Dissipative dynamics of a Harmonic Oscillator : A non-perturbative approach
Starting from a microscopic theory, we derive a master equation for a
harmonic oscillator coupled to a bath of non-interacting oscillators. We follow
a non-perturbative approach, proposed earlier by us for the free Brownian
particle. The diffusion constants are calculated analytically and the
positivity of the Master Equation is shown to hold above a critical
temperature. We compare the long time behaviour of the average kinetic and
potential energies with known thermodynamic results. In the limit of vainishing
oscillator frequency of the system, we recover the results of the free Brownian

Optically Catalytic Action of Anthracene and Phenanthrene in Giving Raman Shifts of Some Organic Compounds
By taking the wavelengths of the absorption bands of anthracene in
benzene, methyl alcohol, hexane, toluene and chlorobenzenc and those of phenanthrene in
Benzene and methyl alcohol as giving the exciting frequencies the differences between these
and the frequencies of the fluorescent bands have been calculated. These have been found to
agree well with most of the Raman frequencies of the solvents. Some shift observed in the
present case which do not agree with any known Raman shift have been shown to he capable
of being built up by the combinations of Raman shifts observed by the present or other
authors
Collective behavior of stock price movements in an emerging market
To investigate the universality of the structure of interactions in different
markets, we analyze the cross-correlation matrix C of stock price fluctuations
in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. We find that this emerging
market exhibits strong correlations in the movement of stock prices compared to
developed markets, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). This is shown to
be due to the dominant influence of a common market mode on the stock prices.
By comparison, interactions between related stocks, e.g., those belonging to
the same business sector, are much weaker. This lack of distinct sector
identity in emerging markets is explicitly shown by reconstructing the network
of mutually interacting stocks. Spectral analysis of C for NSE reveals that,
the few largest eigenvalues deviate from the bulk of the spectrum predicted by
random matrix theory, but they are far fewer in number compared to, e.g., NYSE.
We show this to be due to the relative weakness of intra-sector interactions
between stocks, compared to the market mode, by modeling stock price dynamics
with a two-factor model. Our results suggest that the emergence of an internal
structure comprising multiple groups of strongly coupled components is a

SWKB Quantization Rules for Bound States in Quantum Wells
In a recent paper by Gomes and Adhikari (J.Phys B30 5987(1997)) a matrix
formulation of the Bohr-Sommerfield quantization rule has been applied to the
study of bound states in one dimension quantum wells. Here we study these
potentials in the frame work of supersymmetric WKB (SWKB) quantization
approximation and find that SWKB quantization rule is superior to the modified
Bohr-Sommerfield or WKB rules as it exactly reproduces the eigenenergies.Comment: 8 page
In-situ integrated processing and characterization of thin films of high temperature superconductors, dielectrics and semiconductors by MOCVD
In this strategy of depositing the basic building blocks of superconductors, semiconductors, and dielectric having common elements, researchers deposited superconducting films of Y-Ba-Cu-O, semiconductor films of Cu2O, and dielectric films of BaF2 and Y2O3 by metal oxide chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). By switching source materials entering the chamber, and by using direct writting capability, complex device structures like three-terminal hybrid semiconductors/superconductors transistors can be fabricated. The Y-Ba-Cu-O superconducting thin films on BaF2/YSZ substrates show a T(sub c) of 80 K and are textured with most of the grains having their c-axis or a-axis perpendicular to the substrate. Electrical characteristics as well as structural characteristics of superconductors and related materials obtained by x-ray defraction, electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray analysis are discussed
