    Condensation for a fixed number of independent random variables

    A family of m independent identically distributed random variables indexed by a chemical potential \phi\in[0,\gamma] represents piles of particles. As \phi increases to \gamma, the mean number of particles per site converges to a maximal density \rho_c<\infty. The distribution of particles conditioned on the total number of particles equal to n does not depend on \phi (canonical ensemble). For fixed m, as n goes to infinity the canonical ensemble measure behave as follows: removing the site with the maximal number of particles, the distribution of particles in the remaining sites converges to the grand canonical measure with density \rho_c; the remaining particles concentrate (condensate) on a single site.Comment: 6 page

    On the possibility to supercool molecular hydrogen down to superfluid transition

    Recent calculations by Vorobev and Malyshenko (JETP Letters, 71, 39, 2000) show that molecular hydrogen may stay liquid and superfluid in strong electric fields of the order of 4×107V/cm4\times 10^7 V/cm. I demonstrate that strong local electric fields of similar magnitude exist beneath a two-dimensional layer of electrons localized in the image potential above the surface of solid hydrogen. Even stronger local fields exist around charged particles (ions or electrons) if surface or bulk of a solid hydrogen crystal is statically charged. Measurements of the frequency shift of the 121 \to 2 photoresonance transition in the spectrum of two-dimensional layer of electrons above positively or negatively charged solid hydrogen surface performed in the temperature range 7 - 13.8 K support the prediction of electric field induced surface melting. The range of surface charge density necessary to stabilize the liquid phase of molecular hydrogen at the temperature of superfluid transition is estimated.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Kinetics of viral self-assembly: the role of ss RNA antenna

    A big class of viruses self-assemble from a large number of identical capsid proteins with long flexible N-terminal tails and ss RNA. We study the role of the strong Coulomb interaction of positive N-terminal tails with ss RNA in the kinetics of the in vitro virus self-assembly. Capsid proteins stick to unassembled chain of ss RNA (which we call "antenna") and slide on it towards the assembly site. We show that at excess of capsid proteins such one-dimensional diffusion accelerates self-assembly more than ten times. On the other hand at excess of ss RNA, antenna slows self-assembly down.     A simple sandpile model of active-absorbing state transitions

    We study a simple sandpile model of active-absorbing state transitions in which a particle can hop out of a site only if the number of particles at that site is above a certain threshold. We show that the active phase has product measure whereas nontrivial correlations are found numerically in the absorbing phase. It is argued that the system relaxes to the latter phase slower than exponentially.     Two-particle annihilation reaction, A+A -> inert, for immobile reactants on the Bethe lattice is solved exactly for the initially random distribution. The process reaches an absorbing state in which no nearest-neighbor reactants are left. The approach of the concentration to the limiting value is exponential.     Timing and Determinants of Tuberculosis Treatment Interruption in Nairobi County, Kenya

    Tuberculosis (TB) treatment is a key pillar in the management and control of TB. Service delivery within the treatment facilities plays an important role in ensuring treatment adherence by TB patients. A prospective cohort study involving 25 health facilities, 25 facility in-charge officers and 291 patients diagnosed as new sputum smear positive (SM+) between December 2014 and July 2015 was undertaken. The aim of the study was to estimate the median time to treatment interruption, associated factors and overall predictors of non-adherence to TB treatment. A total of 19 (6.5%) treatment interruptions were observed. The median time to default was 56 [95% CI, 36-105] days. Treatment in a non-public facility [AOR=0.210, 95% CI (0.046-0.952)] and facilities perceived to have adequate number of health care workers to offer Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) [AOR=0.195, 95% CI (0.068-0.56)] showed a lower odds of treatment interruption whereas attainment of secondary level education [AOR=5.28, 95% CI (1.18-23.59)] indicated a higher odds of treatment interruption. Non-clinical aspects of health care service delivery influence patient adherence to TB treatment. Health seeking behavior of groups considered to be high risk for treatment interruption should be incorporated into the design and delivery of TB treatment
