    Implicit person theories and change in teacher evaluation: A longitudinal field study

    Adopting a longitudinal field study, this paper investigates whether entity theorists (students who believe human attributes are fixed) are less likely than incremental theorists (students who believe human attributes are malleable) to change their evaluations of a teacher in accordance with his behavioral changes. An instructor exhibited some forgetful behaviors in the first half of a course, and ceased doing so in the second half. Consistent with our hypothesis, incremental theorists adjusted their perceptions of the instructor. They rated him as less forgetful accordingly at the end of the course than at the middle. Entity theorists, however, did not show this change. With improved ecological validity, this study extends previous laboratory studies to teacher evaluation. © 2010 Copyright the Authors.     Prognostic factors in severe exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B

    Forty-seven patients with severe hepatitis B exacerbation were compared with patients who had mild exacerbation (n = 96) or no exacerbation (n = 96). Seventeen patients (36.2%) died or underwent liver transplantation. Preexisting cirrhosis and a prothrombin time (PT) of >30 s were associated with adverse outcome in 60.9% and 87.5% of patients, respectively. The rate of adverse outcome increased to 92.3% when albumin levels of ≤35 g/L and bilirubin levels of >200 μM were present. Other factors associated with adverse outcomes included peak bilirubin level, peak PT, time to reach peak PT, and the presence of encephalopathy and/or ascites. There was no difference in the frequency of precore mutations in patients with severe or mild exacerbation or without exacerbation. A significantly lower prevalence of core promoter mutants was found in patients with severe exacerbation (50%), compared with those who had mild exacerbation (81.3%; P = .004). Patients with severe exacerbation of hepatitis B with poor prognostic factors should be considered for early liver transplantation.published_or_final_versio

    Intrusion detection routers: Design, implementation and evaluation using an experimental testbed

    In this paper, we present the design, the implementation details, and the evaluation results of an intrusion detection and defense system for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. The evaluation is conducted using an experimental testbed. The system, known as intrusion detection router (IDR), is deployed on network routers to perform online detection on any DDoS attack event, and then react with defense mechanisms to mitigate the attack. The testbed is built up by a cluster of sufficient number of Linux machines to mimic a portion of the Internet. Using the testbed, we conduct real experiments to evaluate the IDR system and demonstrate that IDR is effective in protecting the network from various DDoS attacks. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    The prognostic value of the hypoxia markers CA IX and GLUT 1 and the cytokines VEGF and IL 6 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treated by radiotherapy ± chemotherapy

    BACKGROUND: Several parameters of the tumor microenvironment, such as hypoxia, inflammation and angiogenesis, play a critical role in tumor aggressiveness and treatment response. A major question remains if these markers can be used to stratify patients to certain treatment protocols. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inter-relationship and the prognostic significance of several biological and clinicopathological parameters in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) treated by radiotherapy ± chemotherapy. METHODS: We used two subgroups of a retrospective series for which CT-determined tumoral perfusion correlated with local control. In the first subgroup (n = 67), immunohistochemistry for carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX) and glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) was performed on the pretreatment tumor biopsy. In the second subgroup (n = 34), enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine pretreatment levels of the cytokines vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in serum. Correlation was investigated between tumoral perfusion and each of these biological markers, as well as between the markers mutually. The prognostic value of these microenvironmental parameters was also evaluated. RESULTS: For CA IX and GLUT-1, the combined assessment of patients with both markers expressed above the median showed an independent correlation with local control (p = 0.02) and disease-free survival (p = 0.04) with a trend for regional control (p = 0.06). In the second subgroup, IL-6 pretreatment serum level above the median was the only independent predictor of local control (p = 0.009), disease-free survival (p = 0.02) and overall survival (p = 0.005). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, we are the first to report a link in HNSCC between IL-6 pretreatment serum levels and radioresistance in vivo. This link is supported by the strong prognostic association of pretreatment IL-6 with local control, known to be the most important parameter to judge radiotherapy responses. Furthermore, the combined assessment of CA IX and GLUT-1 correlated independently with prognosis. This is a valuable indication that a combined approach is important in the investigation of prognostic markers

    Hedgehog/notch-induced premature gliogenesis represents a new disease mechanism for Hirschsprung disease in mice and humans

    Hirschsprung (HSCR) disease is a complex genetic disorder attributed to a failure of the enteric neural crest cells (ENCCs) to form ganglia in the hindgut. Hedgehog and Notch are implicated in mediating proliferation and differentiation of ENCCs. Nevertheless, how these signaling molecules may interact to mediate gut colonization by ENCCs and contribute to a primary etiology for HSCR are not known. Here, we report our pathway- based epistasis analysis of data generated by a genome-wide association study on HSCR disease, which indicates that specific genotype constellations of Patched (PTCH1) (which encodes a receptor for Hedgehog) and delta-like 3 (DLL3) (which encodes a receptor for Notch) SNPs confer higher risk to HSCR. Importantly, deletion of Ptch1 in mouse ENCCs induced robust Dll1 expression and activation of the Notch pathway, leading to premature gliogenesis and reduction of ENCC progenitors in mutant bowels. Dll1 integrated Hedgehog and Notch pathways to coordinate neuronal and glial cell differentiation during enteric nervous system development. In addition, Hedgehog-mediated gliogenesis was found to be highly conserved, such that Hedgehog was consistently able to promote gliogenesis of human neural crest-related precursors. Collectively, we defined PTCH1 and DLL3 as HSCR susceptibility genes and suggest that Hedgehog/Notch-induced premature gliogenesis may represent a new disease mechanism for HSCR.published_or_final_versio

    The Isotope Effect in d-Wave Superconductors

    Based on recently proposed anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuation exchange models for dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}-superconductors, we show that coupling to harmonic phonons {\it{cannot}} account for the observed isotope effect in the cuprate high-TcT_c materials, whereas coupling to strongly anharmonic multiple-well lattice tunneling modes {\it{can}}. Our results thus point towards a strongly enhanced {\it{effective}} electron-phonon coupling and a possible break-down of Migdal-Eliashberg theory in the cuprates.Comment: 12 pages + 2 figures, Postscript files, all uuencoded Phys.
