Approximate symmetry reduction approach: infinite series reductions to the KdV-Burgers equation
For weak dispersion and weak dissipation cases, the (1+1)-dimensional
KdV-Burgers equation is investigated in terms of approximate symmetry reduction
approach. The formal coherence of similarity reduction solutions and similarity
reduction equations of different orders enables series reduction solutions. For
weak dissipation case, zero-order similarity solutions satisfy the Painlev\'e
II, Painlev\'e I and Jacobi elliptic function equations. For weak dispersion
case, zero-order similarity solutions are in the form of Kummer, Airy and
hyperbolic tangent functions. Higher order similarity solutions can be obtained
by solving linear ordinary differential equations.Comment: 14 pages. The original model (1) in previous version is generalized
to a more extensive form and the incorrect equations (35) and (36) in
previous version are correcte
Nonlinear Aggregation-Diffusion Equations: Radial Symmetry and Long Time Asymptotics
We analyze under which conditions equilibration between two competing
effects, repulsion modeled by nonlinear diffusion and attraction modeled by
nonlocal interaction, occurs. This balance leads to continuous compactly
supported radially decreasing equilibrium configurations for all masses. All
stationary states with suitable regularity are shown to be radially symmetric
by means of continuous Steiner symmetrization techniques. Calculus of
variations tools allow us to show the existence of global minimizers among
these equilibria. Finally, in the particular case of Newtonian interaction in
two dimensions they lead to uniqueness of equilibria for any given mass up to
translation and to the convergence of solutions of the associated nonlinear
aggregation-diffusion equations towards this unique equilibrium profile up to
translations as
Numerical simulation of solid tumor blood perfusion and drug delivery during the “vascular normalization window” with antiangiogenic therapy
This Article is provided by the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund - Copyright @ 2011 Hindawi PublishingTo investigate the influence of vascular normalization on solid tumor blood perfusion and drug delivery, we used the generated blood vessel network for simulations. Considering the hemodynamic parameters changing after antiangiogenic therapies, the results show that the interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) in tumor tissue domain decreases while the pressure gradient increases during the normalization window. The decreased IFP results in more efficient delivery of conventional drugs to the targeted cancer cells. The outcome of therapies will improve if the antiangiogenic therapies and conventional therapies are carefully scheduled
Wood-Inspired Morphologically Tunable Aligned Hydrogel for High-Performance Flexible All-Solid-State Supercapacitors
Oriented microstructures are widely found in various biological systems for multiple functions. Such anisotropic structures provide low tortuosity and sufficient surface area, desirable for the design of high-performance energy storage devices. Despite significant efforts to develop supercapacitors with aligned morphology, challenges remain due to the predefined pore sizes, limited mechanical flexibility, and low mass loading. Herein, a wood-inspired flexible all-solid-state hydrogel supercapacitor is demonstrated by morphologically tuning the aligned hydrogel matrix toward high electrode-materials loading and high areal capacitance. The highly aligned matrix exhibits broad morphological tunability (47–12 µm), mechanical flexibility (0°–180° bending), and uniform polypyrrole loading up to 7 mm thick matrix. After being assembled into a solid-state supercapacitor, the areal capacitance reaches 831 mF cm−2 for the 12 µm matrix, which is 259% times of the 47 µm matrix and 403% times of nonaligned matrix. The supercapacitor also exhibits a high energy density of 73.8 µWh cm−2, power density of 4960 µW cm−2, capacitance retention of 86.5% after 1000 cycles, and bending stability of 95% after 5000 cycles. The principle to structurally design the oriented matrices for high electrode material loading opens up the possibility for advanced energy storage applications
