    Synthesis of superconducting pyrochlore RbOs2O6

    RbOs2O6, the third superconducting pyrochlore oxide (known so far), has been synthesized by encapsulation and by high pressure techniques. Suitable post chemical treatment of the as-prepared sample allowed us to eliminate the impurity phases. Bulk superconductivity with Tc=6.4 K was observed in magnetisation and specific heat measurements. The transition temperature of RbOs2O6 was found to be the same for both preparation methods.     Role of electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction effect in the optical conductivity of VO2

    We have investigated the charge dynamics of VO2 by optical reflectivity measurements. Optical conductivity clearly shows a metal-insulator transition. In the metallic phase, a broad Drude-like structure is observed. On the other hand, in the insulating phase, a broad peak structure around 1.3 eV is observed. It is found that this broad structure observed in the insulating phase shows a temperature dependence. We attribute this to the electron-phonon interaction as in the photoemission spectra.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Thermal Conductivity of the Pyrochlore Superconductor KOs2O6: Strong Electron Correlations and Fully Gapped Superconductivity

    To elucidate the nature of the superconducting ground state of the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore KOs2O6 (Tc=9.6K), the thermal conductivity was measured down to low temperatures (~Tc/100). We found that the quasiparticle mean free path is strikingly enhanced below a transition at Tp=7.5K, indicating enormous electron inelastic scattering in the normal state. In a magnetic field the conduction at T ->0K is nearly constant up to ~0.4Hc2, in contrast with the rapid growth expected for superconductors with an anisotropic gap. This unambiguously indicates a fully gapped superconductivity, in contrast to the previous studies. These results highlight that KOs2O6 is unique among superconductors with strong electron correlations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

    Forming method and characteristics of coiled spring in small coil diameter and with high rectangular ratio in winding wire cross section

    This paper presents a new forming method of a coiled spring which is used as a forceps manipulator of a surgical robot. Joint parts of forceps manipulator are required to be “easy to bend and strong to twist”. This demand is fulfilled by using coiled springs with high rectangular ratio in winding wire cross section. However, the coiled springs are conventionally expensive as they are fabricated by machining. This study proposed a new and inexpensive forming method for fabrication of the coiled spring with high rectangular ratio in the wire cross section. In this method, the coiled spring with circular shape in the winding wire cross section is compressed in the coil axial direction by upsetting, and then the rectangle ratio of the wire becomes high. The coiled spring with a high rectangular ratio of 3 was obtained by the proposed method. In addition, a numerical analysis and an experiment were conducted for evaluation of the formed coiled springs in terms of tensile, torsional, and bending characteristics. The formed coiled springs were easy to bend and strong to twist from results. Moreover, the elastic limit of the formed coiled springs improved due to work hardening by upsetting

    Immunohistochemical expression of heat shock proteins in the mouse periodontal tissues due to orthodontic mechanical stress

    The histopathology of periodontal ligament of the mouse subjected to mechanical stress was studied. Immunohistochemical expressions of HSP27 and pHSP27 were examined. Experimental animals using the maxillary molars of ddY mouse by Waldo method were used in the study. A separator was inserted to induce mechanical stress. After 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 9 hours and 24 hours, the regional tissues were extracted, fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and 0.05 M phosphate-buffered fixative solution. Paraffin sections were made for immunohistochemistry using HSP27 and p-HSP27. In the control group, the periodontal ligament fibroblasts expressed low HSP27 and p-HSP27. However, in the experimental group, periodontal ligament fibroblasts expressed HSP27 10 minutes after mechanical load application in the tension side. The strongest expression was detected 9 hours after inducing mechanical load. p-HSP27 was also expressed in a time-dependent manner though weaker than HSP27. The findings suggest that HSP27 and p-HSP27 were expressed for the maintenance of homeostasis of periodontal ligament by the activation of periodontal ligament fibroblasts on the tension side. It also suggests that these proteins act as molecular chaperones for osteoblast activation and maintenance of homeostasis
