    Manipulation and Generation of Supercurrent in Out-of-Equilibrium Josephson Tunnel Nanojunctions

    We demonstrate experimentally manipulation of supercurrent in Al-AlO_x-Ti Josephson tunnel junctions by injecting quasiparticles in a Ti island from two additional tunnel-coupled Al superconducting reservoirs. Both supercurrent enhancement and quenching with respect to equilibrium are achieved. We demonstrate cooling of the Ti line by quasiparticle injection from the normal state deep into the superconducting phase. A model based on heat transport and non-monotonic current-voltage characteristic of a Josephson junction satisfactorily accounts for our findings.Comment: 4 pages, 4 colour figures, published versio

    Evidence of Josephson-coupled superconducting regions at the interfaces of Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite

    Transport properties of a few hundreds of nanometers thick (in the graphene plane direction) lamellae of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) have been investigated. Current-Voltage characteristics as well as the temperature dependence of the voltage at different fixed input currents provide evidence for Josephson-coupled superconducting regions embedded in the internal two-dimensional interfaces, reaching zero resistance at low enough temperatures. The overall behavior indicates the existence of superconducting regions with critical temperatures above 100 K at the internal interfaces of oriented pyrolytic graphite.Comment: 6 Figures, 5 page

    Comparison of machine learning methods for analysis of ulcerative colitis proteomic data

    Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal system, affecting adults and children. Its cause is unknown, and the knowledge of reliable biomarkers is limited, especially for children. That makes the search for new biomarkers and pushing forth the analysis of the available data particularly challenging. We investigate proteomic data from children patients as a promising source, and tackle the problem implementing the recently developed parenclitic network approach to machine learning algorithms that solve classification task for proteomic data from healthy and diseased. We expect our approach to be applicable to other gastrointestinal diseases

    Quantum charge diffusion in underdamped Josephson junctions and superconducting nanowires

    The effect of quantum fluctuations on the current-voltage characteristics of Josephson junctions and superconducting nanowires is studied in the underdamped limit. Quantum fluctuations induce transitions between a Coulomb--blockade and a supercurrent branch, and can significantly modify the shape of current-voltage characteristics in the case of a highly resistive environment.     On Effect of Equilibrium Fluctuations on Superfluid Density in Layered Superconductors

    We calculate suppression of inter- and intralayer superconducting currents due to equilibrium phase fluctuations and find that, in contrast to a recent prediction, the effect of thermal fluctuations cannot account for linear temperature dependence of the superfluid density in high-Tc superconductors at low temperatures. Quantum fluctuations are found to dominate over thermal fluctuations at low temperatures due to hardening of their spectrum caused by the Josephson plasma resonance. Near Tc sizeable thermal fluctuations are found to suppress the critical current in the stack direction stronger, than in the direction along the layers. Fluctuations of quasiparticle branch imbalance make the spectral density of voltage fluctuations at small frequencies non zero, in contrast to what may be expected from a naive interpretation of Nyquist formula.Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX, RevTeX, Submitted to PR

    Theory of Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling in High-T_c c-Axis Josephson Junctions

    We study macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in c-axis twist Josephson junctions made of high-T_c superconductors in order to clarify the influence of the anisotropic order parameter symmetry (OPS) on MQT. The dependence of the MQT rate on the twist angle γ\gamma about the c-axis is calculated by using the functional integral and the bounce method. Due to the d-wave OPS, the γ\gamma dependence of standard deviation of the switching current distribution and the crossover temperature from thermal activation to MQT are found to be given by cos2γ\cos2\gamma and cos2γ\sqrt{\cos2\gamma}, respectively. We also show that a dissipative effect resulting from the nodal quasiparticle excitation on MQT is negligibly small, which is consistent with recent MQT experiments using Bi2{}_2Sr2{}_2CaCu2{}_2O8+δ{}_{8 + \delta} intrinsic junctions. These results indicate that MQT in c-axis twist junctions becomes a useful experimental tool for testing the OPS of high-T_c materials at low temperature, and suggest high potential of such junctions for qubit applications.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

    Despite the advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, the cardiac mortality takes a leading position among the causes of general mortality. It was also noted that depressive disorders are widespread among the cardiovascular patients. They induce the impairment of cardiac prognosis both in patients with cardiovascular disease and in patients without cardiac disease. The article outlines the basic pathophysiological mechanisms of interaction between depressive symptoms and cardiovascular disease. In addition, the article focuses on the diagnosis of depressive symptoms as a factor determining cardiac prognosis
