Accretion Disks Around Black Holes: Twenty Five Years Later
We study the progress of the theory of accretion disks around black holes in
last twenty five years and explain why advective disks are the best bet in
explaining varied stationary and non-stationary observations from black hole
candidates. We show also that the recently proposed advection dominated flows
are incorrect.Comment: 30 Latex pages including figures. Kluwer Style files included.

Robust adaptive terminal sliding mode control for dynamic positioning of a semi-submersible offshore platform
In this paper, a robust adaptive terminal sliding mode controller is proposed for dynamic positioning of a semi-submersible offshore platform. First, a state feedback controller is designed to stabilize the nominal system. Then a robust adaptive terminal sliding mode compensator is developed to eliminate the effects of uncertain dynamics and disturbances. It is shown, using Lyapunov methods, that the tracking error is driven to zero in finite time using the proposed control. The efficacy of the control algorithm is validated using simulation studies; it is shown that recent developments in the domain of robust exact differentiation are very helpful for controller implementation
A cross-sectional survey of water and clean faces in trachoma endemic communities in Tanzania

Abstract

Background

Face washing is important to interrupt the transmission of trachoma, the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. We aimed to assess the household and personal factors that affected water use and face washing practices in Kongwa, Tanzania.

Methods

We conducted a household water use survey in 173 households (329 children) in January, 2010. Self reported data on water use practices, observed water in the household, and observed clean faces in children were collected. Contingency table analyses and logistic regression analyses were used to measure associations between unclean faces and risk factors.

Results

We found that women are recognized as primary decision makers on water use in a household, and respondents who reported laziness as a reason that others do not wash children's faces were significantly more likely to have children with clean faces. Washing was reported as a priority for water use in most households. Sixty four percent (95% Confidence Interval = 59%-70%) of children had clean faces.

Conclusions

Attitudes toward face washing and household water use appear to have changed dramatically from 20 years ago when clean faces were rare and men made decisions on water use in households. The sources of these attitudinal changes are not clear, but are positive changes that will assist the trachoma control program in strengthening its hygiene efforts.</p
Accretion Disc Theory: From the Standard Model Until Advection
Accretion disc theory was first developed as a theory with the local heat
balance, where the whole energy produced by a viscous heating was emitted to
the sides of the disc. One of the most important new invention of this theory
was a phenomenological treatment of the turbulent viscosity, known as ''alpha''
prescription, when the (r) component of the stress tensor was
approximated by ( P) with a unknown constant . This
prescription played the role in the accretion disc theory as well important as
the mixing-length theory of convection for stellar evolution. Sources of
turbulence in the accretion disc are discussed, including nonlinear
hydrodynamical turbulence, convection and magnetic field role. In parallel to
the optically thick geometrically thin accretion disc models, a new branch of
the optically thin accretion disc models was discovered, with a larger
thickness for the same total luminosity. The choice between these solutions
should be done of the base of a stability analysis. The ideas underlying the
necessity to include advection into the accretion disc theory are presented and
first models with advection are reviewed. The present status of the solution
for a low-luminous optically thin accretion disc model with advection is
discussed and the limits for an advection dominated accretion flows (ADAF)
imposed by the presence of magnetic field are analysed.Comment: Roceeding of the Int. Workshop "Observational Evidence for Black

