Charm Meson Mixing: An Experimental Review
We review current experimental results on charm mixing and CP violation. We
survey experimental techniques, including time-dependent, time-independent, and
quantum-correlated measurements. We review techniques that use a slow pion tag
from D*+ --> pi+ D0 + c.c. decays and those that do not, and cover two-body and
multi-body D0 decay modes. We provide a summary of D-mixing results to date and
comment on future experimental prospects at the LHC and other new or planned

Relativistic many-body calculations of the Stark-induced amplitude of the 6P1/2 -7P1/2 transition in thallium
Stark-induced amplitudes for the 6P1/2 - 7P1/2 transition in Tl I are
calculated using the relativistic SD approximation in which single and double
excitations of Dirac-Hartree-Fock levels are summed to all orders in
perturbation theory. Our SD values alpha S = 368 a0 3 and beta S= 298 a 0 3 are
in good agreement with the measurements alpha S=377(8) a 0 3$ and beta S =
313(8) a 0 3 by D. DeMille, D. Budker, and E. D. Commins [Phys. Rev. A 50, 4657
(1994)]. Calculations of the Stark shifts in the 6P1/2 - 7P1/2 and 6P1/2 -
7S1/2 transitions are also carried out. The Stark shifts predicted by our
calculations agree with the most accurate measured values within the
experimental uncertainties for both transitions

Francis F. Maury, M.D. (1840 to 1879): an often forgotten pioneer in early American surgery.
Francis F. Maury (Fig. 1) was born on August 9, 1840, in Danville, Kentucky, where he was raised on a farm by his mother and father. His father was an Episcopal clergyman of Huguenot descent, whose forefathers had fled from France to escape religious persecution. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Center College in the summer of 1860, he entered medical school at the University of Virginia. After one full term, he matriculated to Philadelphia’s Jefferson Medical College and completed his medical education as a private student under the direction of Dr. Samuel D. Gross.1, 2 He obtained his Doctorate of Medicine in March of 1862 at the age of only 21 years. Such were his talents as a medical student that he was appointed resident physician at the Philadelphia Hospital one month before his graduation. Although he spent only one year there, he developed a reputation as a tireless, devoted, and charming surgeon. In April 1863, Maury was assigned to duty at the South Street General Hospital to serve as acting assistant surgeon in the U.S. Army for two years. In October 1863, he was appointed assistant professor to Dr. Gross and six months later became chief of Dr. Gross’ surgical clinic at Jefferson Medical College. In November 1865, at the age of only 25 years, he returned to the Philadelphia Hospital, where he was appointed one of the chief surgeons on the retirement of Dr. Gross from that institution. In April of 1866, Maury founded the Summer Course on Venereal and Cutaneous Diseases in the Jefferson Medical College, where he taught until his death.1 Although Maury did not consider himself a dermatologist, his expertise in this emerging field was widely recognized
Abdominal intercostal hernia: a rare complication after blunt trauma.
Abdominal intercostal hernia (AIH) is uncommonly reported in the literature with only 20 cases reported to date.1–3 We report a case of a delayed incarcerated AIH secondary to blunt trauma from a motor vehicle accident in which the colon and diaphragm herniated through an associated chest defect that was repaired successfully through a transabdominal approach using primary repair of the defect in combination with onlay porcine patch reinforcement
Absorbing systematic effects to obtain a better background model in a search for new physics
This paper presents a novel approach to estimate the Standard Model
backgrounds based on modifying Monte Carlo predictions within their systematic
uncertainties. The improved background model is obtained by altering the
original predictions with successively more complex correction functions in
signal-free control selections. Statistical tests indicate when sufficient
compatibility with data is reached. In this way, systematic effects are
absorbed into the new background model. The same correction is then applied on
the Monte Carlo prediction in the signal region. Comparing this method to other
background estimation techniques shows improvements with respect to statistical
and systematical uncertainties. The proposed method can also be applied in
other fields beyond high energy physics
Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell phase in the superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4: Theory versus experiment
We consider a formation of the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) phase
in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) conductor in a magnetic field, parallel to its
conducting chains, where we take into account both the paramagnetic
spin-splitting and orbital destructive effects against superconductivity. We
show that, due to a relative weakness of the orbital effects in a Q1D case, the
LOFF phase appears in (TMTSF)ClO superconductor for real values of its
Q1D band parameters. We compare our theoretical calculations with the recent
experimental data by Y. Maeno's group [S. Yonezawa et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.
\textbf{100}, 117002 (2008)] and show that there is a good qualitative and
quantitative agreement between the theory and experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
A Simple Model for r-Process Scatter and Halo Evolution
Recent observations of heavy elements produced by rapid neutron capture
(r-process) in the halo have shown a striking and unexpected behavior: within a
single star, the relative abundances of r-process elements heavier than Eu are
the same as the same as those of solar system matter, while across stars with
similar metallicity Fe/H, the r/Fe ratio varies over two orders of magnitude.
In this paper we present a simple analytic model which describes a star's
abundances in terms of its ``ancestry,'' i.e., the number of nucleosynthesis
events (e.g., supernova explosions) which contributed to the star's
composition. This model leads to a very simple analytic expression for the
abundance scatter versus Fe/H, which is in good agreement with the data and
with more sophisticated numerical models. We investigate two classes of
scenarios for r-process nucleosynthesis, one in which r-process synthesis
events occur in only \sim 4% of supernovae but iron synthesis is ubiquitous,
and one in which iron nucleosynthesis occurs in only about 9% of supernovae.

are similar for [Fe/H] \ga -2.5, but that these models can be readily
distinguished observationally by measuring the dispersion in r/Fe at [Fe/H] \la

The Radio Recovery of SN 1970G: The Continuing Radio Evolution of SN 1970G
Using the Very Large Array, we have detected radio emission from the site of
SN 1970G in the Sc galaxy M101. These observations are 31 years after the
supernova event, making SN 1970G the longest monitored radio supernova. With
flux densities of 0.12 +/- 0.020 mJy at 6 cm and 0.16 +/- 0.015 mJy at 20 cm,
the spectral index of -0.24 +/- 0.20 appears to have flattened somewhat when
compared with the previously reported value of -0.56 +/- 0.11, taken in 1990.
The radio emission at 20 cm has decayed since the 1990 observations with a
power-law index of beta_20cm = -0.28 +/- 0.13. We discuss the radio properties
of this source and compare them to those of other Type II radio supernovae.Comment: 11 pages, 1 table and 2 figures; To appear in Astrophysical Journal
