    Increases of Antibiotic Resistance in Excessive Use of Antibiotics in Smallholder Dairy Farms in Northern Thailand

    Antibiotic resistance patterns of bacterial isolates from both quarter teat-tip swabs and their quarter milk samples were evaluated in smallholder dairy farms in northern Thailand with excessive use of antibiotics (HIGH) compared with normal use (NORM). Results from teat-tip swab samples showed that the percentage of Bacillus spp. resistance to overall antibiotics was significantly lower in the NORM group than that of the HIGH group, whereas, the resistance percentage of coagulase-negative staphylococci in the NORM group was higher than that of the HIGH one. The overall mastitis-causing bacteria isolated from milk samples were environmental streptococci (13.8%), coagulase-negative staphylococci (9.9%), Staphylococcus aureus (5.4%), and Corynebacterium bovis (4.5%). Both staphylococci and streptococci had significantly higher percentages of resistance to cloxacillin and oxacillin in the HIGH group when compared to the NORM one. An occurrence of vancomycin-resistant bacteria was also observed in the HIGH group. In conclusion, the smallholder dairy farms with excessive use of antibiotics had a higher probability of antibiotic-resistant pattern than the farms with normal use

    HACCP-based quality risk management approach to udder health problems on dairy farms

    Against the background of prevailing udder health problems on dairy farms, this paper discusses a new approach to mastitis control. Current udder health control programmes, such as the 'five-point plan', are highlighted and their drawbacks indicated. The concept and principles of hazard analysis critical control points (HACCP) are introduced. The eight core elements of this concept are dealt with by using the example of a dairy herd with a mastitis problem due to Staphylococcus aureus. The various steps to be taken in the development of a HACCP-based quality risk management programme are illustrated through the application of core elements. Finally, it is shown that the HACCP key words, structure, organisation, planning, communication and formalisation; which do not frequently appear in conventional herd health and production management programmes can contribute to better udder health. The role of the veterinarian can be paramount and of added value, if he/she is willing to invest in new knowledge and skills, such as the HACCP concept, farm economics, animal nutrition, and particularly the role of coach to the dairy farmer in the implementation of preventative measures in relation to udder health

    Effect of yeast culture on milk production and metabolic and reproductive performance of early lactation dairy cows

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The main objective of this study was to estimate the effect of supplementation with <it>Saccaromyces cerevisiae (SC</it>) (Yea-Sacc<sup>Âź </sup>1026) on milk production, metabolic parameters and the resumption of ovarian activity in early lactation dairy cows.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The experiment was conducted during 2005/2006 in a commercial tied-house farm with an average of 200 milking Estonian Holstein Friesian cows. The late pregnant multiparous cows (n = 46) were randomly divided into two groups; one group received 10 g yeast culture from two weeks before to 14 weeks after calving. The groups were fed a total mixed ration with silages and concentrates. Milk recording data and blood samples for plasma metabolites were taken. Resumption of luteal activity was determined using milk progesterone (P<sub>4</sub>) measurements. Uterine bacteriology and ovarian ultrasonography (US) were performed and body condition scores (BCS) and clinical disease occurrences were recorded. For analysis, the statistical software Stata 9.2 and R were used to compute Cox proportional hazard and linear mixed models.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The average milk production per cow did not differ between the groups (32.7 ± 6.4 vs 30.7 ± 5.3 kg/day in the SC and control groups respectively), but the production of milk fat (<it>P </it>< 0.001) and milk protein (<it>P </it>< 0.001) were higher in the SC group. There was no effect of treatment on BCS. The analysis of energy-related metabolites in early lactation showed no significant differences between the groups. In both groups higher levels of ÎČ-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) appeared from days 14 to 28 after parturition and the concentration of non-esterfied fatty acid (NEFA) was higher from days 1–7 post partum (PP). According to US and P<sub>4 </sub>results, all cows in both groups ovulated during the experimental period. The resumption of ovarian activity (first ovulations) and time required for elimination of bacteria from the uterus did not differ between the groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Supplementation with SC had an effect on milk protein and fat production, but did not influence the milk yield. No effects on PP metabolic status, bacterial elimination from the uterus nor the resumption of ovarian activity were found.</p

    Changing trends in mastitis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>The global dairy industry, the predominant pathogens causing mastitis, our understanding of mastitis pathogens and the host response to intramammary infection are changing rapidly. This paper aims to discuss changes in each of these aspects. Globalisation, energy demands, human population growth and climate change all affect the dairy industry. In many western countries, control programs for contagious mastitis have been in place for decades, resulting in a decrease in occurrence of <it>Streptococcus agalactiae </it>and <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>mastitis and an increase in the relative impact of <it>Streptococcus uberis </it>and <it>Escherichia coli </it>mastitis. In some countries, <it>Klebsiella </it>spp. or <it>Streptococcus dysgalactiae </it>are appearing as important causes of mastitis. Differences between countries in legislation, veterinary and laboratory services and farmers' management practices affect the distribution and impact of mastitis pathogens. For pathogens that have traditionally been categorised as contagious, strain adaptation to human and bovine hosts has been recognised. For pathogens that are often categorised as environmental, strains causing transient and chronic infections are distinguished. The genetic basis underlying host adaptation and mechanisms of infection is being unravelled. Genomic information on pathogens and their hosts and improved knowledge of the host's innate and acquired immune responses to intramammary infections provide opportunities to expand our understanding of bovine mastitis. These developments will undoubtedly contribute to novel approaches to mastitis diagnostics and control.</p

