    Current Fluctuations of the One Dimensional Symmetric Simple Exclusion Process with Step Initial Condition

    For the symmetric simple exclusion process on an infinite line, we calculate exactly the fluctuations of the integrated current QtQ_t during time tt through the origin when, in the initial condition, the sites are occupied with density ρa\rho_a on the negative axis and with density ρb\rho_b on the positive axis. All the cumulants of QtQ_t grow like t\sqrt{t}. In the range where Qt∌tQ_t \sim \sqrt{t}, the decay exp⁥[−Qt3/t]\exp [-Q_t^3/t] of the distribution of QtQ_t is non-Gaussian. Our results are obtained using the Bethe ansatz and several identities recently derived by Tracy and Widom for exclusion processes on the infinite line.Comment: 2 figure

    The Nucleon's Virtual Meson Cloud and Deep Inelastic Lepton Scattering

    We address the question whether the nucleon's antiquark sea can be attributed entirely to its virtual meson cloud and, in essence, whether there exists a smooth transition between hadronic and quark-gluon degrees of freedom. We take into account contributions from π\pi and KK mesons and compare with the nucleon's antiquark distributions which serve as a non-perturbative input to the QCD evolution equations. We elucidate the different behavior in the flavor singlet and non-singlet channels and study the dependence of our results on the scale Q2Q^2. The meson-nucleon cut-offs that we determine give not only an indication on the size of the region within which quarks are confined in a nucleon, but we find that the scale of these form factors is closely related to the four-momentum transfer, Q2Q^2, where gluons are resolved by a high energy probe, and that large meson loop momenta, ∣k∣≈0.8|{\bf k}| \approx 0.8 GeV, contribute significantly to the sea quark distributions. While the agreement of our calculations with data-based parametrizations is satisfactory and scale independent for the flavor breaking share of the nucleon's antiquark sea, the flavor singlet component is quite poorly described.     Robust Gain Scheduling for Smart-Structures in Parallel Robots

    Smart-structures offer the potential to increase the productivity of parallel robots by reducing disturbing vibrations caused by high dynamic loads. In parallel robots the vibration behavior of the structure is position dependent. A single robust controller is not able to gain satisfying control performance within the entire workspace. Hence, vibration behavior is linearized at several operating points and robust controllers are designed. Controllers can be smoothly switched by gain-scheduling. A stability proof for fast varying scheduling parameters based on the Small-Gain Theorem is developed. Experimental data from Triglide, a four degree of freedom (DOF) parallel robot of the Collaborative Research Center 562, validate the presented concepts
