A Psychophysical Investigation of Differences between Synchrony and Temporal Order Judgments.
Synchrony judgments involve deciding whether cues to an event are in synch or out of synch, while temporal order judgments involve deciding which of the cues came first. When the cues come from different sensory modalities these judgments can be used to investigate multisensory integration in the temporal domain. However, evidence indicates that that these two tasks should not be used interchangeably as it is unlikely that they measure the same perceptual mechanism. The current experiment further explores this issue across a variety of different audiovisual stimulus types
A novel long non-coding natural antisense RNA is a negative regulator of Nos1 gene expression
Long non-coding natural antisense transcripts (NATs) are widespread in eukaryotic species. Although recent studies indicate that long NATs are engaged in the regulation of gene expression, the precise functional roles of the vast majority of them are unknown. Here we report that a long NAT (Mm-antiNos1 RNA) complementary to mRNA encoding the neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase (Nos1) is expressed in the mouse brain and is transcribed from the non-template strand of the Nos1 locus. Nos1 produces nitric oxide (NO), a major signaling molecule in the CNS implicated in many important functions including neuronal differentiation and memory formation. We show that the newly discovered NAT negatively regulates Nos1 gene expression. Moreover, our quantitative studies of the temporal expression profiles of Mm-antiNos1 RNA in the mouse brain during embryonic development and postnatal life indicate that it may be involved in the regulation of NO-dependent neurogenesis
Higher moment singularities explored by the net proton non-statistical fluctuations
We use the non-statistical fluctuation instead of the full one to explore the
higher moment singularities of net proton event distributions in the
relativistic Au+Au collisions at from 11.5 to 200 GeV
calculated by the parton and hadron cascade model PACIAE. The PACIAE results of
mean (), variance (), skewness (), and kurtosis () are
consistent with the corresponding STAR data. Non-statistical moments are
calculated as the difference between the moments derived from real events and
the ones from mixed events, which are constructed by combining particles
randomly selected from different real events. An evidence of singularity at
60 GeV is first seen in the energy dependent

The Social Costs in Communication Hiccups Between Native and Nonnative Speakers
It is well-established that native speakers perceive nonnative speakers with strong foreign accents, compared with those with a more nativelike accent, as less intelligent and competent, less ambitious and dependable as coworkers, and less comfortable around native speakers. But little is known about how nonnative speakers themselves are affected when communication hiccups—often due to incorrect or accented pronunciations—occur in their conversations with native speakers. In this experiment, mispronunciations of an English word were elicited from native Chinese speakers in phone conversations via the Internet with an American English speaker, who then either asked for clarification of the word or showed no confusion about the word but asked about something else. Chinese speakers’ reactions were measured using a combination of self-reports, facial affective coding, and skin-conductance responses. When the American asked for clarification—compared with when he did not—Chinese speakers were left feeling more anxious, embarrassed, and unsure of their English abilities, as well as feeling less positive about the American, finding him less attractive socially and their conversation with him less enjoyable.postprin
Influence of randomly distributed magnetic nanoparticles on surface superconductivity in Nb films
We report on combined resistance and magnetic measurements in a hybrid
structure (HS) of randomly distributed anisotropic CoPt magnetic nanoparticles
(MN) embedded in a 160 nm Nb thick film. Our resistance measurements exhibited
a sharp increase at the magnetically determined bulk upper-critical fields
Hc2(T). Above these points the resistance curves are rounded, attaining the
normal state value at much higher fields identified as the surface
superconductivity fields Hc3(T). When plotted in reduced temperature units, the
characteristic field lines Hc3(T) of the HS and of a pure Nb film, prepared at
exactly the same conditions, coincide for H10 kOe
they strongly segregate. Interestingly, the characteristic value H=10 kOe is
equal to the saturation field of the MN. The behavior mentioned above is
observed only for the case where the field is normal to the HS, while is absent
when the field is parallel to the film. Our experimental results suggest that
the observed enhancement of surface superconductivity field Hc3(T) is possibly
due to the not uniform local reduction of the external magnetic field by the
dipolar fields of the MN.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.
Deformation and Depinning of Superconducting Vortices from Artificial Defects: A Ginzburg-Landau Study
Using Ginzburg-Landau theory, we have performed detailed studies of vortices
in the presence of artificial defect arrays, for a thin film geometry. We show
that when a vortex approaches the vicinity of a defect, an abrupt transition
occurs in which the vortex core develops a ``string'' extending to the defect
boundary, while simultaneously the supercurrents and associated magnetic flux
spread out and engulf the defect. Current induced depinning of vortices is
shown to be dominated by the core string distortion in typical experimental
situations. Experimental consequences of this unusual depinning behavior are
