Technical alignment
This essay discusses the importance of the areas of
infrastructure and testing to help digital preservation services
demonstrate reliability, transparency, and accountability. It
encourages practitioners to build a strong culture in which
transparency and collaborations between technical frameworks
are valued highly. It also argues for devising and applying
agreed-upon metrics that will enable the systematic analysis of
preservation infrastructure. The essay begins by defining
technical infrastructure and testing in the digital preservation
context, provides case studies that exemplify both progress and
challenges for technical alignment in both areas, and concludes
with suggestions for achieving greater degrees of technical
alignment going forward
ABSENCE OF HAEMATOZOA IN BREEDING MACARONI EUDYPTES CHRYSOLOPHUS AND ROCKHOPPER E. CHRYSOCOME PENGUINS AT MARION ISLAND
Haematozoan infections cause the death of penguins in captivity, but seldom in the wild. No haematozoa were found in 89 blood smears taken from macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus or 80 smears from eastern rockhopper penguins E. chrysocome filholi at subantarctic Marion Island between October and November 2001. Density matrix reconstruction from displaced photon number distributions
We consider state reconstruction from the measurement statistics of phase
space observables generated by photon number states. The results are obtained
by inverting certain infinite matrices. In particular, we obtain reconstruction
formulas, each of which involves only a single phase space observable.Comment: 19 page
Stability of the replica symmetric solution for the information conveyed by by a neural network
The information that a pattern of firing in the output layer of a feedforward
network of threshold-linear neurons conveys about the network's inputs is
considered. A replica-symmetric solution is found to be stable for all but
small amounts of noise. The region of instability depends on the contribution
of the threshold and the sparseness: for distributed pattern distributions, the
unstable region extends to higher noise variances than for very sparse
