Galactic periodicity and the oscillating G model
We consider the model involving the oscillation of the effective
gravitational constant that has been put forward in an attempt to reconcile the
observed periodicity in the galaxy number distribution with the standard
cosmological models. This model involves a highly nonlinear dynamics which we
analyze numerically. We carry out a detailed study of the bound that
nucleosynthesis imposes on this model. The analysis shows that for any assumed
value for (the total energy density) one can fix the value of
(the baryonic energy density) in such a way as to
accommodate the observational constraints coming from the
primordial abundance. In particular, if we impose the inflationary value
the resulting baryonic energy density turns out to be . This result lies in the very narrow range allowed by the observed values of the primordial
abundances of the other light elements. The remaining fraction of
corresponds to dark matter represented by a scalar field.Comment: Latex file 29 pages with no figures. Please contact M.Salgado for

Gravitational waves from pulsations of neutron stars described by realistic Equations of State
In this work we discuss the time-evolution of nonspherical perturbations of a
nonrotating neutron star described by a realistic Equation of State (EOS). We
analyze 10 different EOS for a large sample of neutron star models. Various
kind of generic initial data are evolved and the corresponding gravitational
wave signals are computed. We focus on the dynamical excitation of fluid and
spacetime modes and extract the corresponding frequencies. We employ a
constrained numerical algorithm based on standard finite differencing schemes
which permits stable and long term evolutions. Our code provides accurate
waveforms and allows to capture, via Fourier analysis of the energy spectra,
the frequencies of the fluid modes with an accuracy comparable to that of
frequency domain calculations. The results we present here are useful for
provindig comparisons with simulations of nonlinear oscillations of (rotating)
neutron star models as well as testbeds for 3D nonlinear codes.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. Small changes. Version published in Phys. Rev.
An improved method of supercharged transposed latissimus dorsi flap with the skin paddle for the management of a complicated lumbosacral defect
OBJECTIVE: Treatment of nonhealing wounds of lower back often poses a powerful challenge. We present one of the first
report of treatment of a lumbosacral defect with a supercharged latissimus dorsi flap with the skin paddle.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 59 yearold man with myeloma of the sacral spine who underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy and subsequently, laminectomies and placement of hardware for ongoing paresis and spine instability. Then, he developed an open wound and osteomyelitis of the spine with culture positive tuberculous granulomas. After multiple surgical debridement, he presented to our service and was treated with a single stage debridement followed by the performance of a latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap based on paraspinal perforators and supercharged.
RESULTS: This solution, allowed for augmentation of blood flow to the muscle with the inferior gluteal artery, provided coverage of the defect resistant to the pressure, and simplified post-operative management of the patient.
CONCLUSIONS: Alternative treatment options, including free tissue transfer, posed difficulties in finding suitable recipient vessels near the defect, in inserting the flap so as to restore its original length without compromising blood flow, and in postoperative care of the patient. Treatment of a lumbosacral defect with a supercharged latissimus dorsi flap with the skin paddle may represent a milestone procedure for complicated lower spine wounds

On spontaneous scalarization
We study in the physical frame the phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization
that occurs in scalar-tensor theories of gravity for compact objects. We
discuss the fact that the phenomenon occurs exactly in the regime where the
Newtonian analysis indicates it should not. Finally we discuss the way the
phenomenon depends on the equation of state used to describe the nuclear
matter.Comment: 41 pages, RevTex, 10 ps figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

The Cauchy problem of scalar-tensor theories of gravity
The 3+1 formulation of scalar-tensor theories of gravity (STT) is obtained in
the physical (Jordan) frame departing from the 4+0 covariant field equations.
Contrary to the common belief (folklore), the new system of ADM-like equations
shows that the Cauchy problem of STT is well formulated (in the sense that the
whole system of evolution equations is of first order in the time-derivative).
This is the first step towards a full first order (in time and space)
formulation from which a subsequent hyperbolicity analysis (a well-posedness
determination) can be performed. Several gauge (lapse and shift) conditions are
considered and implemented for STT. In particular, a generalization of the
harmonic gauge for STT allows us to prove the well posedness of the STT using a
second order analysis which is very similar to the one used in general
relativity. Some spacetimes of astrophysical and cosmological interest are
considered as specific applications. Several appendices complement the ideas of
the main part of the paper.Comment: 29 pages Revtex; typos corrected; references added and updated; a

Deciphering the properties of the medium produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC by a pQCD analysis of quenched large spectra
We discuss the question of the relevance of perturbative QCD calculations for
analyzing the properties of the dense medium produced in heavy ion collisions.
Up to now leading order perturbative estimates have been worked out and
confronted with data for quenched large hadron spectra. Some of
them are giving paradoxical results, contradicting the perturbative framework
and leading to speculations such as the formation of a strongly interacting
quark-gluon plasma. Trying to bypass some drawbacks of these leading order
analysis and without performing detailed numerical investigations, we collect
evidence in favour of a consistent description of quenching and of the
characteristics of the produced medium within the pQCD framework.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
