    Thermodynamics of Ideal Gas in Doubly Special Relativity

    We study thermodynamics of an ideal gas in Doubly Special Relativity. New type of special functions (which we call Incomplete Modified Bessel functions) emerge. We obtain a series solution for the partition function and derive thermodynamic quantities. We observe that DSR thermodynamics is non-perturbative in the SR and massless limits.     The Resummed Photon Spectrum in Radiative Upsilon Decays

    We present a theoretical prediction for the photon spectrum in radiative Upsilon decay including the effects of resumming the endpoint region, E_\gamma -> M_\Upsilon/2. Our approach is based on NRQCD and the soft collinear effective theory. We find that our results give much better agreement with data than the leading order NRQCD prediction.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Magnetic bearings for free-piston Stirling engines

    The feasibility and efficacy of applying magnetic bearings to free-piston Stirling-cycle power conversion machinery currently being developed for long-term space missions are assessed. The study was performed for a 50-kWe Reference Stirling Space Power Converter (RSSPC) which currently uses hydrostatic gas bearings to support the reciprocating displacer and power piston assemblies. Active magnetic bearings of the attractive electromagnetic type are feasible for the RSSPC power piston. Magnetic support of the displacer assembly would require unacceptable changes to the design of the current RSSPC. However, magnetic suspension of both displacer and power piston is feasible for a relative-displacer version of the RSSPC. Magnetic suspension of the RSSPC power piston can potentially increase overall efficiency by 0.5 to 1 percent (0.1 to 0.3 efficiency points). Magnetic bearings will also overcome several operational concerns associated with hydrostatic gas bearing systems. These advantages, however, are accompanied by a 5 percent increase in specific mass of the RSSPC

    A High Reliability Asymptotic Approach for Packet Inter-Delivery Time Optimization in Cyber-Physical Systems

    In cyber-physical systems such as automobiles, measurement data from sensor nodes should be delivered to other consumer nodes such as actuators in a regular fashion. But, in practical systems over unreliable media such as wireless, it is a significant challenge to guarantee small enough inter-delivery times for different clients with heterogeneous channel conditions and inter-delivery requirements. In this paper, we design scheduling policies aiming at satisfying the inter-delivery requirements of such clients. We formulate the problem as a risk-sensitive Markov Decision Process (MDP). Although the resulting problem involves an infinite state space, we first prove that there is an equivalent MDP involving only a finite number of states. Then we prove the existence of a stationary optimal policy and establish an algorithm to compute it in a finite number of steps. However, the bane of this and many similar problems is the resulting complexity, and, in an attempt to make fundamental progress, we further propose a new high reliability asymptotic approach. In essence, this approach considers the scenario when the channel failure probabilities for different clients are of the same order, and asymptotically approach zero. We thus proceed to determine the asymptotically optimal policy: in a two-client scenario, we show that the asymptotically optimal policy is a "modified least time-to-go" policy, which is intuitively appealing and easily implementable; in the general multi-client scenario, we are led to an SN policy, and we develop an algorithm of low computational complexity to obtain it. Simulation results show that the resulting policies perform well even in the pre-asymptotic regime with moderate failure probabilities

    With this issue of Moveable Type, we hope to set in motion a new wave of interest in ambient literature, seeking new insight into the patterns and thematics of ambient writing and bringing to light discussions left unresolved by various critiques of ambience. Our issue theme of Ambience presents a conversation between a group of scholars, writers and reviewers who locate ambient literatures beyond apps and web browsers, identify new research trajectories, and challenge definitions of ambient literature, countering its contemporariness and reliance on technology by foregrounding precursors to ambient literature. We suggest that these developments be considered beyond a distraction or aberrant offshoot of book history; as contiguous with historic reader response practice; and that they may come to be an important component or even central element of composition and reception

    Leptoproduction of J/psi

    We study leptoproduction of J/ψJ/\psi at large Q2Q^2 within the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. The cross section is dominated by color-octet terms that are of order αs\alpha_s. The color-singlet term, which is of order αs2\alpha^2_s, is shown to be a small contribution to the total cross section. We also calculate the tree diagrams for color-octet production at order αs2\alpha^2_s in a region of phase space where there is no leading color-octet contribution. We find that in this regime the color-singlet contribution dominates. We argue that non-perturbative corrections arising from diffractive leptoproduction, higher twist effects, and higher order terms in the NRQCD velocity expansion should be suppressed as Q2Q^2 is increased. Therefore, the color-octet matrix elements and and can be reliably extracted from this process. Finally, we point out that an experimental measurement of the polarization of leptoproduced J/ψJ/\psi will provide an excellent test of the NRQCD factorization formalism.Comment: 33 pages latex. 10 figures.
