Ten moss species - Philonotis turneriana (Schwaegr.) Mitt., Fissidens javanicus Dozy & Molk., Lopidium nazeense (Ther.) Broth., Himatocladium cyclophyllum (C. Muell.) Fleisch., Homaliodendron exigiuum (Bosch & Lac.) Fleisch., Homaliodendron microdendron (Mont.) Fleisch., Homaliodendron scapellifolium (Mitt.) Fleisch., Pinnatella anacamptolepis (C.Muell.) Broth., Calyptothecium wrightii (Mitt.) Fleisch. and Haplocladium angustifolium (Hampe & C. Muell.) Broth. are reported new to Hong Kong. Among them, four are new to Guangdong Province of China. Broth. are reported new to Hong Kong. Among them, seven are new to Guangdong Province of China
A dual colour dual fusion fluorescence in situ hybridisation study on the genesis of complex variant translocations in chronic myelogenous leukaemia
Complex variant 9;22 translocations occur in a significant minority of chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) patients. Different mechanisms of their formation have been described. We report dual colour dual fusion fluorescence in situ hybridisation data in 12 Chinese CML patients with complex translocations. Three previously reported breakpoint hotspots in a third partner chromosome (14q32, 17q25, 1q2l) were observed. In 10/12 (83.3%) patients, the abnormality occurred as a single step 3-break event. Only a single abnormal clone harbouring the complex translocation was seen in this group. The remaining 2 cases in the chronic phase showed a 4-break mechanism (2/12,16.7%). Deletion of 5' ABL at der(9) was not observed in any of the 12 patients, however, the loss of 3' BCR was observed in 1 patient (1/12, 8.3%). Together with previous findings, these data suggest that these variant translocations occur more often as a 3-break single-step process with no reciprocal ABL-BCR fusion. On the other hand, a 4-break event is also regularly seen during the initial stages of leukaemogenesis, which likely predisposes to der(9) deletion. The observed difference in rates of der(9) deletion reported in a series of CML patients with variant translocations may be related to a difference in rates of a 4-break event.published_or_final_versio
Synergistic effect of nogo-neutralizing antibody IN-1 and ciliary neurotrophic factor on axonal regeneration in adult rodent visual systems
The presence of Nogo axon regeneration inhibitory molecules in the central nervous system (CNS) and the counteracting effect of IN-1 antibodies have been widely reported. In this study, we examined the effect of IN-1-producing hybridoma cells on axon regeneration in adult rodent retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) after various types of optic nerve (ON) injury, evaluating therein whether ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) potentiated the effect of IN-1. We found that application of IN-1 alone failed to enhance regeneration of intracranially or intraorbitally transected RGC axons in a peripheral nerve (PN) graft. IN-1 hybridoma cells also failed to significantly promote intraorbitally crushed ON axons to reenter the distal part of the ON. However, a combined application of IN-1 and CNTF had a synergistic effect in both intracranial PN and intraorbital ON crush paradigms. This study suggests that the action of IN-1 antibodies in promoting axon regeneration in the CNS could be more effective when coupled with other appropriate factors.published_or_final_versio

A Markov chain model for studying suicide dynamics: an illustration of the Rose theorem
Background: High-risk strategies would only have a modest effect on suicide prevention within a population. It is best to incorporate both high-risk and population-based strategies to prevent suicide. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of suicide prevention between high-risk and population-based strategies. Methods: A Markov chain illness and death model is proposed to determine suicide dynamic in a population and examine its effectiveness for reducing the number of suicides by modifying certain parameters of the model. Assuming a population with replacement, the suicide risk of the population was estimated by determining the final state of the Markov model. Results: The model shows that targeting the whole population for suicide prevention is more effective than reducing risk in the high-risk tail of the distribution of psychological distress (i.e. the mentally ill). Conclusions: The results of this model reinforce the essence of the Rose theorem that lowering the suicidal risk in the population at large may be more effective than reducing the high risk in a small population
Combined effect of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and LINGO-1 fusion protein on long-term survival of retinal ganglion cells in chronic glaucoma
