Antimyeloperoxidase antibody in Chinese patients in Hong Kong: a five-year review
An analysis was made of 51 Chinese patients who tested positive for antimyeloperoxidase antibody (anti-MPO) in the five-year period from 1989 to 1993 in Hong Kong. Nineteen could be clearly classified as having an identifiable vasculitic illness, while the features of the remainder were suggestive of vasculitic syndromes in most cases. Renal disease was present in 84% of all cases and was the commonest manifestation, followed by pulmonary diseases. Acute or acute-on-chronic renal failure developed in 20 patients (39%). Of those who had renal biopsy performed, over half had histologic evidence of crescentic glomerulonephritis. Anti-MPO associated disease carried a grave prognosis with significant morbidity and mortality. Steroid and immunosuppressive therapy was given to most of the patients and in those who responded to immunosuppressive therapy, anti-MPO was a useful marker for monitoring disease activity. Twenty patients died, either of complications or as a result of disease activity.published_or_final_versio
Fermion correlators in non-abelian holographic superconductors
We consider fermion correlators in non-abelian holographic superconductors.
The spectral function of the fermions exhibits several interesting features
such as support in displaced Dirac cones and an asymmetric distribution of
normal modes. These features are compared to similar ones observed in angle
resolved photoemission experiments on high T_c superconductors. Along the way
we elucidate some properties of p-wave superconductors in AdS_4 and discuss the

Holographic Superconductor/Insulator Transition at Zero Temperature
We analyze the five-dimensional AdS gravity coupled to a gauge field and a
charged scalar field. Under a Scherk-Schwarz compactification, we show that the
system undergoes a superconductor/insulator transition at zero temperature in
2+1 dimensions as we change the chemical potential. By taking into account a
confinement/deconfinement transition, the phase diagram turns out to have a
rich structure. We will observe that it has a similarity with the RVB
(resonating valence bond) approach to high-Tc superconductors via an emergent

Awake chronic mouse model of targeted pial vessel occlusion via photothrombosis
Animal models of stroke are used extensively to study the mechanisms involved in the acute and chronic phases of recovery following stroke. A translatable animal model that closely mimics the mechanisms of a human stroke is essential in understanding recovery processes as well as developing therapies that improve functional outcomes. We describe a photothrombosis stroke model that is capable of targeting a single distal pial branch of the middle cerebral artery with minimal damage to the surrounding parenchyma in awake head-fixed mice. Mice are implanted with chronic cranial windows above one hemisphere of the brain that allow optical access to study recovery mechanisms for over a month following occlusion. Additionally, we study the effect of laser spot size used for occlusion and demonstrate that a spot size with small axial and lateral resolution has the advantage of minimizing unwanted photodamage while still monitoring macroscopic changes to cerebral blood flow during photothrombosis. We show that temporally guiding illumination using real-time feedback of blood flow dynamics also minimized unwanted photodamage to the vascular network. Monopoles and Holography
We present a holographic theory in AdS_4 whose zero temperature ground state
develops a crystal structure, spontaneously breaking translational symmetry.
The crystal is induced by a background magnetic field, but requires no chemical
potential. This lattice arises from the existence of 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole
solitons in the bulk which condense to form a classical object known as a
monopole wall. In the infra-red, the magnetic field is screened and there is an
