When is genetic testing useful in patients suspected to have inherited cardiac arrhythmias?
PURPOSE OF REVIEW:
In this article, we will review the appropriate use of genetic testing in those patients suspected to have inherited arrhythmogenic diseases, with specific focus on the indications for testing and the expected probability of positive genotyping.
RECENT FINDINGS:
Important advances have been made in the identification of new genes, associated mutations, and polymorphisms that modulate susceptibility of acquired arrhythmias. We will examine the most recent advances relevant to the rational application of genetic analysis, guided by genotype-phenotype correlations derived from disease and patient-specific evaluation, as well as discussing novel technologies and recently published cost-effectiveness data.
SUMMARY:
Genetic analysis can be performed to identify the molecular substrate in those patients suspected to be affected by an inherited arrhythmogenic disease; however, the clinical usefulness of this information is often not straightforward. We hope to emphasize the concept that there is a significant difference in the impact of genetic testing within the various arrhythmogenic disorders, and the benefit of accessing genetic testing is not the same in all patients. The resultant integration between the expected yield of genetic screening and cost may allow the formation of criteria to prioritize access for those who could derive the most clinical benefit
Infrared stability of ABJ-like theories
We consider marginal deformations of the superconformal ABJM/ABJ models which
preserve N=2 supersymmetry. We determine perturbatively the spectrum of fixed
points and study their infrared stability. We find a closed line of fixed
points which is IR stable. The fixed point corresponding to the ABJM/ABJ models
is stable under marginal deformations which respect the original SU(2)xSU(2)
invariance, while deformations which break this group destabilize the theory
which then flows to a less symmetric fixed point. We discuss the addition of
flavor degrees of freedom. We prove that in general a flavor marginal
superpotential does not destabilize the system in the IR. An exception is
represented by a marginal coupling which mixes matter charged under different
gauge sectors. Finally, we consider the case of relevant deformations which
should drive the system to a strongly coupled IR fixed point recently

From Correlators to Wilson Loops in Chern-Simons Matter Theories
We study n-point correlation functions for chiral primary operators in three
dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter theories. Our analysis is
carried on in N=2 superspace and covers N=2,3 supersymmetric CFT's, the N=6
ABJM and the N=8 BLG models. In the limit where the positions of adjacent
operators become light-like, we find that the one-loop n-point correlator
divided by its tree level expression coincides with a light-like n-polygon
Wilson loop. Remarkably, the result can be simply expressed as a linear
combination of five dimensional two-mass easy boxes. We manage to evaluate the
integrals analytically and find a vanishing result, in agreement with previous
findings for Wilson loops.Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures, JHEP
The Conformal Manifold of Chern-Simons Matter Theories
We determine perturbatively the conformal manifold of N=2 Chern-Simons matter
theories with the aim of checking in the three dimensional case the general
prescription based on global symmetry breaking, recently introduced. We discuss
in details few remarkable cases like the N=6 ABJM theory and its less
supersymmetric generalizations with/without flavors. In all cases we find
perfect agreement with the predictions of global symmetry breaking
prescription.Comment: 1+17 pages, 1 figure, references adde

Seroprevalence of Chikungunya Virus after Its Emergence in Brazil.
Chikungunya has had a substantial impact on public health because of the magnitude of its epidemics and its highly debilitating symptoms. We estimated the seroprevalence, proportion of symptomatic cases, and proportion of chronic form of disease after introduction of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in 2 cities in Brazil. We conducted the population-based study through household interviews and serologic surveys during October-December 2015. In Feira de Santana, we conducted a serologic survey of 385 persons; 57.1% were CHIKV-positive. Among them, 32.7% reported symptoms, and 68.1% contracted chronic chikungunya disease. A similar survey in RiachΓ£o do JacuΓpe included 446 persons; 45.7% were CHIKV-positive, 41.2% reported symptoms, and 75.0% contracted the chronic form. Our data confirm intense CHIKV transmission during the continuing epidemic. Chronic pain developed in a high proportion of patients. We recommend training health professionals in management of chronic pain, which will improve the quality of life of chikungunya-affected persons
A geographical population analysis of dental trauma in school-children aged 12 and 15 in the city of Curitiba-Brazil

Abstract

Background

The study presents a geographical analysis of dental trauma in a population of 12 and 15 year-old school-children, in the city of Curitiba, Brazil (n = 1581), using a database obtained in the period 2005-2006. The main focus is to analyze dental trauma using a geographic information system as a tool for integrating social, environmental and epidemiological data.

Methods

Geostatistical analysis of the database and thematic maps were generated showing the distribution of dental trauma cases according to Curitiba's Health Districts and other variables of interest. Dental trauma spatial variation was assessed using a generalized additive model in order to identify and control the individual risk-factors and thus determine whether spatial variation is constant or not throughout the Health Districts and the place of residence of individuals. In addition, an analysis was made of the coverage of dental trauma cases taking the spatial distribution of Curitiba's primary healthcare centres.

Results

The overall prevalence of dental trauma was 37.1%, with 53.1% in males and 46.7% in females. The spatial analysis confirms the hypothesis that there is significant variation in the occurrence of dental trauma, considering the place of residence in the population studied (Monte Carlo test, p = 0,006). Furthermore, 28.7% of cases had no coverage by the primary healthcare centres.

Conclusions

The effect of the place of residence was highly significant in relation to the response variable. The delimitation of areas, as a basis for case density, enables the qualification of geographical territories where actions can be planned based on priority criteria. Promotion, control and rehabilitation actions, applied in regions of higher prevalence of dental trauma, can be more effective and efficient, thus providing healthcare refinement.</p

A Metachronous splenic metastases from esophageal cancer: a case report
The spleen is an infrequent site for metastatic lesions, and solitary splenic metastases from squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus are very rare: only 4 cases have been reported thus far. These lesions are whitish nodules that are macroscopically and radiologically similar to primary splenic lymphomas. We report a case of metachronous splenic metastases from esophageal cancer and multiple splenic abscesses, which developed nine months after apparently curative esophagectomy without adjuvant chemotherapy. The patient underwent splenectomy dissection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy, but liver and skin metastases developed, and the patient died 9 months later