Glaucoma is a progressive neuropathy characterized by loss of vision as a result of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death. There are no effective neuroprotectants to treat this disorder. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is well known to transiently delay RGC death in ocular hypertensive eyes. The CNS-specific leucine-rich repeat protein LINGO-1 contributes to the negative regulation to some trophic pathways. We thereby examined whether BDNF combined with LINGO-1 antagonists can promote long-term RGC survival after ocular hypertension. In this study, intraocular pressure was elevated in adult rats using an argon laser to photocoagulate the episcleral and limbal veins. BDNF alone shows slight neuroprotection to RGCs after a long-term progress of 4 weeks following the induction of ocular hypertension. However, combination of BDNF and LINGO-1-Fc prevents RGC death in the same condition. We further identified that (1) LINGO-1 was co-expressed with BDNF receptor, TrkB in the RGCs, and (2) BDNF combined with LINGO-1-Fc activated more TrkB in the injured retina compared to BDNF alone. These results indicate that the combination of BDNF with LINGO-1 antagonist can provide long-term protection for RGCs in a chronic ocular hypertension model. TrkB may be the predominant mediator of this neuroprotection. © 2009 IBRO.postprin
Common association of haemolytic uraemic syndrome with invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae infection in five Chinese paediatric patients
Haemolytic uraemic syndrome is an important cause of acute renal impairment in childhood. We review the incidence, and clinical and laboratory features of haemolytic uraemic syndrome in a Chinese population. Five patients were identified from 2006 to 2008. All patients were young children with associated invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae pulmonary infection. Serotypes 3, 14, and 19A were confirmed in four patients. The classical post-diarrhoeal form associated with Escherichia coli (O157:H7) infection was not seen. One patient died of acute respiratory failure. Streptococcus pneumoniae infection, as an associated condition in haemolytic uraemic syndrome, is important and relatively common in Chinese patients, especially among children. The acute clinical picture is similar to that reported in the western literature, except for an uncommon association with meningitis. The medium-term renal outcome of the Chinese population appears to be more favourable than the Caucasians. Widespread vaccination against Streptococcus pneumoniae may have resulted in changes in bacterial epidemiology and clinicians should be continuously aware of this severe disease. The use of washed blood components for transfusion in the acute stage requires further study.published_or_final_versio

Enhanced survival and regeneration of axotomized retinal ganglion cells by a mixture of herbal extracts
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Panax quinquefolius L. extract (PQE), Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), and Hypericum perforatum extract (HPE), in combination or alone, on the survival and regeneration of axotomized retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in an optic nerve transection model in adult hamsters. Unilateral transection of the optic nerve was performed to evaluate the effects of herbal extracts on the survival of axotomized RGCs. Effects of the herbal extracts on axonal regeneration of axotomized RGCs, on the other hand, were studied by attaching a peripheral nerve graft onto the transected ocular stump to induce regeneration. Operated animals received daily oral administration of vehicle or herbal extracts (PQE, GBE, and HPE), alone or in combination, for 7 and 21 days, respectively, in the survival and regeneration experiments. Surviving and regenerating RGCs were retrogradely labeled with Fluoro-Gold. The eyes were then enucleated and the retinas were flat-mounted for the counting of the labeled RGCs. Treatment with PQE, GBE and HPE alone failed to offer neuroprotection to injured RGCs. However, treatment with Menta-FX, a mixture of PQE, GBE, and HPE, significantly augmented RGC survival 7 days postaxotomy. Treatment with Menta-FX also induced a significant (87%) increase in the number of regenerating RGCs 21 days after optic nerve transection. This study demonstrates that herbs can act as a potential neuroprotective agent for damaged RGCs. It also suggests that the therapeutic value of herbal remedies can be maximized by the use of mixtures of appropriate herbs.published_or_final_versio
