High temperature limit in static backgrounds
We prove that the hard thermal loop contribution to static thermal amplitudes
can be obtained by setting all the external four-momenta to zero before
performing the Matsubara sums and loop integrals. At the one-loop order we do
an iterative procedure for all the 1PI one-loop diagrams and at the two-loop
order we consider the self-energy. Our approach is sufficiently general to the
extent that it includes theories with any kind of interaction vertices, such as
gravity in the weak field approximation, for space-time dimensions. This
result is valid whenever the external fields are all bosonic.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. To be published in Physical Review
Thermal Effective Lagrangian of Static Gravitational Fields
We compute the effective Lagrangian of static gravitational fields
interacting with thermal fields. Our approach employs the usual imaginary time
formalism as well as the equivalence between the static and space-time
independent external gravitational fields. This allows to obtain a closed form
expression for the thermal effective Lagrangian in space-time dimensions.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Physical Review
Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks in Integrated Crop Livestock
Soil organic matter (SOM) is recognized as an important characteristic of sustainable agricultural systems in the tropics and temperate regions. It is considered an integrated characteristic of physical, chemical and biological soil conditions and has been used as a soil quality index in different land uses and management practices (Lal 2011). Environmental, social, and financial imbalances have occurred, requiring producers to become more efficient. A system of intercropping grain crops with forages can provide enough forage in the dry season to maintain nutritional quality of livestock and even promote weight gain (Castro Filho et al. 1991). An integrated crop-livestock system (ICLS) that includes a crop phase and a pasture phase in rotation has strong potential for sustainable beef and grain crop production (Salton et al. 2011). Perennial pastures can contribute to soil C sequestration. Several studies have shown significant soil organic C accumulation with well-managed grazing of pastures (Maia et al. 2009; Salton et al. 2011). However, there are few studies that compare the efficiency of different grasses to maintain productivity and promote an increase in soil organic C and stocks. We hypothesized that an ICLS with maize cultivated under no-tillage in rotation with grazed pasture (Urochloa P. Beauv. spp. (syn. Brachiaria (Trin.) Griseb. spp.) would result in accumulation of soil organic C and N compared with continuously grazed, degraded pasture or with conventionally tilled monoculture production of maize. Our objective was to evaluate the stocks of soil organic C and N under alternative land uses from the prevailing degraded pasture condition in Sao Paulo state of Brazil

Influence of Cognitive Orientation and Attentional Focus on Pain Perception
Background. Recently, a growing interest has emerged in the role of attention and hypervigilance in the experience of pain. Shifting attention away from pain seems likely to reduce the perception of pain itself. Objectives. The present study has been designed to test the following overall hypotheses: (1) disposition to catastrophize, self-efficacy perceived in pain resistance (task self-efficacy), previous experiences concerning the tolerance of physical pain, and degree of impulsiveness are significant predictors of the decision to abandon a painful test such as the cold pressor test (CPT); (2) the manipulation of the attentive focus (internal or external) can influence the level of perceived pain. Methods. Effects of the manipulation of attentional focus (internal and external) on pain perception and response of trial abandonment were evaluated in a sample of university students (n = 246) subjected to the cold pressor test. Results. A significant effect (p < 0.05) was found through a test–retest comparison on the final level of perceived pain among subjects who had received instruction to externalize the focus of their attention (mixed factorial analysis of variance), but no significance was observed with respect to the decision to abandon the experiment. A general explanatory model of the abandonment behavior demonstrating overall good fit measurements was tested too. Conclusion. The abandonment of tests has been shown to be predicted mainly by catastrophic attitude. Attentive impulsiveness showed a further positive effect on catastrophic attitude. Perceived self-efficacy in the tolerance of pain limited learned helplessness, which in turn positively influenced catastrophizing
