    Development of a 1000V, 200A, low-loss, fast-switching, gate-assisted turn-off thyristor

    Feasibility was demonstrated for a thyristor that blocks 1000V forward and reverse, conducts 200A, and turns on in little more than 2 microsec with only 2A of gate drive. Its features include a turn-off time of 3 microsec achieved with 2A of gate assist current of a few microseconds duration and an energy dissipation of only 12 mJ per pulse for a 20 microsec half sine wave, 200A pulse. Extensive theoretical and experimental study of the electrical behavior of thyristors having a fast turn-off time have significantly improved the understanding of the physics of turning thyristor off. Thyristors of two new designs were fabricated and evaluated. The high speed and low power were achieved by a combination of gate amplification, cathode shunting, and gate-assisted turn-off. Two techniques for making this combination practical are described

    Soft X-ray Emission from the Spiral Galaxy NGC 1313

    The nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 1313 has been observed with the PSPC instr- ument on board the ROSAT X-ray satellite. Ten individual sources are found. Three sources (X-1, X-2 and X-3 [SN~1978K]) are very bright (~10^40 erg/s) and are unusual in that analogous objects do not exist in our Galaxy. We present an X-ray image of NGC~1313 and \xray spectra for the three bright sources. The emission from the nuclear region (R ~< 2 kpc) is dominated by source X-1, which is located ~1 kpc north of the photometric (and dynamical) center of NGC~1313. Optical, far-infrared and radio images do not indicate the presence of an active galactic nucleus at that position; however, the compact nature of the \xray source (X-1) suggests that it is an accretion-powered object with central mass M >~ 10^3 Msun. Additional emission (L_X ~ 10^39 erg/s) in the nuclear region extends out to ~2.6 kpc and roughly follows the spiral arms. This emission is from 4 sources with luminosity of several x 10^38 erg/s, two of which are consistent with emission from population I sources (e.g., supernova remnants, and hot interstellar gas which has been heated by supernova remnants). The other two sources could be emission from population II sources (e.g., low-mass \xray binaries). The bright sources X-2 and SN~1978K are positioned in the southern disk of NGC~1313. X-2 is variable and has no optical counterpart brighter than 20.8 mag (V-band). It is likely that it is an accretion-powered object in NGC~1313.     The results of a program to develop a fast high power thyristor that can operate in switching circuits at frequencies of 10 to 20 kHz with very low power loss are given. Feasibility was demonstrated for a thyristor that blocks 1000V forward and reverse, conducts 200A, turns on in little more than 2 more microseconds with only 2A of gate drive, turns off in 3 microseconds with 2A of gate assist current and has an energy dissipation of only 12 mJ per pulse for a 20 microsecond half sine wave 200A pulse. Data were generated that clearly showed the tradeoffs that can be made between the turn off time and forward drop. The understanding of this relationship is necessary in the selection of deliverable thyristors with turn off times up to 7 microseconds to give improved efficiency in a series resonant dc to dc inverter application

This paper implements this method for all spherical map projections likely to be of interest in astronomy. The new methods encompass existing informal FITS spherical coordinate conventions and translations from them are described.     Physical Properties of the X-ray Luminous SN 1978K in NGC 1313 from Multiwavelength Observations

    We update the light curves from the X-ray, optical, and radio bandpasses which we have assembled over the past decade, and present two observations in the ultraviolet using the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph. The HRI X-ray light curve is constant within the errors over the entire observation period. This behavior is confirmed in the ASCA GIS data obtained in 1993 and 1995. In the ultraviolet, we detected Ly-alpha, the [Ne IV] 2422/2424 A doublet, the Mg II doublet at 2800 A, and a line at ~3190 A we attribute to He I 3187. Only the Mg II and He I lines are detected at SN1978K's position. The optical light curve is formally constant within the errors, although a slight upward trend may be present. The radio light curve continues its steep decline. The longer time span of our radio observations compared to previous studies shows that SN1978K is in the same class of highly X-ray and radio-luminous supernovae as SN1986J and SN1988Z. The [Ne IV] emission is spatially distant from the location of SN1978K and originates in the pre-shocked matter. The Mg II doublet flux ratio implies the quantity of line optical depth times density of ~10^14 cm^-3 for its emission region.     Chandra and ASCA X-ray Observations of the Radio Supernova SN1979C IN NGC 4321

