The influence of Brazilian soils properties in Americium sorption

    No full text
Although some radioecological studies have been accomplished in Brazilian soils supplying useful information to optimization of emergency planning actions in rural areas and to the management of soils contaminated by 137Cs, 60Co and 90Sr, few studies were made with transuranic elements in tropical agricultural areas. The different scenarios found in Brazilian agricultural environments enhance the importance of studying the biogeochemical behavior of radionuclides in representative soils. The objective of this work was to determine the mobility of 241Am in 3 different Brazilian agricultural soils evaluating migration with depth and Kd values for 241Am and the effect of organic amendments on this behavior. A strong effect of organic amendments on mobility of americium could be observed. The values of Kd obtained in all studied tropical soils were however smaller than those found in European soils and from those recommended by IAEA to be used as default values in the absence of regional data. This result reinforces the vulnerability of some tropical soils to a contamination, emphasizing the need to use of regional values

The clinical safety and efficacy of sirolimus plus reduced-dose tacrolimus was evaluated in de novo renal allograft recipients enrolled in a comparative, open-label study. Methods. One hundred twenty-eight renal allograft recipients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive reduced-dose tacrolimus plus sirolimus (rTAC) or standard-dose tacrolimus and sirolimus (sTAC) for 6 months. The primary efficacy endpoint was calculated creatinine clearance values at 6 months. Results. Demographic variables were similar between groups. At 6 months, mean ( standard deviation) calculated creatinine clearance was significantly improved in the rTAC group (63.8 vs 52.7 mL/min, P ¼ .005), although mean serum creatinine values were not significantly different. Patient survival (95.2% and 96.9%) and graft survival (93.7% and 98.5%) were similar between the rTAC and sTAC groups, respectively. Acute rejection rates were 17.5% with rTAC and 7.7% with sTAC (P ¼ .095). Conclusions. The rTAC regimen provided effective immunosuppression and was associated with improved creatinine clearance. Adequate immunosuppressant exposure must be achieved in the early postoperative period to minimize the risk of acute rejection

Eficácia das lactonas macrocíclicas sistêmicas (ivermectina e moxidectina) na terapia da demodicidose canina generalizada Efficacy of systemics macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin and moxidectin) for the treatment of generalized canine demodicosis

Ambas as lactonas macrocíclicas mostraram-se eficazes: ivermectina 89,7% e moxidectina 87%.<br>The efficacy of ivermectin and moxidectin for treatment of generalized canine demodicosis, was evaluated to detect the eventual occurrence of side effects caused by the use of these drugs, and to follow the treated dogs for 12 months after obtaining parasitologic cure. Of 63 dogs, 59% were females, 76% were defined as purebred and 67% had short hair. Ivermectin (0.6mg/kg/daily) was orally administered to 31 dogs and moxidectin (0.5mg/kg/every 72 hours) to 32 dogs. The average number of days to obtain the first negative skin scraping results and the parasitologic cure were, respectively, 90 and 130 days for ivermectin, and 108 and 147 days for moxidectin. Ivermectin caused fewer side effects (16.1%) than moxidectin (37.5%) (P<0.05). The percentages of relapse were, respectively, 10.3% and 13.0% when ivermectin and moxidectin were administered. No difference between protocols of therapy was found for percentage of relapse (P>0.67) and efficacy (P>0.61). Both drugs were effective and safe to treat generalized canine demodicosis: ivermectin 89.7% and moxidectin 87.0%
