GRB011211: An alternative interpretation of the optical and X-ray spectra in terms of blueshifts

The redshifts of the gamma ray burst (GRB) GRB 011211 has been determined as 2.14 from several absorption lines seen in the spectrum of its optical afterglow. The spectrum of its X-ray afterglow exhibited several emission lines, and their identification led to a mean redshift 1.862. A supernova model has been proposed based on the redshift of the GRB as 2.141. It is shown here that the redshift interpretation cannot explain the observed spectra, as some serious inconsistencies exist in the process of redshift determinations in spectra of both optical and X-ray afterglows. In view of that, an alternative interpretation of the spectra is presented in terms of blueshifts. Ejection mechanism is proposed as a possible scenario to explain the blueshifted spectrum.Comment: 26 pages, one table; in Canadian Journal of Physics, June 200

Nuclear incompressibility using the density dependent M3Y effective interaction

A density dependent M3Y effective nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction which was based on the G-matrix elements of the Reid-Elliott NN potential has been used to determine the incompressibity of infinite nuclear matter. The nuclear interaction potential obtained by folding in the density distribution functions of two interacting nuclei with this density dependent M3Y effective interaction had been shown earlier to provide excellent descriptions for medium and high energy α\alpha and heavy ion elastic scatterings as well as α\alpha and heavy cluster radioactivities. The density dependent parameters have been chosen to reproduce the saturation energy per nucleon and the saturation density of spin and isospin symmetric cold infinite nuclear matter. The result of such calculations for nuclear incompressibility using the density dependent M3Y effective interaction based on the G-matrix elements of Reid-Elliott NN potential predicts a value of about 300 MeV for nuclear incompressibility.Comment: 4 Page

Comparison of High-degree Solar Acoustic Frequencies and Asymmetry between Velocity and Intensity Data

    Get PDF
Using the local helioseismic technique of ring diagram we analyze the frequencies of high--degree f- and p-modes derived from both velocity and continuum intensity data observed by MDI. Fitting the spectra with asymmetric peak profiles, we find that the asymmetry associated with velocity line profiles is negative for all frequency ranges agreeing with previous observations while the asymmetry of the intensity profiles shows a complex and frequency dependent behavior. We also observe systematic frequency differences between intensity and velocity spectra at the high end of the frequency range, mostly above 4 mHz. We infer that this difference arises from the fitting of the intensity rather than the velocity spectra. We also show that the frequency differences between intensity and velocity do not vary significantly from the disk center to the limb when the spectra are fitted with the asymmetric profile and conclude that only a part of the background is correlated with the intensity oscillations.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa

Consistent 3D Quantum Gravity on Lens Spaces

We study non-perturbative quantization of 3d gravity with positive cosmological constant (de Sitter space being the prototype vacuum solution, whose Euclideanization of course gives the three sphere) on the background topology of lens space, which is a three spheres modulo a discrete group. Instead of the strategy followed by a recent work \cite{Castro:2011xb}, which compares results in the second and first order formulations of gravity, we concentrate on the later solely. We note, as a striking feature, that the quantization, that relies heavily on the axiomatics of topological quantum field theory (TQFT) can only be consistently carried by augmenting the conventional theory by an additional topological term coupled through a dimensionless parameter. More importantly the introduction of this additional parameter renders the theory finite.Comment: New section and references added. Accepted in Phys. Rev. D for publicatio