    We report on the X-ray observation of the radio selected supernova SN1979C carried out with ASCA in 1997 December and serendipitously available from a Chandra Guaranteed Time Observation in 1999 November. The supernova, of type SN II-Linear (SN IIL), was first observed in the optical and occurred in the weakly barred, almost face on spiral galaxy NGC 4321 (M100). The galaxy, a member of the Virgo S cluster, is at a distance of 17.1 Mpc, and contains at least three other supernovae discovered in this century. The useful exposure time was ~25 ks for the Solid-State Imaging Spectrometer (SIS), ~28 ks for the Gas Scintillation Imaging Spectrometer (GIS), and ~2.5 ks for Chandra's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). No point source was detected at the radio position of SN1979C in a 3' diameter half power response circle in the ASCA data. The background and galaxy subtracted SN signal had a 3sigma upper limit to the flux of 6.3x10^-14 ergs/s/cm^-2 in the full ASCA SIS band (0.4-10.0 keV) and a 3sigma upper limit of <3-4x10^-14 erg/s/cm^2 in the 2-10 keV band. In the Chandra data, a source at the position of SN1979C is marginally detected at energies below 2 keV at a flux consistent with the ROSAT HRI detection in 1995. At energies above 2 keV, no source is detected with an upper limit of ~3x10^-14 erg/s/cm^-2. These measurements give the first ever x-ray flux limit of a Type IIL SN above 2 keV which is an important diagnostic of the outgoing shock wave ploughing through the circumstellar medium.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted A

    Unexpected Magnetism of Small Silver Clusters

    The ground-state electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of small silver clusters, Agn_n (2\len\le22), have been studied using a linear combination of atomic Gaussian-type orbitals within the density functional theory. The results show that the silver atoms, which are diamagnetic in bulk environment, can be magnetic when they are grouped together in clusters. The Ag13_{13} cluster with icosahedral symmetry has the highest magnetic moment per atom among the studied silver clusters. The cluster symmetry and the reduced coordination number specific of small clusters reveal as a fundamental factor for the onset of the magnetism.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Chandra Observation of the X-Ray Source Population of NGC 6946

    We present the results of a study of discrete X-ray sources in NGC 6946 using a deep Chandra ACIS observation. Based on the slope of the log N-log S distribution and the general correlation of sources with the spiral arms, we infer that the overall discrete source sample in NGC 6946 is dominated by high mass X-ray binaries, in contrast to the source distributions in M31 and the Milky Way. This is consistent with the higher star formation rate in NGC 6946 than in those galaxies. We find that the strong X-ray sources in the region of the galactic center do not correlate in detail with images of the region in the near-IR, although one of them may be coincident with the galactic center. The non-central ultra-luminous X-ray source in NGC 6946, previously identified with a supernova remnant, has an X-ray spectrum and luminosity that is inconsistent with either a traditional pulsar wind nebula or a blast wave remnant.Comment: accepted Ap

    A Chandra Observation of the Diffuse Emission in the Face-on Spiral NGC 6946

    This paper describes the {\it Chandra} observation of the diffuse emission in the face-on spiral NGC 6946. Overlaid on optical and Hα{\alpha} images, the diffuse emission follows the spiral structure of the galaxy. An overlay on a 6 cm polarized radio intensity map confirms the phase offset of the polarized emission. We then extract and fit the spectrum of the unresolved emission with several spectral models. All model fits show a consistent continuum thermal temperature with a mean value of 0.25±\pm0.03 keV. Additional degrees of freedom are required to obtain a good fit and any of several models satisfy that need; one model uses a second continuum component with a temperature of 0.70±\pm0.10 keV. An abundance measure of 31.90+1.95^{+1.95}_{-1.90} for Si differs from the solar value at the 90% confidence level; the net diffuse spectrum shows the line lies above the instrumental Si feature. For Fe, the abundance measure of 0.67±\pm0.13 is significant at 99%. Multiple gaussians also provide a good fit. Two of the fitted gaussians capture the O VII and O VIII emission; the fitted emission is consistent with an {\it XMM-Newton} RGS spectrum of diffuse gas in M81. The ratio of the two lines is <<0.6-0.7 and suggests the possibility of non-equilibrium ionization conditions exist in the ISM of NGC 6946. An extrapolation of the point source luminosity distribution shows the diffuse component is not the sum of unresolved point sources; their contribution is at most 25%.Comment: accepted for ApJ; 16 pages; 12 figs; to meet Archive size limits, most converted to jpe
