Changes in the soil organic carbon balance on China’s cropland during the last two decades of the 20th century
Agro-ecosystems play an important role in regulating global changes caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Restoration of soil organic carbon (SOC) in agricultural soils can not only improve soil quality but also influence climate change and agronomic productivity. With about half of its land area under agricultural use, China exhibits vast potential for carbon (C) sequestration that needs to be researched. Chinese cropland has experienced SOC change over the past century. The study of SOC dynamics under different bioclimatic conditions and cropping systems can help us to better understand this historical change, current status, the impacts of bioclimatic conditions on SOC and future trends. We used a simulation based on historical statistical data to analyze the C balance of Chinese croplands during the 1980s and 1990s, taking into account soil, climate and agricultural management. Nationwide, 77.6% of the national arable land is considered to be in good condition. Appropriate farm management practices should be adopted to improve the poor C balance of the remaining 22.4% of cropland to promote C sequestration
Recurrence Relations for Strongly q-Log-Convex Polynomials
We consider a class of strongly q-log-convex polynomials based on a
triangular recurrence relation with linear coefficients, and we show that the
Bell polynomials, the Bessel polynomials, the Ramanujan polynomials and the
Dowling polynomials are strongly q-log-convex. We also prove that the Bessel
transformation preserves log-convexity.Comment: 15 page
Modulation of Negative Index Metamaterials in the Near-IR Range
Optical modulation of the effective refractive properties of a "fishnet"
metamaterial with a Ag/Si/Ag heterostructure is demonstrated in the near-IR
range and the associated fast dynamics of negative refractive index is studied
by pump-probe method. Photo excitation of the amorphous Si layer at visible
wavelength and corresponding modification of its optical parameters is found to
be responsible for the observed modulation of negative refractive index in

The robustness of interdependent clustered networks
It was recently found that cascading failures can cause the abrupt breakdown
of a system of interdependent networks. Using the percolation method developed
for single clustered networks by Newman [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 103}, 058701
(2009)], we develop an analytical method for studying how clustering within the
networks of a system of interdependent networks affects the system's
robustness. We find that clustering significantly increases the vulnerability
of the system, which is represented by the increased value of the percolation

WTO accession, the changing competitiveness of foreign-financed firms and regional development in Guangdong of southern China
This paper investigates the changing competitiveness of foreign-financed manufacturing firms and its implications for regional development in Guangdong province of southern China in the run-up to World Trade Organization (WTO) accession. It is argued that transnational corporations (TNCs) and some competitive, large-scale, locally-funded firms in Guangdong will triumph after WTO accession. The crowding-out process of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Guangdong will be accelerated in the near future, as they are competing directly with TNCs, and as their competitive advantages are diminishing, due to bureaucratic red tape and the rigorous enforcement of new government policies. Due to close business linkages with local privately-funded firms, the competitiveness and vitality of foreign-financed enterprises will have profound long term effects on the economic development of Guangdong, before and after WTO accession
Solvable Kinetic Gaussian Model in External Field
In this paper, the single-spin transition dynamics is used to investigate the
kinetic Gaussian model in a periodic external field. We first derive the
fundamental dynamic equations, and then treat an isotropic d-dimensional
hypercubic lattice Gaussian spin system with Fourier's transformation method.
We obtain exactly the local magnetization and the equal-time pair correlation
function. The critical characteristics of the dynamical, the complex
susceptibility, and the dynamical response are discussed. The results show that
the time evolution of the dynamical quantities and the dynamical responses of
the system strongly depend on the frequency and the wave vector of the external

A Multifractal Analysis of Asian Foreign Exchange Markets
We analyze the multifractal spectra of daily foreign exchange rates for
Japan, Hong-Kong, Korea, and Thailand with respect to the United States Dollar
from 1991 to 2005. We find that the return time series show multifractal
spectrum features for all four cases. To observe the effect of the Asian
currency crisis, we also estimate the multifractal spectra of limited series
before and after the crisis. We find that the Korean and Thai foreign exchange
markets experienced a significant increase in multifractality compared to
Hong-Kong and Japan. We also show that the multifractality is stronge related
to the presence of high values of returns in the series
Universal relations in the finite-size correction terms of two-dimensional Ising models
Quite recently, Izmailian and Hu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5160 (2001)] studied
the finite-size correction terms for the free energy per spin and the inverse
correlation length of the critical two-dimensional Ising model. They obtained
the universal amplitude ratio for the coefficients of two series. In this study
we give a simple derivation of this universal relation; we do not use an
explicit form of series expansion. Moreover, we show that the Izmailian and
Hu's relation is reduced to a simple and exact relation between the free energy
and the correlation length. This equation holds at any temperature and has the
