Aerosol light absorption in the North Atlantic: trends and seasonal characteristics during the period 1989 to 2003
Aerosol light attenuation on quartz fibre filters has been measured since February 1989 at the Mace Head Atmospheric Research station near Carna, Co. Galway, Ireland, using an Aethalometer. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> The frequency of occurrence of the hourly averaged aerosol absorption data is found to be bimodally distributed. The two modes result from clean marine air and anthropogenically polluted continental air both being advected to the station dependent on the prevailing wind direction. The hourly averages of the marine portion of the aerosol light absorption are found to follow closely a lognormal distribution with a geometric mean of 0.310 Mm-1. The hourly averages of continental sector aerosol absorption are neither normally nor lognormally distributed and have an arithmetic mean of 6.36 Mm-1, indicating the presence of anthropogenic sources for BC east of the Mace Head station. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> The time series of the monthly averaged attenuation coefficient σatt of both marine and continental sector aerosol shows an increase from 1989 to 1997 and a levelling off thereafter. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> The monthly maximum of marine sector σatt is found in May. Trend and seasonal characteristics of the clean marine aerosol attenuation coefficients observed at Mace Head appear to be driven by meteorological factors, as indicated by rainfall data and by trends in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) indices. The observed increasing trends of the continental sector σatt from 1989 up to 1997 are possibly related to changes in BC emissions over Ireland, calculated from UNSTAT (2002) fuel consumption data
Coherent states for polynomial su(1,1) algebra and a conditionally solvable system
In a previous paper [{\it J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} {\bf 40} (2007) 11105],
we constructed a class of coherent states for a polynomially deformed
algebra. In this paper, we first prepare the discrete representations of the
nonlinearly deformed algebra. Then we extend the previous procedure
to construct a discrete class of coherent states for a polynomial su(1,1)
algebra which contains the Barut-Girardello set and the Perelomov set of the
SU(1,1) coherent states as special cases. We also construct coherent states for
the cubic algebra related to the conditionally solvable radial oscillator
problem.Comment: 2 figure
Quantum fluctuations of the electroweak sphaleron: Erratum and Addendum
We correct an error in our treatment of the tadpole contribution to the
fluctuation determinant of the sphaleron, and also a minor mistake in a
previous estimate. Thereby the overall agreement between the two existing exact
computations and their consistency with the estimate is improved considerably.Comment: 4 pages, Dortmund preprint DO-TH-93/19E
Klein tunneling in carbon nanostructures: a free particle dynamics in disguise
The absence of backscattering in metallic nanotubes as well as perfect Klein
tunneling in potential barriers in graphene are the prominent electronic
characteristics of carbon nanostructures. We show that the phenomena can be
explained by a peculiar supersymmetry generated by a first order Hamiltonian
and zero order supercharge operators. Like the supersymmetry associated with
second order reflectionless finite-gap systems, it relates here the low-energy
behavior of the charge carriers with the free particle dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 1 fig., typos correcte

More on coupling coefficients for the most degenerate representations of SO(n)
We present explicit closed-form expressions for the general group-theoretical
factor appearing in the alpha-topology of a high-temperature expansion of
SO(n)-symmetric lattice models. This object, which is closely related to
6j-symbols for the most degenerate representation of SO(n), is discussed in
detail.Comment: 9 pages including 1 table, uses IOP macros Update of Introduction and

Supersymmetric Extension of the Quantum Spherical Model
In this work, we present a supersymmetric extension of the quantum spherical
model, both in components and also in the superspace formalisms. We find the
solution for short/long range interactions through the imaginary time formalism
path integral approach. The existence of critical points (classical and
quantum) is analyzed and the corresponding critical dimensions are determined.Comment: 21 pages, fixed notation to match published versio
Longitudinal predictors of health-related quality of life in isolated dystonia
OBJECTIVE: To determine longitudinal predictors of health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in an international multicenter cohort of patients with isolated dystonia.
METHODS: Out of 603 dystonia patients prospectively enrolled in the Natural History Dystonia Coalition study, 155 were assessed three times within 2 years for HR-QoL, symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and social anxiety disorder (SAD), as well as dystonia severity and dystonic tremor. In addition, the impact of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injections on HR-QoL was evaluated after 1 year.
RESULTS: Depressive symptoms at baseline predicted lower HR-QoL on all subscales after 2 years (all p ≤ 0.001). Higher GAD scores at baseline predicted lower HR-QoL related to general health, pain and emotional well-being, whereas higher SAD scores predicted higher pain-related QoL after 2 years (all p ≤ 0.006). Dystonia severity at baseline predicted social functioning (p = 0.002). Neither dystonic tremor, age, or sex predicted HR-QoL at 2 years. Two latent categories were revealed across the three-time points: Category 1 with higher total HR-QoL scores (mean HR-QoL = 74.4% ± 16.1), susceptible to symptoms of depression and SAD, and Category 2 with lower total HR-QoL scores (mean HR-QoL = 45.5% ± 17.6), susceptible to symptoms of GAD. HR-QoL improved over the course of 1 year irrespective of the use of BoNT.
CONCLUSION: The longitudinal impact of psychiatric symptoms on HR-QoL emphasizes the importance of incorporating mental health treatment, in particular also the therapy of anxiety disorders, into treatment regimens for dystonia
