Brane-worlds and theta-vacua

Reductions from odd to even dimensionalities ($5\to 4$ or $3\to 2$), for which the effective low-energy theory contains chiral fermions, present us with a mismatch between ultraviolet and infrared anomalies. This applies to both local (gauge) and global currents; here we consider the latter case. We show that the mismatch can be explained by taking into account a change in the spectral asymmetry of the massive modes--an odd-dimensional analog of the phenomenon described by the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theorem in even dimensionalities. The result has phenomenological implications: we present a scenario in which a QCD-like $\theta$-angle relaxes to zero on a certain (possibly, cosmological) timescale, despite the absence of any light axion-like particle.Comment: 44 pages, 4 figure

Basic Education in Cambodia: The Impact of UNESCO onPolicies in the 1990s

Efforts to enhance opportunities for Basic Education have been growing within many developing nations after the1990 World Conference on Education For All (WCEFA) in Jomtien, Thailand. In the face of political turmoil, financial constraint and social insecurity, Cambodia with the encouragement and assistance of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), took measures to increase educational opportunities for all her citizens through Basic Education strategic plans and pledged to eradicate illiteracy by the year 2000. This article examines the  joint efforts during the 1990s of this organization as a key assistance and support UN agency for educational policy and strategy formulations, and the Cambodian government as a national agency for educational initiatives and implementation. UNESCO’s inputs for policy implementation are also detailed to evaluate the overall impact of the organization during the last decade. Analyses are based primarily on interviews with some key government policymakers, fieldwork observation and interviews with school-aged children, several speeches of top government officials, and existing related official education statistics and indicators in Cambodia

Glycosylation pattern of brush border-associated glycoproteins in enterocyte-like cells: involvement of complex-type N-glycans in apical trafficking

We have previously reported that galectin-4, a tandem repeat-type galectin, regulates the raft-dependent delivery of glycoproteins to the apical brush border membrane of enterocyte-like HT-29 cells. N-Acetyllactosamine-containing glycans, known as galectin ligands, were found enriched in detergent-resistant membranes. Here, we analyzed the potential contribution of N-and/ or O-glycans in this mechanism. Structural studies were carried out on the brush border membrane-enriched fraction using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and nano-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS. The pattern of N-glycans was very heterogeneous, with the presence of high mannose- and hybrid-type glycans as well as a multitude of complex-type glycans. In contrast, the pattern of O-glycans was very simple with the presence of two major core type 1 O-glycans, sialylated and bisialylated T-antigen structures {[}Neu5Ac alpha 2-3Gal beta 1-3GalNAc-ol and Neu5Ac alpha 2-3Gal beta 1 -3(Neu5Ac alpha 2-6)GalNAc-ol]. Thus, N-glycans rather than O-glycans contain the N-acetyllactosamine recognition signals for the lipid raft-based galectin-4-dependent apical delivery. In the presence of 1-deoxymannojirimycin, a drug which inhibits the generation of hybrid-type or complex type N-glycans, the extensively O-glycosylated mucin-like MUC1 glycoprotein was not delivered to the apical brush border but accumulated inside the cells. Altogether, our data demonstrate the crucial role of complex N-glycans in the galectin-4-dependent delivery of glycoproteins to the apical brush border membrane of enterocytic HT-29 cells

Increasing the Reliability of Adaptive Quadrature Using Explicit Interpolants

We present two new adaptive quadrature routines. Both routines differ from previously published algorithms in many aspects, most significantly in how they represent the integrand, how they treat non-numerical values of the integrand, how they deal with improper divergent integrals and how they estimate the integration error. The main focus of these improvements is to increase the reliability of the algorithms without significantly impacting their efficiency. Both algorithms are implemented in Matlab and tested using both the "families" suggested by Lyness and Kaganove and the battery test used by Gander and Gautschi and Kahaner. They are shown to be more reliable, albeit in some cases less efficient, than other commonly-used adaptive integrators.Comment: 32 pages, submitted to ACM Transactions on Mathematical Softwar
