    Numerical simulation of adhesively-bonded T-stiffeners by cohesive zone models

The bonding of composite materials with structural adhesives became more relevant in the industry, such as the aeronautical industry, which takes advantage of stiffener structures in composite materials using adhesive bonds. In any area of industry, large-scale application of a particular bonding technique requires reliable tools for the design and prediction of failure. This work evaluates the performance of a structural adhesive (Araldite® 2015) on a T-stiffener with composite adherends composed of an epoxy matrix reinforced with carbon fibers. The aim of the work is to numerically study, by the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Cohesive Zone Models (CZM), the behavior of different T-stiffener configurations under peel loads. A parametric study was carried out, including elastic stress analysis and maximum load (Pm) prediction, considering four geometrical parameters: flat adherend thickness (tP), stiffener thickness (t0), overlap length (LO) and curved deltoid radius (R). A significant effect was found for all studied parameters, on both stress distributions and Pm, enabling to define the optimal joint parameters for the T-stiffeners.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Effect of machining parameters on the mechanical properties of high dosage short carbon- fiber reinforced composites

    The machinability of polymer matrix composites with fibers strongly depends on the type of fiber and dosage in question, having a high influence on the selection of tools and cutting parameters. The cutting temperature depends of rotation speed and the feed cutting tools and is significantly influencing on the quality of the machined surfaces and tool life. This paper presents the results of a current study concerning the effect of the rotation-cutting speed on the cutting temperature, roughness and tensile strength of short carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites, potentially used in automotive and aeronautic industries. Composite plates were manufactured by compression molding, using short carbon fibers with 0.5 mm and 6 mm length. The increasing of the rotation-cutting speed increases significantly the temperature generated in the tool and slightly increases surface roughness. Tensile strength and Youngé–´s modulus are little sensitive to drilling speed. However, above 3000 rpm it was observed significant loss of stiffness, associated with the developed temperature in the machining process

    Response of fabric insert injection overmolding pp based composites subjected to single and muti-impact

    This paper presents the results of a current study on the development and impact response of composite plates manufactured by injection overmolding on the two sides of a single reinforcement fibre mat. The injection polymer is a talc-filled polypropylene, nowadays used for structural purposes. Three configurations with different insert fibre mats were used: Kevlar, biaxial and multiaxial glass fibre mats. The parameters studied were the fibre mat type and the impact energy. For single impact tests, it was concluded that the highest impact energy required to achieve impactor perforation is obtained with Kevlar insert, while the highest percentage of energy recovered is achieved with biaxial glass fibre netting. Kevlar insert also allows for the maximum impact stiffness. For the multi-impact tests, the recovered energy and the dynamic stiffness show the same tendencies of the single impact tests. On low energy impacts, the effect of the insert fibre and of the previous impact are quite reduced, while for impact energies above 6J, previous impacts reduce significantly the recovered energy and the impact energy for which the perforation was achieve

    A PRND polymorphism in Churra do Campo portuguese sheep breed

    Prion-like Doppel gene (PRND) is located downstream from priori protein gene (PRNP). Doppel protein is not related to prion disease but to male fertility. Our previous analysis of PRND coding region in 460 animals from 8 Portuguese sheep breeds, by multiple restriction fragment-single strand conformation polymorphism (MRFSSCP), revealed a synonymous substitution (78G>A). An association was found between identified PRND polymorphism and PRNP genotypes, determined by primer extension and grouped into 5 grades of increasing scrapie susceptibility-R1 to R5: PRND was monomorphic (GG) in animals with most resistant ARR/ARR PRNP genotype-R1; higher frequency of heterozygotes (GA) was significantly associated with ARQ/AHQR4. Therefore, EU selection programme to eradicate scrapie in sheep, based on PRNP genotypes, may reduce genetic diversity, with hypothetical repercussions on reproduction. The aim of current work was to evaluate 78G>A PRND polymorphism in highly endangered Churra do Campo Portuguese sheep breed. From a total of 73 animals analysed (16 R1, 36 R3, 18 R4, 3 R5), 72 were GG and 1 GA, the later being ARQ/ARQ (R4). Low incidence of PRND polymorphic variants in this breed may be explained by mating involving small number of related animals, and particular differences in distribution of PRNP genotypes

    Specific heat and magnetic order in LaMnO_{3+\delta}

    Magnetic and specific-heat measurements are performed in three different samples of LaMnO_{3+\delta}, with \delta=0.11, 0.15 and 0.26, presenting important disorder effects, such as carrier localization, due to high amounts of La and Mn vacancies. For the samples with \delta =0.11 and 0.15, magnetic measurements show signatures of a two-step transition: as the temperature is lowered, the system enters a ferromagnetic phase followed by a disorder-induced cluster-glass state. Spin-wave-like contributions and an unexpected large linear term are observed in the specific heat as a function of temperature. In the sample with the highest vacancy content, \delta=0.26, the disorder is sufficient to suppress even short-range ferromagnetic order and yield a spin-glass-like state.Comment: RevTeX 2-col, 8 pages, 5 ps figures included, submitted to PR
