Slavnov-Taylor identities for noncommutative QED
In this work we present an analysis of the one-loop Slavnov-Taylor identities
in noncommutative QED. The vectorial fermion-photon and the triple photon
vertex functions were studied, with the conclusion that no anomalies arise.Comment: 24 pages, revtex4, v2: typos correcte
Ion motion in the wake driven by long particle bunches in plasmas
We explore the role of the background plasma ion motion in self-modulated
plasma wakefield accelerators. We employ J. Dawson's plasma sheet model to
derive expressions for the transverse plasma electric field and ponderomotive
force in the narrow bunch limit. We use these results to determine the on-set
of the ion dynamics, and demonstrate that the ion motion could occur in
self-modulated plasma wakefield accelerators. Simulations show the motion of
the plasma ions can lead to the early suppression of the self-modulation
instability and of the accelerating fields. The background plasma ion motion
can nevertheless be fully mitigated by using plasmas with heavier plasmas.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure
Theory for a dissipative droplet soliton excited by a spin torque nanocontact
A novel type of solitary wave is predicted to form in spin torque oscillators
when the free layer has a sufficiently large perpendicular anisotropy. In this
structure, which is a dissipative version of the conservative droplet soliton
originally studied in 1977 by Ivanov and Kosevich, spin torque counteracts the
damping that would otherwise destroy the mode. Asymptotic methods are used to
derive conditions on perpendicular anisotropy strength and applied current
under which a dissipative droplet can be nucleated and sustained. Numerical
methods are used to confirm the stability of the droplet against various
perturbations that are likely in experiments, including tilting of the applied
field, non-zero spin torque asymmetry, and non-trivial Oersted fields. Under
certain conditions, the droplet experiences a drift instability in which it
propagates away from the nanocontact and is then destroyed by damping.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure
Interplay between disorder, quantum and thermal fluctuations in ferromagnetic alloys: The case of UCu2Si(2-x)Ge(x)
We consider, theoretically and experimentally, the effects of structural
disorder, quantum and thermal fluctuations in the magnetic and transport
properties of certain ferromagnetic alloys. We study the particular case of
UCu2Si(2-x)Ge(x). The low temperature resistivity, rho(T,x), exhibits Fermi
liquid (FL) behavior as a function of temperature T for all values of x, which
can be interpreted as a result of the magnetic scattering of the conduction
electrons from the localized U spins. The residual resistivity, rho(0,x),
follows the behavior of a disordered binary alloy. The observed non-monotonic
dependence of the Curie temperature, Tc(x), with x can be explained within a
model of localized spins interacting with an electronic bath whose transport
properties cross-over from ballistic to diffusive regimes. Our results clearly
show that the Curie temperature of certain alloys can be enhanced due to the
interplay between quantum and thermal fluctuations with disorder.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Magnetically assisted self-injection and radiation generation for plasma based acceleration
It is shown through analytical modeling and numerical simulations that
external magnetic fields can relax the self-trapping thresholds in plasma based
accelerators. In addition, the transverse location where self-trapping occurs
can be selected by adequate choice of the spatial profile of the external
magnetic field. We also find that magnetic-field assisted self-injection can
lead to the emission of betatron radiation at well defined frequencies. This
controlled injection technique could be explored using state-of-the-art
magnetic fields in current/next generation plasma/laser wakefield accelerator
experiments.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Plasma Physics and
