System design of the Pioneer Venus spacecraft. Volume 13: Preliminary development plans
This Pioneer Venus Study final report describes the following baseline configurations: (1) Thor/Delta Spacecraft Baseline is the baseline presented at the midterm review on 26 February 1973, (2) Atlas/Centaur Spacecraft Baseline is the baseline resulting from studies conducted since the midterm, but prior to receipt of the NASA execution phase RFP, and subsequent to decisions to launch both the multiprobe and orbiter missions in 1978 and use the Atlas/Centaur launch vehicle, and (3) Atlas/Centaur Spacecraft Midterm Baseline is the baseline presented at the 26 February 1973 review and is only used in the launch vehicle utilization trade study
Vibration characteristics of Z-ring-stiffened 60 deg conical shell models of a planetary entry spacecraft
An experimental investigation of the vibration characteristics of a 60 deg conical shell model of a planetary entry vehicle is described and the results presented. Model configurations include the shell with or without one or two Z-ring stiffeners and with or without a simulated payload. Tests were conducted with the model clamped at the small diameter and with the model suspended at the simulated payload. Additionally, calculated results obtained from application of several analytical procedures reported in the literature are presented together with comparisons between experimental and calculated frequencies and meridional mode shapes. Generally, very good frequency agreement between experimental and calculated results was obtained for all model configurations. For small values of circumferential mode number, however, the frequency agreement decreased as the number of ring stiffeners increased. Overall agreement between experimental and calculated mode shapes was generally good. The calculated modes usually showed much larger curvatures in the vicinity of the rings than were observed in the experimentally measured mode shapes. Dual resonances associated with modal preference were noted for the shell without Z-ring stiffeners, whereas the addition of stiffeners produced resonances for which the model responded in two or more modes over different sections of the shell length
Phase retrieval from power spectra of masked signals
In diffraction imaging, one is tasked with reconstructing a signal from its
power spectrum. To resolve the ambiguity in this inverse problem, one might
invoke prior knowledge about the signal, but phase retrieval algorithms in this
vein have found limited success. One alternative is to create redundancy in the
measurement process by illuminating the signal multiple times, distorting the
signal each time with a different mask. Despite several recent advances in
phase retrieval, the community has yet to construct an ensemble of masks which
uniquely determines all signals and admits an efficient reconstruction
algorithm. In this paper, we leverage the recently proposed polarization method
to construct such an ensemble. We also present numerical simulations to
illustrate the stability of the polarization method in this setting. In
comparison to a state-of-the-art phase retrieval algorithm known as PhaseLift,
we find that polarization is much faster with comparable stability.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure

The fight for better education in the South after the Civil War was a long, arduous process. Illiteracy was at extreme levels as Reconstruction was under way. Many people in the South saw this and tried to remedy the problem as best they could. Veterans are becoming increasingly scarce as age takes them away. However, thanks to interviews like this, we can preserve their legacy
Phase retrieval with polarization
In many areas of imaging science, it is difficult to measure the phase of
linear measurements. As such, one often wishes to reconstruct a signal from
intensity measurements, that is, perform phase retrieval. In this paper, we
provide a novel measurement design which is inspired by interferometry and
exploits certain properties of expander graphs. We also give an efficient phase
retrieval procedure, and use recent results in spectral graph theory to produce
a stable performance guarantee which rivals the guarantee for PhaseLift in
[Candes et al. 2011]. We use numerical simulations to illustrate the
performance of our phase retrieval procedure, and we compare reconstruction
error and runtime with a common alternating-projections-type procedure
