    Lightness Dependencies and the Effect of Texture on Suprathreshold Lightness Tolerances

    A psychophysical experiment was performed to determine the effects of lightness dependency on suprathreshold lightness tolerances. Using a pass/fail method of constant stimuli, lightness tolerance thresholds were measured using achromatic stimuli centered at CIELAB L* = 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 90 using 44 observers. In addition to measuring tolerance thresholds for uniform samples, lightness tolerances were measured using stimuli with a simulated texture of thread wound on a card. A texture intermediate between the wound thread and the uniform stimuli was also used. A computer-controlled CRT was used to perform the experiments. Lightness tolerances were found to increase with increasing lightness of the test stimuli. For the uniform stimuli this effect was only evident at the higher lightnesses. For the textured stimuli, this trend was more evident throughout the whole lightness range. Texture had an effect of increasing the tolerance thresholds by a factor of almost 2 as compared to the uniform stimuli. The intermediate texture had tolerance thresholds that were between those of the uniform and full-textured stimuli. Transforming the results into a plot of threshold vs. intensity produced results that were more uniform across the three conditions. This may indicate that CIELAB is not the best space in which to model these effects

    The HERA-B experiment utilizes an internal wire target in the halo of the stored proton beam in order to study CP violation. As operational experience shows, interaction rates tend to be extremely sensitive to tiny orbit jitter amplitudes. In order to stabilize these interaction rates, various methods have been studied to increase diffusion in the transverse proton beam tails without affecting the luminosity at the electron-proton collider experiments ZEUS and H1.     We analyze the analytic continuation of the formally divergent one-loop amplitude for scattering of the graviton multiplet in the Type II Superstring. In particular we obtain explicit double and single dispersion relations, formulas for all the successive branch cuts extending out to plus infinity, as well as for the decay rate of a massive string state of arbitrary mass 2N into two string states of lower mass. We compare our results with the box diagram in a superposition of Ď•3\phi^3-like field theories.     Abnormalities of Penile Curvature: Chordee and Penile Torsion

    Congenital chordee and penile torsion are commonly observed in the presence of hypospadias, but can also be seen in boys with the meatus in its orthotopic position. Varying degrees of penile curvature are observed in 4–10% of males in the absence of hypospadias. Penile torsion can be observed at birth or in older boys who were circumcised at birth. Surgical management of congenital curvature without hypospadias can present a challenge to the pediatric urologist. The most widely used surgical techniques include penile degloving and dorsal plication. This paper will review the current theories for the etiology of penile curvature, discuss the spectrum of severity of congenital chordee and penile torsion, and present varying surgical techniques for the correction of penile curvature in the absence of hypospadias

    On the Evolution of Ion Bunch Profile in the Presence of Longitudinal Coherent Electron Cooling

    In the presence of longitudinal coherent electron cooling, the evolution of the line-density profile of a circulating ion bunch can be described by the 1-D Fokker-Planck equation. We show that, in the absence of diffusion, the 1-D equation can be solved analytically for certain dependence of cooling force on the synchrotron amplitude. For more general cases with arbitrary diffusion, we solved the 1-D Fokker-Planck equation numerically and the numerical solutions have been compared with results from macro-particle tracking

    A hybrid version the deformed nuclear potential is suggested, which combines a spherical Woods Saxon potential with a deformed Nilsson potential. It removes the problems of the conventional Nilsson potential in the mass 130 region.
