    The Effects of Negative Legacies on the Adjustment of Parentally Bereaved Children and Adolescents

    This is a report of a qualitative analysis of a sample of bereaved families in which one parent died and in which children scored in the clinical range on the Child Behavior Check List. The purpose of this analysis was to learn more about the lives of these children. They were considered to be at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems associated with the death. We discovered that many of these “high risk” children had a continuing bond with the deceased that was primarily negative and troubling for them in contrast to a comparison group of children not at risk from the same study. Five types of legacies, not mutually exclusive, were identified: health related, role related, personal qualities, legacy of blame, and an emotional legacy. Coping behavior on the part of the surviving parent seemed to make a difference in whether or not a legacy was experienced as negative

    Applicability of 100kWe-class of space reactor power systems to NASA manned space station missions

    An assessment is made of a manned space station operating with sufficiently high power demands to require a multihundred kilowatt range electrical power system. The nuclear reactor is a competitor for supplying this power level. Load levels were selected at 150kWe and 300kWe. Interactions among the reactor electrical power system, the manned space station, the space transportation system, and the mission were evaluated. The reactor shield and the conversion equipment were assumed to be in different positions with respect to the station; on board, tethered, and on a free flyer platform. Mission analyses showed that the free flyer concept resulted in unacceptable costs and technical problems. The tethered reactor providing power to an electrolyzer for regenerative fuel cells on the space station, results in a minimum weight shield and can be designed to release the reactor power section so that it moves to a high altitude orbit where the decay period is at least 300 years. Placing the reactor on the station, on a structural boom is an attractive design, but heavier than the long tethered reactor design because of the shield weight for manned activity near the reactor

    Community-based evaluation of the air toxic provisions of title III of the 1990 clean air act amendments : risks, costs and benefits

    Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) are those pollutants that are known or suspected to cause cancer, serious health effects, or adverse environmental effects. People exposed to HAPs at sufficient concentrations and durations may have an increased risk of getting cancer or experiencing other health effects. The 1990 Amendments to the Clean Air Act (CAAA) directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to use technology-based air pollution control measures to significantly reduce emissions of HAPs from major sources of air pollution, followed by a risk-based assessment to address any remaining or residual health risks. This study retrospectively assessed the public health risk posed by 17 major source facilities, located in three counties in New Jersey, in 1990, the year the Clean Air Act was last amended. Air dispersion modeling, based on the physical characteristics and mass emission rates of the source facilities, was used to quantitatively and spatially estimate the community\u27s exposure to RAPs. The estimated exposures were then used to evaluate the public health risk posed by source facilities individually and collectively. The risk results were used to assess what, if any, air pollution controls would be required for the source facilities by Title III of the CAAA. The economic benefits and costs of these pollution controls were also estimated. The results suggest that the public health impact of the emissions was limited to the receptors in close proximity to the source facilities. No cumulative impacts were found in nearby residential neighborhoods even when source facilities were clustered together. The morbidity risks from non-carcinogenic pollutants were all below acceptable thresholds. The mortality risks from carcinogenic pollutants were all within the USEPA acceptable risk range. No source facility posed a cancer risk to the community greater than 1 in one hundred thousand, and only three source facilities presented a cancer risk greater than 1 in one million. The results suggest that the addition of technology-based air pollution controls results in relatively small reductions in community health risk and that the residual risk, after the additional controls, is minimal

    Multidimensional optical fractionation with holographic verification

    The trajectories of colloidal particles driven through a periodic potential energy landscape can become kinetically locked in to directions dictated by the landscape's symmetries. When the landscape is realized with forces exerted by a structured light field, the path a given particle follows has been predicted to depend exquisitely sensitively on such properties as the particle's size and refractive index These predictions, however, have not been tested experimentally. Here, we describe measurements of colloidal silica spheres' transport through arrays of holographic optical traps that use holographic video microscopy to track individual spheres' motions in three dimensions and simultaneously to measure each sphere's radius and refractive index with part-per-thousand resolution. These measurements confirm previously untested predictions for the threshold of kinetically locked-in transport, and demonstrate the ability of optical fractionation to sort colloidal spheres with part-per-thousand resolution on multiple characteristics simultaneously.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.
