Lattice Boltzmann versus Molecular Dynamics simulation of nano-hydrodynamic flows
A fluid flow in a simple dense liquid, passing an obstacle in a
two-dimensional thin film geometry, is simulated by Molecular Dynamics (MD)
computer simulation and compared to results of Lattice Boltzmann (LB)
simulations. By the appropriate mapping of length and time units from LB to MD,
the velocity field as obtained from MD is quantitatively reproduced by LB. The
implications of this finding for prospective LB-MD multiscale applications are
discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Low Cost True Monofiber Optical Probe for Local Void Fraction Measurements in Minichannels
Two phase flow inside minichannels is one of the most investigated research topic at present. The measurement of the flow rate parameters is fundamental to characterize the flow pattern and its evolution over time. This paper shows that an optical technique, well-known for large diameter pipes, can be applied to mini channels with a laminar mass flow rate. In particular, a Y-junction mono-fiber optic system with a chamfered tip probe has been built and tested. This method is applied to the local void fraction measurement in a copper capillary pipe with internal diameter of 2 mm and external diameter of 3.00 mm. Different probes have been developed and tested. The accuracy of the method depends on the size, the shape of the tip and on the tip distance from the pipe centre. Different distances and liquid flow rate have been tested. The two-phase flow pattern is also visualized and recorded by a high speed camera (FASTEC Troubleshooter 16000 fps) and post processed with an image analysis technique. A good agreement between the optical and the video signal has been observed
Simultaneous determination of eight underivatized biogenic amines in fish by solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
Biogenic amines on fish tissue are formed as a result of bacterial contamination and spoilage during storage.
A new method based on liquid chromatography (LC) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) using
a triple quadrupole (QqQ) analyser was developed for the analysis of eight biogenic amines (cadaverine,
histamine, phenylethylamine, putrescine, spermine, spermidine, tyramine and tryptamine) in fish tissues.
Sample preparation was performed by extraction with trichloroacetic acid 5% and solid phase
extraction clean up with STRATA X cartridge. The MS/MS method was validated and compared with a
method based on the analysis of dansyl derivatives by LC and fluorescence detector (FD). MS/MS achieved
higher sensitivity (from 0.02 mg kg1 for spermidine and phenylethylamine to 0.2 mg kg1 for spermine)
when compared to FD (from 1 mg kg1 for putrescine and tyramine to 4 mg kg1 for histamine); MS/MS
method showed higher precision too, with intraday relative standard deviations (RSDs) from 1% to 4%
with respect to those obtained with FD method (from 3% to 17%).
Recovery study was conducted at two different fortification levels and the average ranged from 71% to
93% for all of the studied compounds with RSDs lower than 18%. Matrix-matched standards were used to
counteract matrix effect observed in MS/MS determination. The applicability of the method was demonstrated
by the analysis of biogenic amines in fish obtained from commercials of Valencia
Two-dimensional Navier--Stokes simulation of deformation and break up of liquid patches
The large deformations and break up of circular 2D liquid patches in a high
Reynolds number (Re=1000) gas flow are investigated numerically. The 2D, plane
flow Navier--Stokes equations are directly solved with explicit tracking of the
interface between the two phases and a new algorithm for surface tension. The
numerical method is able to pursue the simulation beyond the breaking or
coalescence of droplets. The simulations are able to unveil the intriguing
details of the non-linear interplay between the deforming droplets and the
vortical structures in the droplet's wake.Comment: 13 pages including 4 postscript figures; Revised version as
