Intrapancreatic accessory spleen false positive to 68Ga-Dotatoc: case report and literature review

    Get PDF
Background: Intrapancreatic accessory spleen (IPAS) is an uncommon finding of pancreatic mass. Differential diagnosis with pancreatic tumor, especially with non-functional neuroendocrine tumor (NF-NET), may be very hard and sometimes it entails unnecessary surgery. A combination of CT scan, MRI, and nuclear medicine can confirm the diagnosis of IPAS. 68-Ga-Dotatoc PET/CT is the gold standard in NET diagnosis and it can allow to distinguish between IPAS and NET. Case presentation: A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for an incidental nodule in the tail of the pancreas with focal uptake of 68-Ga-dotatate at PET/CT. NET was suspected and open distal splenopancreatectomy was performed. Pathologic examination revealed an IPAS. Conclusion: This is the second IPAS case in which a positive 68Ga-Dotatoc uptake led to a false diagnosis of pancreatic NET. Here is a proposal of a literature review

Photo-catalytic activity of BiVO4 thin film electrodes for solar-driven water splitting

There is an ever-increasing attention directed to the development of solar fuels by photo-electrochemical water splitting, given the inexhaustible availability of solar energy. The water oxidation half-reaction is a critical step for the overall water splitting reaction, and the development of suitable photoanodes is therefore required. The present research work focuses on bismuth vanadate thin films’ deposition on FTO glass electrodes, through the dip coating technique, and discusses the influence of the film preparation technique on the electrode's photo-electrochemical performance. The bismuth vanadate thin films were synthesized with thicknesses ranging from 60 to 210 nm, depending on a number of dip coatings from 2 to 15. The structural and optical characterization of the films showed that monoclinic scheelite-type phase was obtained in all samples, with crystal sizes ranging from 24 to 65 nm, at increasing film thicknesses, and corresponding band gaps between 2.55 and 2.35 eV. A maximum photo-current density of about 0.57 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under sunlight illumination was obtained for an electrode thickness of 160 nm. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy elucidated the transport mechanisms occurring at the electrolyte–electrode interface, as well as inside the film. The estimation of the equivalent circuit parameters showed that an increasing film thickness decreased the resistance associated to the charge transfer between the electrolyte and the electrode (from 1100 to 450 Ω, from 60 to 160 nm layer thickness, respectively), given the higher number of active sites involved in the reaction. However, excessive film thicknesses increase the probability of charge recombination within the film and, in the specific case here investigated, can also be associated to film imperfections arising from several deposition-calcination cycles, which further act as traps. These concurring phenomena are of high relevance to isolate the rate-determining step of the water oxidation half-reaction, in the perspective of an optimization of bismuth vanadate film coating on FTO to obtain photo anodes

The influence of rifle carriage on the kinetics of human gait

    Get PDF
The influence that rifle carriage has on human gait has received little attention in the published literature. Rifle carriage has two main effects, to add load to the anterior of the body and to restrict natural arm swing patterns. Kinetic data were collected from 15 male participants, with 10 trials in each of four experimental conditions. The conditions were: walking without a load (used as a control condition); carrying a lightweight rifle simulator, which restricted arm movements but applied no additional load; wearing a 4.4 kg diving belt, which allowed arms to move freely; carrying a weighted (4.4 kg) replica SA80 rifle. Walking speed was fixed at 1.5 m/s (+5%) and data were sampled at 400 Hz. Results showed that rifle carriage significantly alters the ground reaction forces produced during walking, the most important effects being an increase in the impact peak and mediolateral forces. This study suggests that these effects are due to the increased range of motion of the body’s centre of mass caused by the impeding of natural arm swing patterns. The subsequent effect on the potential development of injuries in rifle carriers is unknown

Child healthcare services offered by the Vatican City State in its national territory and in extra-territorial neighboring Italian areas

Pediatric healthcare activity related to the Vatican City State is carried out at secondary and tertiary levels in the two main pediatric territorial and extra-territorial medical centers, which are administered by the Vatican: the Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital and the Mother and Child pediatric Department of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Medical Center. Both centers are recognized by the Italian State and internationally with the formal legal status of Scientific Institutes for Clinical Research. The relations established between the Holy See, in the person of the Secretary of State, the Board of Directors, the President of the Board, and the Board of Auditors regulate the management of the two medical centers. The child healthcare and research activity of the two Vatican State administered medical centers is described in this article
