    Data assimilation sensitivity experiments in the East Auckland Current system using 4D-Var

    This study analyses data assimilative numerical simulations in an eddy-dominated western boundary current: the East Auckland Current (EAuC). The goal is to assess the impact of assimilating surface and subsurface data into a model of the EAuC via running observing system experiments (OSEs). We used the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) in conjunction with the 4-dimensional variational (4D-Var) data assimilation scheme to incorporate sea surface height (SSH) and temperature (SST), as well as subsurface temperature, salinity and velocity from three moorings located at the upper, mid and lower continental slope using a 7 d assimilation window. Assimilation of surface fields (SSH and SST) reduced SSH root mean square deviation (RMSD) by 25 % in relation to the non-assimilative (NoDA) run. The inclusion of velocity subsurface data further reduced SSH RMSD up- and downstream the moorings by 18 %–25 %. By improving the representation of the mesoscale eddy field, data assimilation increased complex correlation between modelled and observed velocity in all experiments by at least three times. However, the inclusion of temperature and salinity slightly decreased the velocity complex correlation. The assimilative experiments reduced the SST RMSD by 36 % in comparison to the NoDA run. The lack of subsurface temperature for assimilation led to larger RMSD (&gt;1 ∘C) around 100 m in relation to the NoDA run. Comparisons to independent Argo data also showed larger errors at 100 m in experiments that did not assimilate subsurface temperature data. Withholding subsurface temperature forces near-surface average negative temperature increments to the initial conditions that are corrected by increased net heat flux at the surface, but this had limited or no effect on water temperature at 100 m depth. Assimilation of mooring temperature generates mean positive increments to the initial conditions that reduces 100 m water temperature RMSD. In addition, negative heat flux and positive wind stress curl were generated near the moorings in experiments that assimilated subsurface temperature data. Positive wind stress curl generates convergence and downwelling that can correct interior temperature but might also be responsible for decreased velocity correlations. The few moored CTDs (eight) had little impact in correcting salinity in comparison to independent Argo data. However, using doubled decorrelation length scales of tracers and a 2 d assimilation window improved model salinity and temperature in comparison to Argo profiles throughout the domain. This assimilation configuration, however, led to large errors when subsurface temperature data were not assimilated due to incorrect increments to the subsurface. As all reanalyses show improved model-observation skill relative to HYCOM–NCODA (the model boundary conditions), these results highlight the benefit of numerical downscaling to a regional model of the EAuC.</p

    Processing Ordinality and Quantity: The Case of Developmental Dyscalculia

    In contrast to quantity processing, up to date, the nature of ordinality has received little attention from researchers despite the fact that both quantity and ordinality are embodied in numerical information. Here we ask if there are two separate core systems that lie at the foundations of numerical cognition: (1) the traditionally and well accepted numerical magnitude system but also (2) core system for representing ordinal information. We report two novel experiments of ordinal processing that explored the relation between ordinal and numerical information processing in typically developing adults and adults with developmental dyscalculia (DD). Participants made “ordered” or “non-ordered” judgments about 3 groups of dots (non-symbolic numerical stimuli; in Experiment 1) and 3 numbers (symbolic task: Experiment 2). In contrast to previous findings and arguments about quantity deficit in DD participants, when quantity and ordinality are dissociated (as in the current tasks), DD participants exhibited a normal ratio effect in the non-symbolic ordinal task. They did not show, however, the ordinality effect. Ordinality effect in DD appeared only when area and density were randomized, but only in the descending direction. In the symbolic task, the ordinality effect was modulated by ratio and direction in both groups. These findings suggest that there might be two separate cognitive representations of ordinal and quantity information and that linguistic knowledge may facilitate estimation of ordinal information

    Multiscale multiphysics data-informed modeling for three-dimensional ocean acoustic simulation and prediction

The definitive version was published in Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 146(3), (2019): 1996-2015, doi:10.1121/1.5126012.Three-dimensional (3D) underwater sound field computations have been used for a few decades to understand sound propagation effects above sloped seabeds and in areas with strong 3D temperature and salinity variations. For an approximate simulation of effects in nature, the necessary 3D sound-speed field can be made from snapshots of temperature and salinity from an operational data-driven regional ocean model. However, these models invariably have resolution constraints and physics approximations that exclude features that can have strong effects on acoustics, example features being strong submesoscale fronts and nonhydrostatic nonlinear internal waves (NNIWs). Here, work to predict NNIW fields to improve 3D acoustic forecasts using an NNIW model nested in a tide-inclusive data-assimilating regional model is reported. The work was initiated under the Integrated Ocean Dynamics and Acoustics project. The project investigated ocean dynamical processes that affect important details of sound-propagation, with a focus on those with strong intermittency (high kurtosis) that are challenging to predict deterministically. Strong internal tides and NNIW are two such phenomena, with the former being precursors to NNIW, often feeding energy to them.     Perceptions of immigrants: Modifying the attitudes of individuals higher in social dominance orientation

    Previous research has demonstrated that directly challenging people\u27s beliefs about immigrants may result in even stronger anti-immigration attitudes, especially among those higher in social dominance orientation (SDO). In addition, inducing the perception that immigrants are part of a larger ingroup does not modify immigration attitudes. In three studies, the article explores conditions that can reduce prejudice toward immigrants among those high in SDO. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrate that focusing attention on group identity maintains prejudice, whereas focusing attention on others reduces prejudice among those higher in SDO. Study 3 extends the findings of the first two studies by demonstrating that focusing attention on others in a way that induces perception of similarity with immigrants maintains negative attitudes toward immigrants, whereas focusing on individual values reduces prejudice among those higher in SDO. Implications for how prejudice could be reduced among those high in SDO through de-emphasis on group identity are discussed
