Using molecular data for epidemiological inference: assessing the prevalence of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense in Tsetse in Serengeti, Tanzania
Background: Measuring the prevalence of transmissible Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense in tsetse populations is essential for understanding transmission dynamics, assessing human disease risk and monitoring spatio-temporal trends and the impact of control interventions. Although an important epidemiological variable, identifying flies which carry transmissible infections is difficult, with challenges including low prevalence, presence of other trypanosome species in the same fly, and concurrent detection of immature non-transmissible infections. Diagnostic tests to measure the prevalence of T. b. rhodesiense in tsetse are applied and interpreted inconsistently, and discrepancies between studies suggest this value is not consistently estimated even to within an order of magnitude.
Methodology/Principal Findings: Three approaches were used to estimate the prevalence of transmissible Trypanosoma brucei s.l. and T. b. rhodesiense in Glossina swynnertoni and G. pallidipes in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania: (i) dissection/microscopy; (ii) PCR on infected tsetse midguts; and (iii) inference from a mathematical model. Using dissection/microscopy the prevalence of transmissible T. brucei s.l. was 0% (95% CI 0–0.085) for G. swynnertoni and 0% (0–0.18) G. pallidipes; using PCR the prevalence of transmissible T. b. rhodesiense was 0.010% (0–0.054) and 0.0089% (0–0.059) respectively, and by model inference 0.0064% and 0.00085% respectively.
Conclusions/Significance: The zero prevalence result by dissection/microscopy (likely really greater than zero given the results of other approaches) is not unusual by this technique, often ascribed to poor sensitivity. The application of additional techniques confirmed the very low prevalence of T. brucei suggesting the zero prevalence result was attributable to insufficient sample size (despite examination of 6000 tsetse). Given the prohibitively high sample sizes required to obtain meaningful results by dissection/microscopy, PCR-based approaches offer the current best option for assessing trypanosome prevalence in tsetse but inconsistencies in relating PCR results to transmissibility highlight the need for a consensus approach to generate meaningful and comparable data

Carbonyl reductase as a significant predictor of survival and lymph node metastasis in epithelial ovarian cancer
We have recently reported a novel function for carbonyl reductase (CR), namely, its ability to modulate the metastatic potential of malignant mouse cells. Because there are currently no data addressing a similar function for CR in human cancers, the aim of this study was to assess a correlation between survival and metastasis, and CR level in epithelial ovarian cancer. Using anti-CR antibody, immunohistochemical staining was performed on 73 epithelial ovarian cancers, 13 borderline malignant tumours, and 25 benign ovarian tumours for a total of 111 specimens. The combined rate for strongly and weakly positive reactions for CR was 32.0% for benign tumours, 38.5% for borderline malignant tumours, and 61.6% for ovarian cancers. The CR-positive rate was 35.7% (weakly positive alone) for ovarian cancers with retroperitoneal lymph node (RLN) metastasis and 67.8% for those without RLN metastasis (P< 0.05). The 5-year survival rate was 62.7% for the patients with CR-negative cancer and 86.1% for those with CR-positive cancer (P< 0.05). A neo-institutional perspective on ethical decision-making
Drawing on neo-institutional theory, this study aims to discern the poorly understood ethical challenges confronted by senior executives in Indian multinational corporations and identify the strategies that they utilize to overcome them. We conducted in-depth interviews with 40 senior executives in Indian multinational corporations to illustrate these challenges and strategies. By embedding our research in contextually relevant characteristics that embody the Indian environment, we identify several institutional- and managerial-level challenges faced by executives. The institutional-level challenges are interpreted as regulative, normative and cognitive shortcomings. We recommend a concerted effort at the institutional and managerial levels by identifying relevant strategies for ethical decision-making. Moreover, we proffer a multi-level model of ethical decision-making and discuss our theoretical contributions and practical implications
Array-CGH and breast cancer
The introduction of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) in 1992 opened new avenues in genomic investigation; in particular, it advanced analysis of solid tumours, including breast cancer, because it obviated the need to culture cells before their chromosomes could be analyzed. The current generation of CGH analysis uses ordered arrays of genomic DNA sequences and is therefore referred to as array-CGH or matrix-CGH. It was introduced in 1998, and further increased the potential of CGH to provide insight into the fundamental processes of chromosomal instability and cancer. This review provides a critical evaluation of the data published on array-CGH and breast cancer, and discusses some of its expected future value and developments
A novel methodology for perception-based portfolio management
Selecting and investing in stock market with right proportions is one of the major challenges. Majority of the investors end up losing their invested equity capital due to uncertainty in the market. The present study provides a novel framework for novice investors to construct portfolio based on multicriteria decision making techniques under fuzzy environment. The scores obtained from these techniques were used to introduce two non-dimensional parameters for categorization of risky and non-risky assets. Three perceptions portfolios were constructed based on the proposed non-dimensional parameters along with fractional lion clustering algorithm. In order to demonstrate the proposed framework, an illustrative application is included in equity portfolio selection. The returns and risks of these perception based portfolios are compared to major Index funds for validating the efficiency and are found to overpower the Index funds with significant margins by maintaining the risk comparable to Index funds. Further, Markowitz based efficient frontier is plotted for better understanding of optimal returns and risk for perception based investment
