The influence of cerium addition on the solidification sequence and microstructure constituents of the Al-Si alloys with 12,6 mass % Si was examined. The solidification was analyzed by a simple thermal analysis. The microstructures were examined with conventional light and scanning electron microscopy. Ternary AlSiCe phase was formed in the Al-Si alloys with added cerium during the solidification process. AlSiCe and β-AlFeSi phases solidified together in the region that solidified the last. Cerium addition influenced on the morphology of the α-AlFeSi phase solidification.Ispitan je utjecaj dodatka cera na tijek skrućivanja i oblikovanje mikrostrukture u Al-Si slitini s 12,6 mas. % Si.

The use of deep friction massage with olive oil as a means of prevention and treatment of sports injuries in ancient times

The aim of this research was to analyse the use of olive oil as a means of prevention and treatment of sports injuries in the ancient world. The method adopted was based on a thorough study of Greek and world literature. Writings of major ancient philosophers and physicians such as Hippocrates, Aristotle, Philostratus, and Lucian have been analysed in depth. According to the results, the use of massage, together with olive oil rub, helped to reduce muscle fatigue, to remove lactic acid, and to prevent the occurrence of sports injuries through flexibility provided to the skin of athletes. The therapeutic use of oil in the ancient world was fully recognized; and as a result Athenian athlothetes (sponsors of sporting events) provided free oil to all sport facilities where athletes could make free use of it [1]

Phylogenetic Relationships of Monocots Based on the Highly Informative Plastid Gene ndhF

We used ndhF sequence variation to reconstruct relationships across 282 taxa representing 78 monocot families and all 12 orders. The resulting tree is highly resolved and places commelinids sister to Asparagales, with both sister to Liliales—Pandanales in the strict consensus; Pandanales are sister to Dioscoreales in the bootstrap majority-rule tree, just above Petrosaviales. Acorales are sister to all other monocots, with Alismatales sister to all but Acorales. Relationships among the four major clades of commelinids remain unresolved. Relationships within orders are consistent with those based on rbcL, alone or in combination with atpB and 18S nrDNA, and generally better supported: ndhF contributes more than twice as many informative characters as rbcL, and nearly as many as rbcL, atpB, and 18S nrDNA combined. Based on functional arguments, we hypothesized that net venation and fleshy fruits should both evolve—and thus undergo concerted convergence—in shaded habitats, and revert to parallel venation and dry, passively dispersed fruits in open, sunny habitats. Our data show that net venation arose at least 26 times and disappeared 9 times, whereas fleshy fruits arose 22 times and disappeared 11 times. Both traits arose together at least 15 times and disappeared together 5 times. They thus show a highly significant pattern of concerted convergence (P \u3c 10-9) and are each even more strongly associated with shaded habitats (P \u3c 10-10 to 10-23); net venation is also associated, as predicted, with broad-leaved aquatic plants. Exceptions to this pattern illustrate the importance of other selective constraints and phylogenetic inertia

The role of Zr and T6 heat treatment on microstructure evolution and hardness of AlSi9Cu3(Fe) diecasting alloy

The microstructure features and hardness of AlSi9Cu3(Fe) die casting alloy was investigated in the presence of Zr addition. The cast alloys were undergone the solutionizing treatment 2 h at 500°C followed by artificial aging at 180°C for 5 h. Optical microscopy and electron micro-analyzer were used to study the formation of different intermetallic phases. The hardness was tested for all samples at 25°C. The results revealed that the intermetallic phase, based on (Al,Si)(Zr,Ti), forms when Zr is added in the investigated alloy, while the T6 heat treatment does not influence on the formation of Zr-bearing phase. Results also indicate that the hardness slightly increases in the AlSi9Cu3 alloy in as-cast state when Zr is added, while after T6 heat treatment increases by 50% in the alloy without Zr and by 61% in the alloy with Zr addition
