Physical regularization for the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm problem in conical space
We examine the bound state and scattering problem of a spin-one-half particle
undergone to an Aharonov-Bohm potential in a conical space in the
nonrelativistic limit. The crucial problem of the \delta-function singularity
coming from the Zeeman spin interaction with the magnetic flux tube is solved
through the self-adjoint extension method. Using two different approaches
already known in the literature, both based on the self-adjoint extension
method, we obtain the self-adjoint extension parameter to the bound state and
scattering scenarios in terms of the physics of the problem. It is shown that
such a parameter is the same for both situations. The method is general and is
suitable for any quantum system with a singular Hamiltonian that has bound and
scattering states.Comment: Revtex4, 5 pages, published versio
The ion motion in self-modulated plasma wakefield accelerators
The effects of plasma ion motion in self-modulated plasma based accelerators
is examined. An analytical model describing ion motion in the narrow beam limit
is developed, and confirmed through multi-dimensional particle-in-cell
simulations. It is shown that the ion motion can lead to the early saturation
of the self-modulation instability, and to the suppression of the accelerating
gradients. This can reduce the total energy that can be transformed into
kinetic energy of accelerated particles. For the parameters of future
proton-driven plasma accelerator experiments, the ion dynamics can have a
strong impact. Possible methods to mitigate the effects of the ion motion in
future experiments are demonstrated.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Nonrelativistic Limit of the Scalar Chern-Simons Theory and the Aharonov-Bohm Scattering
We study the nonrelativistic limit of the quantum theory of a Chern-Simons
field minimally coupled to a scalar field with quartic self-interaction. The
renormalization of the relativistic model, in the Coulomb gauge, is discussed.
We employ a procedure to calculate scattering amplitudes for low momenta that
generates their expansion and separates the contributions coming from
high and low energy intermediary states. The two body scattering amplitude is
calculated up to order . It is shown that the existence of a critical
value of the self-interaction parameter for which the 2-particle scattering
amplitude reduces to the Aharonov-Bohm one is a strictly nonrelativistic
feature. The subdominant terms correspond to relativistic corrections to the
Aharonov-Bohm scattering. A nonrelativistic reduction scheme and an effective
nonrelativistic Lagrangian to account for the relativistic corrections are
proposed.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, revtex, to be published in Int. J. Mod. Phys.
All-optical trapping and acceleration of heavy particles
A scheme for fast, compact, and controllable acceleration of heavy particles
in vacuum is proposed, in which two counterpropagating lasers with variable
frequencies drive a beat-wave structure with variable phase velocity, thus
allowing for trapping and acceleration of heavy particles, such as ions or
muons. Fine control over the energy distribution and the total charge of the
beam is obtained via tuning of the frequency variation. The acceleration scheme
is described with a one-dimensional theory, providing the general conditions
for trapping and scaling laws for the relevant features of the particle beam.
Two-dimensional, electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations confirm the
validity and the robustness of the physical mechanism.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to appear in New Journal of Physic
Very High Mach Number Electrostatic Shocks in Collisionless Plasmas
The kinetic theory of collisionless electrostatic shocks resulting from the
collision of plasma slabs with different temperatures and densities is
presented. The theoretical results are confirmed by self-consistent
particle-in-cell simulations, revealing the formation and stable propagation of
electrostatic shocks with very high Mach numbers (), well above the
predictions of the classical theories for electrostatic shocks.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
1103 e cultivadas no espaçamento 3 x 1 m.
