the weaknesses are explored, and suggestions are made for improvement.postprin

Annulatascus fusiformis sp. nov., a new freshwater ascomycete from the Philippines

    Get PDF
Annulatascus fusiformis sp. nov. is described based on a specimen collected on submerged wood from a river in the Philippines. The species possesses globose to subglobose, black, immersed ascomata with long hyaline necks; wide, septate, tapering paraphyses, and cylindrical unitunicate asci with a relatively massive refractive apical ring. In this respect it is similar to species of Annulatascus, however, A. fusiformis differs from other species in the genus, as ascospores are provided with bipolar mucilaginous pad-like appendages. The species is illustrated with light, scanning and electron micrographs.published_or_final_versio

An interactive mobile learning system for generic wireless networks

    Get PDF
This paper describes how a simple interactive mobile learning system, originally developed for the 2G system, evolved to a system for the 3G (TD-SCDMA) system, then to a system for the WiFi access system and finally become a generic Interactive Wireless Mobile Learning System which can be used in any wireless networks. The system designs in different stages of evolution are presented. To promote mobile learning and celebrate the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the Wireless Mobile Learning System was modified to become a tool used in an Inter-School Mobile Quiz Contest with participation of 17 secondary and primary schools and the results were very successful and encouraging.published_or_final_versionThe 5th IEEE GCC Conference & Exhibition, Kuwait City, Kuwait, 17-19 March 2009. Ultrastructural studies of Massarina ingoldiana and M. purpurascens

    Get PDF
Ascus and ascospore appendage structures can be important characters in delineation of genera. We have therefore examined the ascus and ascospore ultrastructure of Massarina ingoldiana and M. purpurascens, as Massarina is thought to be a heterogeneous genus. The ascus wall of M. ingoldiana is two layered and comparable to M. thalassiae. Ascospores of both species comprise an electron-transparent mesosporium, an electron-dense episporium and an exosporial mucilaginous sheath. In this respect they are similar to the ultrastructure of other Massarina species, and should be maintained in Massarina.published_or_final_versio

    Poly[dimethylammonium aquadi-μ-oxalato-europate(III) trihydrate]

    Get PDF
In the crystal structure of the polymeric title compound, (C2H8N)[Eu(C2O4)2(H2O)]·3H2O, the independent oxalate that lies on a general position chelates to two Eu atoms, as do the other two oxalates that lie on different centres of inversion, the bridging mode of the oxalates giving rise to a three-dimensional anionic network. The water-coordinated Eu atom exists in a tricapped trigonal–prismatic geometry. The cations and solvent water molecules occupy the cavities of the network and are involved in hydrogen bonding with each other and with the network.published_or_final_versio

Variation of microphysics in wind bubbles: an alternative mechanism for explaining the rebrightenings in Gamma-ray burst afterglows

    Get PDF
Conventionally, long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to be caused by the core collapses of massive stars. During the lifetime of a massive star, a stellar wind bubble environment should be produced. Furthermore, the microphysics shock parameters may vary along with the evolution of the fireball. Here, we investigate the variation of the microphysics shock parameters under the condition of wind bubble environment, and allow the microphysics shock parameters to be discontinuous at shocks in the ambient medium. It is found that our model can acceptably reproduce the rebrightenings observed in GRB afterglows, at least in some cases. The effects of various model parameters on rebrightenings are investigated. The rebrightenings observed in both the R-band and X-ray afterglow light curves of GRB 060206, GRB 070311 and GRB 071010A are reproduced in this model. © 2009 The Authors.
