PAKIKISAMA : A Filipino Trait

    Get PDF
Pakikisama refers to an interpersonal relationship where people are friendly with each other and is a typical personality trait of the Filipino people. It is expressed in their private lives, public workplaces, and relationships with neighbors. The purpose of this paper is to study this trait in detail. This study addresses Pakikisama as it is observed in the contexts of youth, workers, and national development. These examples will serve to better understand the value of pakikisama

Observation of Simultaneous Oscillation of Multiple Modes in a CW 300 GHz Gyrotron

    Get PDF
Multi-mode oscillation was observed in a 300 GHz fully CW gyrotron. It has been developed and installed in the Research Center for Development of Far-Infrared Region, University of Fukui as a power source of a submillimeter-wave material processing system. This gyrotron delivers 1.75 kW/CW at maximum. The radiation pattern is a Gaussian beam when the magnetic field strength Bc at the cavity is properly adjusted. However, within a range of Bc values, simultaneous oscillation of competing modes is observed, manifesting in radiation of the output power in multiple directions

Successful Endoscopic Management of Fish Bone Embedded into the Bladder Wall

    Get PDF
We report a case of a pyogenous vesical abscess resulting from an ingested fish bone embedded in the bladder wall that was treated endoscopically in an asymptomatic man. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed a linear radiopaque structure in the thickened left anterolateral wall of the bladder. Cystoscopy revealed a protruding mass, covered with normal-appearing mucosa, with outflow of pus from a shallow recess. Histopathological findings indicated that the transurethrally removed linear structure, located in the submucosa, was compatible with fish bone. A high index of suspicion should be maintained for the correct diagnosis to be made

The Characteristics and Skills of Filipino Caregivers : FOW as human resources for work life balance in Japan (2)

    Get PDF
This study is a part of a social psychology research to compare work/life balance on an international basis, and to consider international mutual dependence of social support. Filipinos work all over the world as caregivers and behind the success of the Filipinos in the field of care service are the unique aspects of some skills and traits they bring along with them to foreign lands. Data was gathered to define the traits and cultural values most associated with Filipinos. The following are described in detail: deep respect for the elderly, close family ties, flexibility and creativity, hard work, pakikisama (getting along with others), and proficiency in the English language

Filipino Personality Traits and Values for Social Support : FOW as human resources for work life balance in Japan (1)

The purpose of this study is to help contribute to solving nursing care problems in Japan by studying the characteristics, personality traits and values of the Filipino people. Filipinos work as nurses and caregivers overseas, serving to be the largest supplier of human resources relating to socialsupport. Literary documents and books were analyzed to gather concrete examples of Filipino personality traits and values. Interview surveys were also conducted. The ten most depicted traits were the following:pakikisama, hiya, utang na loob, close family ties, bahala na, amor propio, bayanihan, hospitality, ningas cogon, and respect for elders. These traitsare analyzed from a social psychological viewpoint

formation of a laminar electron flow for 300GHz high-power pulsed gyrotron

    Get PDF
This paper describes the design of a triode magnetron injection gun for use in a 200 kW, 300 GHz gyrotron. As power and frequency increase, the performance of the gyrotron becomes quite sensitive to the quality of the electron beam. Formation of a laminar electron flow is essential for the realization of a high quality beam with a small velocity spread. In this study, a new method is developed for a quantitative evaluation of the laminarity and is applied to optimize the electrode design. The laminarity depends not only on conventional design parameters such as the cathode slant angle but also on the spatial distribution of the electric field along the beam trajectory. In the optimized design, the velocity pitch factors, a, larger than 1.2 are obtained at 65 kV, 10A with spreads, Da, less than 5%

Observation of Dynamic Interactions between Fundamental and Second-Harmonic Modes in a High-Power Sub-Terahertz Gyrotron Operating in Regimes of Soft and Hard Self-Excitation

    Get PDF
Dynamic mode interaction between fundamental and second-harmonic modes has been observed in high-power sub-terahertz gyrotrons [T. Notake et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 225002 (2009); T. Saito et al. Phys. Plasmas 19, 063106 (2012)]. Interaction takes place between a parasitic fundamental or firstharmonic (FH) mode and an operating second-harmonic (SH) mode, as well as among SH modes. In particular, nonlinear excitation of the parasitic FH mode in the hard self-excitation regime with assistance of a SH mode in the soft self-excitation regime was clearly observed. Moreover, both cases of stable twomode oscillation and oscillation of the FH mode only were observed. These observations and theoretical analyses of the dynamic behavior of the mode interaction verify the nonlinear hard self-excitation of the FH mode

Effects of substitutions of glycine and asparagine for serine132 on activity and binding of human lipoprotein lipase to very low density lipoproteins

    Get PDF
AbstractFor studying the role of Ser132 in the putative catalytic site of human lipoprotein lipase (LPL), mutant LPL cDNAs expressing LPLs with amino acid substitutions of Gly or Asn for Ser132 were obtained by site-directed mutagenesis, and were expressed in COS-1 cells. Considerable amounts of LPL enzyme protein mass were detected in the culture medium of COS-1 cells transfected with wild-type LPL, LPL-Gly132, or LPL-Asn132. LPL-Gly132 hydrolyzed Triton X-100-triolein and tributyrin as effectively as wild-type LPL, whereas LPL-Asn132 showed no activity. LPL-Asn132 bound to very low density lipoproteins as effectively as wild-type LPL

Abstract

Background

<it>Bombina variegate </it>peptide 8 (Bv8) is a small protein secreted by frog skin. Recently it has been shown to contribute to tumor angiogenesis in mouse model. The purpose of this study was to investigate Bv8 in mice with type II collagen-induced arthritis (CIA).

Methods

We induced CIA in male DBA/1J mice. The severity of arthritis was evaluated based on an arthritis score. RNA was extracted from the joint, and examined for Bv8 mRNA expression by RT-PCR and real-time RT-PCR. Synovial tissue and bone marrow were immunohistochemically examined using anti-Bv8 antibody.

Results

The level of Bv8 mRNA expression in the joint was below the detection limit in the control group, but was elevated in the CIA group, and was correlated with the arthritis score. In addition, an increase in Bv8-positive cells was observed in the synovium and bone marrow in the CIA group.

Conclusion

Bv8 was elevated in the synovium and bone marrow of CIA mice, suggesting that Bv8 plays an important role in the pathogenesis of arthritis.</p