    Molecular epidemiology of Streptococcus uberis intramammary infections: Persistent and transient patterns of infection in a dairy herd

    A longitudinal observational study was carried out to explore transmission dynamics and duration of infection of Streptococcus uberis. Quarter milk samples were collected aseptically for bacterial culture from all lactating cows once a month over a 10-mo period. Molecular typing of S. uberis mastitis was performed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Molecular typing was used to determine episodes of S. uberis intramammary infection (IMI). Comparisons of spontaneous cure among PFGE types were performed using Fisher's exact chi-squared tests. Differences of duration among PFGE types and between periods of lactation were tested with Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox's proportional hazard model. Among a total of 851 quarter samples, 145 milk samples were detected with S. uberis presence. Based on results of PFGE, 66 episodes of S. uberis IMI were determined. From the 8 main PFGE types (A–H), PFGE type D, E, F1, F2, G, and H had only one episode indicating no evidence for transmission, subsequently defined as environmental S. uberis strains. In contrast, PFGE types A1, A2, B, C1, and C2 had at least 2 infection episodes caused by the same strain in different quarters or cows, indicating that these strains would be able to transmit to other quarters or cows. These strains were defined as contagious strains. The majority of IMI were attributable to PFGE type A1 (55%), B (17%), and A2 (11%). Spontaneous cures were observed in 35 IMI episodes. Of these 35 IMI cures, 91.4% were in IMI with duration of infection of 1 mo, n = 25, and 2 mo, n = 6. The remaining 8.6% was in IMI with duration of infection >2 mo, n = 4. Based on results from Cox's proportional hazard model, environmental S. uberis episodes were likely to have spontaneous cure with shorter duration compared with contagious S. uberis with PFGE type B (hazard ratio = 8.4). Quarters infected with S. uberis strain PFGE type A in early lactation were more likely to persist compared with those infected in late lactation (hazard ratio = 7.57). In conclusion, the majority of S. uberis IMI in this herd were transient and showed spontaneous cure. In addition to environmental S. uberis IMI, at least 3 types of contagious IMI S. uberis can be defined as (1) short duration of IMI and likely to have spontaneous cure, (2) long duration and unlikely to have spontaneous cure, and (3) wide range of duration of IMI either transient or persistent where spontaneous cure may occur depending on host defense capacity.</p

    Effects of on-farm supplemental feeding of probiotic Bacillus subtilis on milk production in lactating dairy cows under tropical conditions

    The objective of the study was to determine the effect of Bacillus subtilis supplementation on the production of heat-stressed cows in a tropical environment during summer and rainy seasons. Twenty-eight lactating crossbred Holstein-Friesian cows (89 ± 50 days in milk) on four farms in Thailand were randomly assigned to treatment sequences in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design. Each 21 days of experimental period included 13 days of adaptation followed by data collection from day 14 through 21. A basal ration was fed to all cows. Cows were individually fed 0 (CON), 0.5 × 1011 (BS0.5), 1 × 1011 (BS1) or 2 × 1011 CFU (BS2) of B. subtilis/day. Throughout the study, microclimatic conditions inside the barns were recorded. Milk weights were measured on days 14 and 21, and milk samples were collected on day 21. Whole blood samples were collected for haematological and biochemical analyses only during the first period of the study. Milk yield increased (P < 0.01) linearly as the level of B. subtilis increased. The temperature-humidity index (THI) was negatively related to milk yield (r = −0.52, P < 0.01), protein (r = −0.51, P < 0.01) and lactose (r = −0.49, P < 0.01). Cows fed B. subtilis at the level of 2 × 1011 CFU/day produced 1.7 kg/day more milk. So, it was indicated that milk yield increased linearly with the level of supplemented B. subtilis, and the supplementation did not exert any effect on haematological and biochemical parameters

    Low somatic cell count : a risk factor for subsequent clinical mastitis in a dairy herd

    A case-control study was conducted to evaluate factors measured at the udder inflammation-free state as risk factors for subsequent clinical mastitis. The factors including somatic cell count (SCC), body condition score, milk yield, percentages of milk fat and milk protein, and diseases were evaluated for their association with the results of udder inflammatory response. The results of the response were specified as presence (case) and absence (control) of clinical signs of mastitis. Data on Holstein Friesian cows calving from January 1984 to November 1996 from a commercial farm with low bulk milk SCC were used. Univariable and multivariable random-effect logistic models were used to evaluate the effect of those factors on the risk of clinical mastitis. The following variables were associated with increased odds of case versus control events in the univariable analysis: early lactation period, low SCC, high milk yield, high percentage of milk protein, high percentage of milk fat, low body condition score, retained placenta, and milk fever. For the final multivariable model of all variables used for analysis, only low SCC remained significantly associated with increased risk of subsequent clinical mastitis. The authors concluded that very low SCC during the udder inflammation-free state are associated with increased risk of clinical mastitis
