    Leaf Trait-Environment Relationships in a Subtropical Broadleaved Forest in South-East China

    Although trait analyses have become more important in community ecology, trait-environment correlations have rarely been studied along successional gradients. We asked which environmental variables had the strongest impact on intraspecific and interspecific trait variation in the community and which traits were most responsive to the environment. We established a series of plots in a secondary forest in the Chinese subtropics, stratified by successional stages that were defined by the time elapsed since the last logging activities. On a total of 27 plots all woody plants were recorded and a set of individuals of every species was analysed for leaf traits, resulting in a trait matrix of 26 leaf traits for 122 species. A Fourth Corner Analysis revealed that the mean values of many leaf traits were tightly related to the successional gradient. Most shifts in traits followed the leaf economics spectrum with decreasing specific leaf area and leaf nutrient contents with successional time. Beside succession, few additional environmental variables resulted in significant trait relationships, such as soil moisture and soil C and N content as well as topographical variables. Not all traits were related to the leaf economics spectrum, and thus, to the successional gradient, such as stomata size and density. By comparing different permutation models in the Fourth Corner Analysis, we found that the trait-environment link was based more on the association of species with the environment than of the communities with species traits. The strong species-environment association was brought about by a clear gradient in species composition along the succession series, while communities were not well differentiated in mean trait composition. In contrast, intraspecific trait variation did not show close environmental relationships. The study confirmed the role of environmental trait filtering in subtropical forests, with traits associated with the leaf economics spectrum being the most responsive ones

    Prospect of vasoactive intestinal peptide therapy for COPD/PAH and asthma: a review

    There is mounting evidence that pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) share important pathological features, including inflammation, smooth muscle contraction and remodeling. No existing drug provides the combined potential advantages of reducing vascular- and bronchial-constriction, and anti-inflammation. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is widely expressed throughout the cardiopulmonary system and exerts a variety of biological actions, including potent vascular and airway dilatory actions, potent anti-inflammatory actions, improving blood circulation to the heart and lung, and modulation of airway secretions. VIP has emerged as a promising drug candidate for the treatment of cardiopulmonary disorders such as PAH, asthma, and COPD. Clinical application of VIP has been limited in the past for a number of reasons, including its short plasma half-life and difficulty in administration routes. The development of long-acting VIP analogues, in combination with appropriate drug delivery systems, may provide clinically useful agents for the treatment of PAH, asthma, and COPD. This article reviews the physiological significance of VIP in cardiopulmonary system and the therapeutic potential of VIP-based agents in the treatment of pulmonary diseases

    Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis function in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

    The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis plays a critical role in mediating the physiological response to the imposition of stress. There are theoretical reasons to expect reduced basal cortisol secretion and cortisol hyporeactivity in hyperactive/impulsive or combined type attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Early studies reported profound abnormalities in the diurnal rhythm of cortisol secretion or the cortisol response to stress in children with severe or persistent ADHD. However, subsequent work using larger samples or improved methods has not provided convincing evidence for changes in basal cortisol secretion in non-comorbid forms of ADHD. In contrast, children with ADHD and comorbid oppositional defiant disorder show lower basal cortisol concentrations and a blunted cortisol awakening response. With respect to cortisol reactivity to stress in ADHD, recent evidence has been mixed, with some studies reporting normal cortisol responses and others showing blunted cortisol responses in non-comorbid ADHD. Again, it appears important to consider whether comorbid disorders are present, because children with ADHD and comorbid disruptive behavior disorders exhibit blunted cortisol responses, whereas those with comorbid anxiety disorders show enhanced cortisol responses to stress. Longitudinal studies are required to investigate whether abnormalities in cortisol secretion play a causal role in the etiology of ADHD and related disruptive behavior disorders