Improved Cell Survival and Paracrine Capacity of Human Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Promote Therapeutic Potential for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.
Although transplantation of adult bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) holds promise in the treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), the poor survival and differentiation potential of adult BM-MSCs have limited their therapeutic efficiency. Here, we compared the therapeutic efficacy of human embryonic stem cell-derived MSCs (hESC-MSCs) with adult BM-MSCs for the treatment of PAH in an animal model. One week following monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PAH, mice were randomly assigned to receive phosphate-buffered saline (MCT group); 3.0×106 human BM-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs group) or 3.0 ×106 hESC-derived MSCs (hESC-MSCs group) via tail vein injection. At 3 weeks posttransplantation, the right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), degree of RV hypertrophy, and medial wall thickening of pulmonary arteries were lower=, and pulmonary capillary density was higher in the hESC-MSC group as compared with BM-MSC and MCT groups (all p < 0.05). At 1 week posttransplantation, the number of engrafted MSCs in the lungs was found significantly higher in the hESC-MSC group than in the BM-MSC group (all p < 0.01). At 3 weeks posttransplantation, implanted BM-MSCs were undetectable whereas hESC-MSCs were not only engrafted in injured pulmonary arteries but had also undergone endothelial differentiation. In addition, protein profiling of hESC-MSC- and BM-MSC-conditioned medium revealed a differential paracrine capacity. Classification of these factors into bioprocesses revealed that secreted factors from hESC-MSCs were preferentially involved in early embryonic development and tissue differentiation, especially blood vessel morphogenesis. We concluded that improved cell survival and paracrine capacity of hESC-MSCs provide better therapeutic efficacy than BM-MSCs in the treatment for PAH. © 2012 Cognizant Comm. Physiology and cell biology of acupuncture observed in calcium signaling activated by acoustic shear wave
This article presents a novel model of acupuncture physiology based on cellular calcium activation by an acoustic shear wave (ASW) generated by the mechanical movement of the needle. An acupuncture needle was driven by a piezoelectric transducer at 100 Hz or below, and the ASW in human calf was imaged by magnetic resonance elastography. At the cell level, the ASW activated intracellular Ca 2+ transients and oscillations in fibroblasts and endothelial, ventricular myocytes and neuronal PC-12 cells along with frequency-amplitude tuning and memory capabilities. Monitoring in vivo mammalian experiments with ASW, enhancement of endorphin in blood plasma and blocking by Gd 3+ were observed; and increased Ca 2+ fluorescence in mouse hind leg muscle was imaged by two-photon microscopy. In contrast with traditional acupuncture models, the signal source is derived from the total acoustic energy. ASW signaling makes use of the anisotropy of elasticity of tissues as its waveguides for transmission and that cell activation is not based on the nervous system. © 2011 The Author(s).published_or_final_versionSpringer Open Choice, 21 Feb 201
Yang-Mills instantons and dyons on homogeneous G_2-manifolds
We consider Lie G-valued Yang-Mills fields on the space R x G/H, where G/H is
a compact nearly K"ahler six-dimensional homogeneous space, and the manifold R
x G/H carries a G_2-structure. After imposing a general G-invariance condition,
Yang-Mills theory with torsion on R x G/H is reduced to Newtonian mechanics of
a particle moving in R^6, R^4 or R^2 under the influence of an inverted
double-well-type potential for the cases G/H = SU(3)/U(1)xU(1),
Sp(2)/Sp(1)xU(1) or G_2/SU(3), respectively. We analyze all critical points and
present analytical and numerical kink- and bounce-type solutions, which yield
G-invariant instanton configurations on those cosets. Periodic solutions on S^1
x G/H and dyons on iR x G/H are also given.Comment: 1+26 pages, 14 figures, 6 miniplot
Aharonov-Bohm interference in topological insulator nanoribbons
Topological insulators represent novel phases of quantum matter with an
insulating bulk gap and gapless edges or surface states. The two-dimensional
topological insulator phase was predicted in HgTe quantum wells and confirmed
by transport measurements. Recently, Bi2Se3 and related materials have been
proposed as three-dimensional topological insulators with a single Dirac cone
on the surface and verified by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy
experiments. Here, we show unambiguous transport evidence of topological
surface states through periodic quantum interference effects in layered
single-crystalline Bi2Se3 nanoribbons. Pronounced Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in
the magnetoresistance clearly demonstrate the coverage of two-dimensional
electrons on the entire surface, as expected from the topological nature of the
surface states. The dominance of the primary h/e oscillation and its
temperature dependence demonstrate the robustness of these electronic states.
Our results suggest that topological insulator nanoribbons afford novel
promising materials for future spintronic devices at room temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, RevTex forma
Aberrant p15 gene promoter methylation in therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukaemia: Clinicopathological and karyotypic associations
Seventeen patients with therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome/acute myeloid leukaemia (t-MDS/AML) were examined for aberrant p15 gene methylation by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. Ten patients (58%) showed p15 methylation, which was significantly related to monosomy/deletion of chromosome 7q, but not to antecedent chemotherapy, blast count, leukaemic evolution or survival. In three of six patients with marrow samples obtained prior to the diagnosis of t-MDS/AML, p15 methylation predated disease development by up to 2 years. Bone marrow transplantation led to the disappearance of p15 methylation in one patient. These results showed that p15 methylation was an early event in the evolution of some t-MDS/AML patients.link_to_OA_fulltex
